Why do they still count dragons as yakuhai when you have shousangen? It's somehow inconsistent

>> No.4849251

Because if shousangen is worth two han, not counting the yakuhai would make as if it wasn't a yaku. It's either worth 4 han, or 2 han + 2han from the two dragons, you choose, the result is the same.

The funny part is, I also rewatched the Saki episode were kana is taken down to 0 points just A FEW HOURS before. This is great, I am doing so horrible that my spiral of negative skill is collapsing into itself making it fun to watch, like a skyscraper on fire you can't help but watch the people jump out and kill themselves. Okay, every hand must have at least one "yaku" in order to win - simply making four melds and a pair isn't enough. Here's a list of yaku: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku

However, here's a little list of what you should focus on - just try and work on a couple, and once you get comfortable with them add more.

Yaku-hai - a triplet of one of the dragons, the round wind, or your wind.
Tan yao - No 1s, 9s, winds, or dragons.
Riichi - Don't call on any tiles (pon, chi or kan), and declare riichi meaning you only need one more tile. Try those three for now.

>> No.4886696

>>4886608
Also, even those are the most "common" yaku, you can use some common sense too.
All three of a kinds is probably worth something, right? right. 2 han.
Everything the same suit
A straight (123456789)
And identical sequences(456 456 (samesuit)) iipeikou.

There are only a few obscure yaku like chiitoitsu(seven pairs), some that involve the terminals(1s and 9s), Understanding how Pinfu works and the yakumans. The rest can be easily understood just but looking at the tiles and seeing "wow that looks similar" or something.

>> No.4886760

>>4886696
>A straight (123456789)
To clarify:
A straight is 123 456 789 (three melds).
12345667899 = 123 456 678 99 is not a straight.

>> No.4886800

I was playing with a friend who is pretty new, only knows basic yaku. And he pulled a monster single suit hand but took like 5 minutes on his turn before he discarded and afterwards ron'd illegally. It takes a lot of effort to be able to discern "how" your hand is when everything is similar like that, I suggest using
http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/bamboo/bamboo.html
to learn about single suits. (You have to know the japanese for tsumo, ron, riichi, etc but if you are playing on tenhou you should know them.)

Big hands come naturally when one of the suits is removed almost completely.
Not to mention the four extra dora tiles.

Someone figure out a way to play team matches of some kind.

>> No.4899541

>>4899534
2V2 is easy.

Play 4P knowing what are the two teams, and the team which got the player with more points in the end wins (ie dealing into your partner's hand is actually good).

>> No.4899552

>>4899541
I was thinking of something similar to what they did in Saki.
Each team would start with a big pile of points and the players would switch after one hanchan.

>> No.4899556

>>4899552
This would need at least 8 players if we play 4p.
Are there any mahjong programs/sites that would allow to set up such a match?

>> No.4899562

>>4899552
That's less fun, it's just your usual 4p. What I was talking about is Akagi-like 2V2.

>> No.4899563

Ten's multiplayer would be funner on the fact of how unstable everything is.

How was it done in Ten?
The same as Akagi, but the members were rotating?
Or do you mean the game where the teams had to make those certain hands?

>> No.4899608

>>4899591
Rotating one in which you couldn't gain points and, honestly that sounds like fun.

>> No.4899628

>>4899608
I'd love to play like that, but someone would have to make us a new mahjong program.

>> No.4899644

4P ari red, East and West of the first round are the main players, north and south's points don't matter, pairings are north-east and south-west. Close enough?

>> No.4899655

>>4899644
North and South would play defensively and try to deal into their partners hands?
I'm not skilled enough to play like this, I would just end up playing 100% defensively or going for a small hand to stop their yakumen.

>> No.4899657

>>4899655
Basically. I'm not that great at reading discards so I'd hate to be the support, but it might be interesting to try.

>> No.4899680

>>4899657
Seriously, "reading discards" isn't what you probably think it is. You will never know for sure what tile your opponent/partner is waiting for. Playing defensively is probably what you mean. It's not that hard, really, just discard tiles your opponent has already discarded. If none are available, see if there are some impossible waits (usually, these appear when four tiles of a kind are visible, that's called a Kabe), if there aren't, then go for improbable waits, ie discard suji. Of course, there are some easily readable ponds, the easiest ones being honitsu/chinitsu/kokushi, but most of the time your opponent will have a ryanmen wait and you won't have any way to know exactly which ryanmen it is.

>> No.4899696

>>4899680
I think he means reading discards to deal the winning tile for your partner.

>> No.4899703

>>4899696
It's exactly the same. Except you discard dangerous tiles instead of safe ones.

>> No.4899714

>>4899696
That. It's a lot easier to see safe tiles than pick out the winners to me - unless they're going for a very obvious hand like a chin itsu or something.

>> No.4899820 [DELETED]

See >>4899703.

I explained you how to recognize safe tiles. Now, in order to deal into your partner's hand, just discard the tiles in your hand which are NOT safe. Priorizing those which are safe against your opponent and not with your partner.
