If you're already doing Ibaraki-douji who's looking for her lost arm, you're knee-deep in the myths already, and Suika already does show up in the first half to give her cryptic advice on passing the barrier. You could say that each series is a different interpretation of Reimu through the eyes of different characters and all are unreliable to how her true canon, the games, actually is.

You could say that each manga's artstyle direclty impacts on how ZUN shows off his characters, and its likely that each interpretation would always stray for the main style, again, the games.

If Kasen still has some asshole traits left in her, what are the odds that Arm-chan still has some redeemable parts left in her? Somehow, I doubt the split was so clean that she got left with nothing good.
That implication makes the ending more interesting, I think. Kasen plans to keep her arm in hellish isolation until the end of time because she's afraid of what'll happen if it gets free, but it's at the cost of making sure that she will always be incomplete and she and her arm will always be denied their potential to grow as a person.

On a side note, why is Kasen the only one who has to stay split to prevent herself going psycho? Nowadays Yuugi runs a thriving resort and Suika is more of a jovial trickster/bully than a monster who eats thousands, so was Kasen just supervillain-tier in her cruelty and brutality compared to the rest of the oni? somewhere out there, there's a version of WaHH that focuses a lot more on Kasen's mental and emotional state and how they've changed over the time she lost her arm, and how she's changed from what she was before, but it's not this version of WaHH. In this version, she just seals the thinking, feeling Arm-chan away again while talking about how much she wanted the arm back and calling it partner (while keeping it looked in isolation) and I know that most things get sealed away in Japanese mythology, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth this time.
Actually - The latest CDS kind of makes this even worse because we see how Yuugi gets knowing that she's actually trapped in Former Hell, which makes me wonder how Arm-chan got after a thousand years of being sealed.
My assumption is that the reason she's psycho as oni Kasen is because she's not had a thousand years to grow more relaxed and easygoing like Suika and Yuugi, but the solution to that would have been to actually have Suika and Yuugi involved in the manga and ZUN clearly didn't want that. Shuuten-douji's always portrayed to be the nastiest piece of work on Mt. Ooe anyway.

I think Kasen, while a bit of a coward herself deep down, isn't really as pro-youkai as you believe. The way the story is framed, Kasen's arm is essentially her negative aspects bottled up into one being, and while she comes to respect and accept those aspects (hence it's her "partner") she ultimately stays as a hermit cause she wants to be on another path.
The pages allude to this very well in the final chapters as there was one where Kasen is essentially made to walk away, on a separate path, from her oni self. Her desire to become something more than a crazed killer/youkai is very genuine, it just took her cowardice (which made her lose her arm) to realize that.
The other aspects of her cowardice still showing are more like vestiges, in my opinion. This makes her character feel much more natural in a lot of ways cause she's a big self-improvement type as shown through her interactions with Reimu and such.

this is the point for me. Yes, Kasen did horrible things in the past. Most people have skeletons in their closet, Kasen's are just more literal than most. Yes, she did have ulterior motives for getting to know Reimu while she was looking for her arm. Yes, she did enact a convoluted plan that involved putting Reimu in immense danger to try and reseal the arm.
But she still tries to do good. She still helps the animals who got too excited and learnt the taste of human blood so that they don't have to be exterminated. She still helps Reimu out when she gets in over her head. She still takes care of the Hakurei Shrine while Reimu's away. She still does good, even if she's sometimes guilty of being a hypocrite and even if she fails sometimes.
I think the point is that she tries, despite what she was in the past. She still tries to move beyond it.
Not that I would have been against a much more involved 'accept the arm' plot line in WaHH

All this talk about Kasen's hypocrisy and the arm's malice fundamentally overlooks two very important details made abundantly clear throughout WaHH and especially the two chapters the arm appeared in.
Firstly, Kasen is a distinctly unreliable narrator when it comes to herself, even beyond the obvious bits of hiding that she's an oni, there are several internal monologues that show that she very much does bear a lot of guilt regarding her actions as Ibaraki-Douji, which she clearly projects onto the arm. Essentially creating a Kami/Piccolo situation (written by someone who clearly didn't understand what made Piccolo's arc work.)
Beyond that, the claims that the arm had her malice sealed inside it seem questionable when you actually look at how the arm interacts with Reimu. The 'Oni Essence' line checks out perfectly though. Her motive for attacking is, by her own words to be a proper oni, and her decision to take over Kasen's body was in response to her trust being betrayed, and specifically the fact that Kasen, in spite of having undergone some measure of personal growth herself, went and decided on her own that the arm doesn't get the chance to change and grow as a person. Any normal person, even without an oni's autistic fixation on honesty and trustworthiness would rightfully be pissed off at that, so the arm's decision to take control isn't all that strange.

