The bottom line is that youkai have a reputation for terrorizing humans. Because of this, the heroic humans rose up to fight them. Reimu is one of those humans. They aren't exactly still at war, but there is bad history between them. It does bear resemblance to racial war in some aspects, but Reimu has demonstrated time and again her willingness to be tolerant and accept her former enemies. I mean fuck she throws feasts for them all to come and socialize with her, what more do you want?

Both Reimu and Marisa are extremely charismatic when it comes to youkai, but for different reasons.

Reimu is a huge bitch, but her arrogance and confidence attract powerful youkai from all over to her shrine.

Marisa is cheerful and extroverted, and many of the youkai she beats up end up liking her. Which is all well and good for her, since she ends up robbing them blind.

Such is Touhou.

and as has been pointed out plenty of times in this thread, Reimu regularly sets their differences aside and gets along with youkai, she even teams up with them in Imperishable Night. She's not some horrible person, she's just someone trying to protect humanity from those who may threaten them. It's a tough position to be in.

This thread has actually made me admire Reimu so much I kind of want to make her my waifu now.
