I just started out recently. How valuable is the ability to reproduce kanji from memory? I usually recognize kanji I've learned pretty quickly, but I struggle to down words from memory.

when you're starting out with kanji it's a good idea to learn the stroke order, you will see that more complex kanji are made up of more simple kanji. so when you already know the stroke order of those simple kanji, you can guess what the stroke order of the more complex kanji is too. so you won't have to learn it

"kanjou" can literally mean 6 words and "on top of a warship" is the least popular one
Imaging hearing "寄港" (kikou) as a beginner. You'd never imaging something so short and basic could mean "stopping at a port", or 南下 (nanka) going south

I don't know Japanese very well. I barely learnt all hiragana but I'd like to think I've watched enough media to understand a few words. And the word for honourable suicide confuses me every time. In anime etc, i often see samurai refer to it as "seppuku". But if I watch an English translation of a Japanese video game etc it's always referred to as "sudoku" which just really confuses.