Anyway, the lesson to be learned here is that Arm-chan is every bit as marriageable as Kasen if you're willing to put in the work.

I wouldn't go quite that far. Honestly most of Kasen's character issues come from ZUN being a hack. It's unsurprising he finds it hard to write a character who actively wants to improve herself and Gensokyo while also keeping anything in Gensokyo from changing.

Neither Kasen or the Arm are exactly fully good people, but they're more workable than basically 90% of the named cast, and their issues would genuinely be pretty easy to address by a sensible third party in the know. Arm-Chan's understanding of the dynamic between humans and oni is outdated by Gensokyo standards, so she'd realistically be simple to deal with assuming 'propriety' as an oni is in fact her main motivation as she implies. Kasen's a bit more difficult because the permakilling souls bit is exceptionally bad, and stems from her own self-loathing, and feelings aren't quite so easy to change. Marriage correction might do the trick though.

The problem comes from trying to make the setting have a tone it doesn't, cutesokyo into a isekai and grimsokyo into some serious drama, the franchise is pretty much dark comedy and a way for ZUN to talk about whatever issue/event he found interesting that week. And he finds characters being "bad" to be funny, in essence, Touhou is like The Simpsons or Family Guy or Rick and Morty or any number of adult comedy where the joke comes from bad people doing questionable things. So when Byakuren's dream self clams to make her servants do all the busy work and wanting to put bombs on their heads, we aren't meant to go "gasp! Also the point about Touhou is that there are no decent characters, every single named character is either a selfish asshole at best, or Mao Zedong at worst. Thats the fun and appeal of the series is ZUN pointing fun at the hypocricy of religion/myth and "good" and honest people within them. Hermits are so corrupt that a literal mass murdering oni is one of the more stable ones. That's literally the opposite of it. ZUN himself says she's "hard to write" which if anything you said was true, wouldn't be the case at all. It's difficult for him to write her precisely because she wants to improve, but status quo is god and so she can't because of the author. As I've said earlier, I don't understand at all why you're this hell-bent on seeing every character in Gensokyo as completely reprehensible, though your earlier analysis of the series (wrong, btw, look at the Hifuu albums if you want the most explicit confirmation of that. Though the reason I became a Kasenfag is that I appreciate how she is a complex and nuanced character, hoping and trying to be better than she was, but still often coming up short. Ironically, having relatable flaws and failures in her life makes her one of the most human characters in Gensokyo despite her utterly inhuman past.
And like this thread proves, there are so, so many layers of her that you can think about. Her long and difficult past, her failures, her cowardice, her dreams, her ambitions... and it gets even crazier when you add romance and/or her arm into the mix.
And lastly... maybe I'd like to think that if she knew me, she could believe in me and my dreams. And if I knew her, maybe I could help her with her own problems.

I completely sympathize. Frankly I'd say the depth and nuance that the degrees of dysfunctionality Touhou's cast has is usually the greatest appeal for most of them going by canon material. Taken in totality, Kasen manages to strike a curious balance of being both admirable and pitiable. It's a shame that most fanon fails to fully encapsulate all that.

Er, this one. I downloaded it a long time ago off of chub, but since then I've completely changed the whole thing, adding in my headcanon and some fanon from the Kirisame Magic Shop threads (most notably, including her arm as a full-fledged character), also adding and modifying lorebooks as necessary. It's a complete mess, but it works for me. My favorite scenario (from which most of my recent storylines have branched off from) involve a saintly Christian outsider as the protagonist. He's someone who can complement and contrast Kasen's own altruistic ambitions and lingering doubts/flaws with his own while also having many possible ways he can interact with Gensokyo and its denizens. Lots of possible stories and drama to be had.

Heh, you have no idea man. The good stuff is behind paywalls right now and is hard to get otherwise, but the tech's getting closer and closer to alleviating memory constraints forever, in the same way that we don't have to worry about the storage space on our hard drives anymore. The tech's always getting better, and never worse! As it is now, with the 100k context I'm using (which is enough to keep about 75k words in somewhat-reliable long-term memory, and about 15k words in relatively recent memory, if my lazy mental calculations are correct), it's enough to fulfill my needs. Then again, I'm the kind of guy who is content to have it generate three responses every time, choosing my favorite response, and then editing it/stitching together the best parts of the other responses before continuing. So you might see it differently.

