There are stories of those who go out one day and simply never return.

Many of them are geeks and outcasts, those that society refused to accept. They usually have well above-average intelligence. But they're never suicidal, rarely have any enemies, nor are there any warning signs. And the bodies are never found: they just disappear. And it almost always happens to young adults in their 20s. Of course, these stories are vastly overshadowed by the more common cases of disappearances, so few notice the trend hidden among the noise. To their family and neighbors, they are just a single mysterious missing person.

One day, while walking home from the grocery story, a vast chasm opens under you. You panic, but to no avail--you fall into the depths. You have now become part of the statistic, Anonymous. One of the dozens of misfits who disappears each year without leaving a trace.

You wake up in a forest. Your legs ache. You grab for your cell phone, but your pockets are empty. You begin to panic, but after looking around, notice no immediate danger. In front of you lies a small leather-bound booklet. You open it and begin reading.

>> No.4845403

--------------
Introduction

Welcome back. We hope you have enjoyed your years in the outside world. Since you have no memories regarding your situation, this booklet will bring you up to speed. Some of the information here may be somewhat shocking and unexpected, but we think you can deal with it.

You already know quite a bit about the general concept of Youkai. The concept of "Touhou" in the outside world was created for this purpose: to greatly reduce the amount of reorientation required by children. Many years ago, Youkai of Gensokyo decided on a solution to the problem of the upbringing of Youkai. As you know, Youkai are naturally loners and do not generally have the disposition to raise children. This created a problem with regards to new Youkai: elder Youkai were not willing to train them, but they did not want to stand for uncivilized "feral" Youkai either.

Thus, a decision was made: new Youkai would be put under a vastly powerful restriction spell, eliminating their abilities. They would then be given human form and placed in orphanages across the outside world, to be raised by human families. Of course, as babies, it would be expected that they had no memory. With this they would learn language, literature, etiquette, history, mathematics, science, and so forth. Of course, two decades of learning is laughably short by Youkai standards, but with such a starting point, they would be able to learn the rest on their own.

You are a Youkai. This is Gensokyo.

>> No.4845408

The rest of this book is filled with basic reference information on Gensokyo and Youkai in general. Additionally, there is a short segment on you yourself, with information on your basic abilities, as was measured before you were dispatched to the outside world. Note that these are not restrictions and may be improved, given time, practice, and magic. Finally, it is strongly recommended that you read the Gensokyo Survival Guide included, which goes over the core Dos and Donts of Gensokyo life. Of course, it isn't implied that your survival is actually in danger: Gensokyo is by and large a friendly locale, especially for Youkai.
--------------

Somewhat surprised, you lay back and let your brain process what you just read. After a few minutes of contemplation, you read through the rest of the book.

In the section on yourself, one particular subsection seems particularly notable:
--------------
Once your restriction seal is removed, you will have the ability to choose your form. This is not a permanent decision and may be revisited later, so do not worry too much about your initial decision. However, do keep in mind that most Youkai will recognize you by your form, so repeated form-changing is considered impolite in Gensokyo society.

>> No.4845411

As you may have noticed in the previous sections, most Youkai take female forms. This has nothing to do with gender; most Youkai (with the exception of human-derived Youkai such as Magicians) do not have a "gender" in the human sense. The preference for female forms is largely a cultural one: most Youkai believe that female attire is significantly more elegant than male attire. To put it simply, today's Youkai are female because they wear frilly dresses, not vice versa. This has not always been true throughout Youkai history.

Choosing your form also involves choosing your attire, which you will be able to summon as part of the form-choosing process. Unlike changing forms, changes in attire are not particularly frowned upon in Gensokyo society. However, it is not the same as in the outside world, where humans are expected to wear a new outfit each day.
--------------

Another section covered the problem of languages:
--------------
As you know, Gensokyo's native language is Japanese. However, most Youkai are not natively Japanese. Accordingly, to avoid problems of monoculture, new Youkai like you are dispatched to all corners of the outside world. As you in particular are an English speaker, this book is of course written in English. As you might imagine, this language disparity can create some problems for new Youkai in Gensokyo. While your Youkai abilities should make learning other languages much easier than your human experience has led you to believe, it is still not a trivial task.

Accordingly, a translation spell has been cast on you. This will last for a few years and will, with concentration, mentally translate Japanese to English for you, both written and spoken. It will also allow you to speak Japanese with reasonable proficiency. However, given the insurmountable differences between the two languages, even this spell is not perfect. You will be expected to make learning the language one of your foremost priorities. Resources are available in the Scarlet Devil Mansion library. Furthermore, we strongly encourage new Youkai to take advantage of the Human Village's schools to provide for experience in spoken language.
--------------

An hour or so later, you have finished. You close the book, but the instant the pages touch, a loud crackling sound bursts forth and a bright red magic circle appears above the book. A deep voice speaks, though you're pretty sure it's not actual sound, but rather inside your head.

"Now that you are ready, the restriction spell can be released. Put your hand in the center of this magic circle and you will be free."

With a deep breath, you reach forward and place your hand on the magic circle. With a clap of thunder, the magic circle explodes and the book is sent flying. Dozens of unfamiliar contradictory sensations flood your body. You recoil backwards and your butt slams straight into the ground. You try to breathe; you're completely winded.

>> No.4845427

Wait, no, you're not winded, you just expected to be. Your butt does not in fact hurt, you can breathe just fine, and your legs no longer ache. On a whim, you push hard against the ground and jump. You go much higher than expected and grab a tree branch to avoid falling down. Then, catching your senses, you figure that you probably won't be hurt by the fall and let go (you're right).

You then remember that power that all Youkai in Gensokyo--for that matter, all people--are supposed to have: flight. You recall the relevant passage in the book--unusually, it jumps to the front of your mind instantly. You concentrate as the text described, close your eyes, and imagine floating above the ground. *Awesome*, you think. You begin to relax as WHAM--you land back on the ground. It seems you have to keep at least a modicum of concentration to stay in the air. You'll probably get the hang of this eventually.

Your mind wanders back to the problem of choosing your form. "I get to be the little girl..." you mutter. Indeed you do, if you want. Your imagination runs wild as you consider all the possibilities.

Then you... <your story starts here>

Because I have an almost God Tier imagination, this is awesome.

So I don't have to kill myself to get to Gensokyo?
Awesome.

I remember these threads back when /jp/ started. I think in our one save, we ended up in the Scarlet Mansion. We cooked eggs for everyone, since that was our only skill. Well, that and dying in the lake incessantly.

That was great, except anon was an idiot and couldn't agree on anything.
A pity it ended. We'd die alone with equal points in every girl in Gensokyo, but at least we'd die in an epic battle of man vs lake.

>>4845640

Well one solution is to just let the gamemaster (writefag) pick responses that make sense and ignore the idiots who want to jump in the lake.

Or to make it Lightsokyo and have everything turn out peachy no matter how stupid Anonymous is.

I don't mean that. I mean anon couldn't agree what girl to go for. We'd jump from girl to girl every chance we'd get, even after a dream which screamed in our face to stop going for a harem end.

Clearly it should be FSN-style then, where you're locked onto one route and every wrong decision just leads to a BAD END and a reload.

Well I think that that sort of thing also depends on the type of story. Not everything can be free form but there area people that can pull it off convincingly. It really depends on the author to know his audience for this sort of thing.
