An alternative story can have alternative endings within itself. And there can be one true ending to that alternative story. Ran going back to Houjou is likely the true ending to that alternative story.

Depends on the situation.
Ally guard+ is usually better, due to the higher percentage for less int (with all guard 90% is the max you can get, and that's with 9 int), but if you have someone in the back row you want to protect for a bit (i.e. omachi for large lightning) then all guard can be useful.

wow.. honestly didn't even know you could get ran to love in her route always thought it was suppossed to be the ending where everything is rainbows and nothing bad happens in JAPAN.
No exploding girls, a wedding, rance fucks all the women, and the only one who is really screwed over is Isoroko with the no baby from rance with nonvirgin attached to her marriage resume.

Also finally got around getting the youkai people (never went after them before due to fighting xavier) and i got to say getting character completes for them sucks. No H-scenes and they constantly cry that masamune is dead even though i fired him and like to imagine he's just chilling in some shack back at ezo

Ally Guard only protects 2 other characters while All-Guard protects 5 others. Obviously that's fucking huge.

The problem with All-Guard is that it only gets half the % of Ally Guard, and since you're also protecting 3 additional people, your Guard% can get whittled down to nothing very quickly in some cases (for example, if you're fighting Iga).

Choose based on the situation. If the opponent has 3 melee units in their front row and few dangerous ranged attacks, an Ally Guard Ashigaru is better. If the opponent has few attackers but these attackers can attack the back row, or if the two other units in your front row can resist damage well (Yamagata with the Armor, for example), an All-Guard Ashigaru is probably a much better choice.