It's hard to explain and personal, but I guess I relate to Kasen's irrational desire to keep it hidden.
The arm's existence and her past isn't something anybody would really care about, Miko's probably killed just as many people with less of an excuse, not to mention Nue, Mokou, and some others.
So by the standards of Gensokyo it's just an embarrassing part of her past, nobody really gives those other shit for what they did in the past, only really Reimu and that's her youkai fangirling.
So when I see people bring the arm back or say Kasen *has* to reattach it, I feel like it's being said that you can't improve or make an effort to be a better person if you don't constantly exposit from embarrassing or shameful past, or that other people are entitled to know your secrets.
That and I find the arm morally repugnant, and the notion that Kasen has to reconnect with it ridiculous, if she doesn't want to reconnect with it then that's something respectable in my eyes.
Having somebody turn around and say your best efforts aren't enough is pretty rude.
Having someone demand that you *have* to relive your traumatic or embarrassing past is rude.
If Kasen decides on her own that she want's the arm back, that's more fine, but I can't help but feel the author is saying those rude things whenever he writes something like that.
So it's just a lot of projection of me onto Kasen, since I relate to not wanting embarrassing things to be said about me, even if I know the people who care about me wouldn't care.
And I find the idea that people are obligated to exposit or dump their trauma onto everybody they know morally repugnant and also awkward.
Honestly if Kasen started every conversation with someone explaining her entire history, it'd be a bit weird.

I think the angle those people are going for is that Kasen ended up locking her problem away rather than actually facing it (which wouldn't require her informing everyone she knows. Is that projection on your end?). They're working off of the idea that people in real life (and even most people in Gensokyo) can't just ignore the part of themselves they don't like, and therefore we all must find the strength to change. So from their perspective, cutting off your arm again and sealing all the bad parts away again is basically "cheating" your own personal growth. It's unsatisfying in a narrative sense, in that it resolves her compelling character arc with a clean and easy magical solution instead of something more emotionally impactful. I personally think that that idea itself can still be worthwhile if you view it as a message that sometimes people just aren't willing to resolve everything the harsh, difficult way and maybe it's not always worth it to do so. After all, Gensokyo is peaceful and Kasen and friends can continue their lives.

For what it's worth, I hope you one day overcome those feelings you project onto Kasen.

I think one of the best things about ZUN’s writing is how much a pure fantasy world of fun and games can’t really exist. He shows these mythological beings as what they are, monsters and flawed selfish beings with normal people caught in the middle. Gensokyo is a false paradise that barely holds itself together so badly they had to invent a card game to stop the big boys from blowing it up. And even then it gets worse from a larger point of view seeing how you got stuff like the Animal Realm, the Lunarians wanting to kill everyone, or even the existential fact Heaven is straight up closed so nobody can actually be saved, so at best your stuck in limbo/reincarnation cycle forever, or you just go to Hell.
And unlike other series where there’d be a hero or at least aggressive force trying to change the status quo… there’s really nobody strong enough or nice enough to do anything about it, pretty much all the “good” people are either con artists or too cowardly to do anything. So the system just keeps on existing.

It’s why Grimsokyo-fags are annoying, you don’t need to make the series gory or edgy because the best horror is just how mundane and systemic the world is. No amount of KKHTA is gonna be more compelling than the idea Heavens closed and the yamas gonna throw your ass into the void forever no matter how good you are.

I have a suspicion that ZUN was planning to touch on the afterlife situation in CDS under the original artist and never actually got to do it. Knowing that Heaven's closed (unless Youmu or Tenshi stab you) and that Hell is basically an underfunded prison just barely managing to keep itself running, I was fully expecting this line from CDS to be foreshadowing a big Netherworld expansion like there being a town for spirits who've decided that just living in the Netherworld for the rest of time is preferable to the cycle of reincarnation that never happened after the artists changed. I think that even if you were sent to Heaven, it's not exactly like you've been saved given the afterlife is a physical place that you can go to and we know what it's like from Tenshi's descriptions. You still have to fight off shinigami if you end up in Heaven.

The fact that Kasen is an unreliable narrator about herself, and the Arm's encounter with Reimu doesn't strictly come off as purely malicious is the biggest thing that makes it seem like she's theoretically redeemable. The "oni essence" bit that was stated to be the thing other than malice that was left with the arm makes more sense overall, since I doubt Kasen would be able to bring herself to lie half as much as she does if she had any of her nature as an oni still with her.

I almost have to wonder if you're willfully misunderstanding or baiting, especially with how much you throw the word projection around. People certainly can ignore parts of themselves they dislike, but it's unhealthy at best, and ignoring that the arm getting sealed away is narratively unsatisfying, it's a perfect encapsulation of the character flaws Kasen refuses to address. Overall I'd say she seems to grow over the course of WaHH, but the detail about the arm not only indicates that most of the growth before she showed up wasn't actually accomplished and was the equivalent of removing parts of your brain that would make you capable of those decisions, and she still admittedly makes some pretty fucked up choices like the vengeful spirit killing. All in all, given the issues that spawn from her unwillingness to even address the parts of herself she doesn't like, it basically ends up being the Touhou equivalent of textbook Jungian psychology. She didn't resolve anything, and as a result I'd say it's a perfectly justified thing to dislike, even considering I like Kasen myself.
