God, this guy was manipulative and vicious as fucking hell, the game's fucking opening scene, and in the end pretty decently developed for an antagonist even though I thought most of his reasoning for his cruelness was pathetic and whiny, though actually understandable in a way. His last scene in Henri's route was pretty awesome too. I just realized he can pretty much be saying, "Bitches and whores."

Really, with Saya no Uta, it depends on your perspective on who is exactly the antagonist, or who is the protagonist. Typically, I imagine Kouji is the regular antagonist while the Doctor is the true villain.
However, looking at the story through Kouji's eyes, you can tell that both Saya and Fuminori become the antagonists.

>> No.4628036

>>4627981
>it depends on your perspective
Eh?
The antagonist is the character that plays the opposing role of the protagonist (the one you follow).
This actually means that when Fuminori is the protagonist, Kouji is is the antagonist and that Fuminori actually is the antagonist when the roles are switched and Kouji takes the place of the protagonist.
So both of them plays the roles of both protagonist and antagonists at different parts of the novel.

But you can argue on whether or not there are villains and who they are and all that.

By your very own definition of the words, there was nothing wrong with my (>>4627628) post; other than the fact that it might be 'off-topic' but that's just semantics.

>> No.4628109

>>4628036
Oops, I must have not made my post clear enough, I did try to mean what you had said. Saya's narrator/protagonist changes quite frequently depending on which route you take. At the end of the story, when you have a large enough emotional connection to the characters, I think you can decide who really was the villain or the "problem" for either Fuminori/Kouji.

I figured that the post was either simply off-topic as seems to have been the case, or someone who mixed things up again.
I actually figured that it might have been the former, as nothing was wrong with calling him a villain yet protagonist, but I responded as I did anyway.

Yes, 'assholes getting in the way' by trying to help him/get him to open up to them after the accident. Surely that means they should die, be raped, eaten, and so on?

Sure, in their perception, they were only doing what they had to, to keep their private little comfort zone alive, but in doing so, Fuminori willingly threw aside the people who cared about him without even giving them a single chance. Saya had other options when it came to food, and raping that schoolfriend of his into a tortured existance was just fucking upside down. They were selfish bastards, but one of them was a monster who viewed humans in the same way bratty teenagers see mice "they're small/less powerful, killing them is fine because I am superior", whereas Fuminori was just plain crazy and trying to preserve his last slice of sanity by any means necessary.

>> No.4628270

>>4627341
This guy. Not only because he's the biggest asshole I've seen outside of an NTR game, but also because he's the weakest part of the game, since he has no motivation other than being an asshole. I thought they were gonna actually develop him into a decent character when Chris and Lise snuck into his house to look for the score, but then it goes straight back to mindless cruelty for no good reason. He drags an otherwise excellent route down so much.

I don't know. I'm pretty sure months of living in that state would have an effect on me too, but if I hated it so much, I would at least make some effort to rectify it. In one hand I could take my open knowledge of why this is happening to me and seek medical help and support from others, which is offered to me constantly, or in the other hand I can totally disregard all options to help myself and instead resign myself to living tortured forever. I think i'd go with "AAAAAAAAAA HELP". Also, this is irrelevent. Koji is not the 'bad guy' by a long shot.

>>4628287
Again, this is besides the point, it doesn't make Saya's adversaries the badguys. Hell, wanting to assimilate a species doesn't make her evil either, however, torture-raping someone for a long period, reducing her to an agonised existance in which the person she fell in love with rapes her (and thinks she is complying, because of his mental condition)? Yeah, that doesn't strike me as something anyone in a positive role does. Admittedly, the rape bullshit seemed tacked on to suit the fetish crowd. I would have been far more able to empathise with Saya if not for that.

I don't think I can ever really like Fuminori and Saya. I mean, at the beginning they were okay, but once I saw what happened to the others and how Kouji just truly wanted to save his god damn friend, I could only side with him. Although, I think everyone in the end gets a bad end. Kouji either dies or commits suicide, Fuminori becomes insane/dies or gets locked up. The rest I assume die or go insane.
I guess in the end, some characters are just more sympathetic than others.

>> No.4628449

>>4628406
For some reason, I had a feeling she knew about Fuminori's condition. She wanted to pry him open and make him confess it, so she could go kill Saya. I'd say the Doctor is probably one of the more static characters who is hard to sympathize with. (That doesn't stop her from being cool though)

>> No.4628465

That is why Saya no Uta was good; you can empathise with the main villains (fuminori and saya). I loved how the game made no effort to fully disguise the horrors either. It always made it very apparent that whilst what you are seeing is beautiful through Fuminori's eyes, it only means the reality is nighmarishly horrible. Such as Saya's blossoming. A tear-jerkingly bittersweet moment, so beautiful, and yet at the same time you can only imagine what it looks to those able to see reality as it is.

Saya no Uta put the "love" in Lovecraft, even monsters can have beating hearts, and beauty is often in the eye of the beholder.

>> No.4628505

>>4628449
It was said during the length of the story that she highly suspected him of having something wrong, but her hands were tied until he opened up. It is only later that she hears of Saya, and ends up getting more deeply involved and revealing more of her past.

>>4628364
I'm not so sure Saya was meant to be an "innocently goodwilled yet horribly ugly alien." Even disregarding the 'tacked-on' rape scene, she only found Fuminori because she enjoyed terrorising mental patients during the night. She's a nasty one alright, but not one-dimenionally bad.

Why do people on /jp/ tend to always give Kouji the short end of the straw?
I can sympathize with both sides, but didn't you guys rage when Kouji had his girlfriend and friend murdered by Fuminori, a friend that he in a sense also had lost. He had his entire future wrecked, and it also looked kind of promising.
And the scene with him in the well was also very emotional.
