And you know what, maybe he just doesn't want to. Maybe he wants to control the design of these characters. Unpopular opinion here, but I'm all for it. Let him draw his stuff and the super otakus can take it from there and do all their lovely doujins and such and such.
I fear it'll become too much like most other anime if someone else tries to do it.

I like ZUN's style. It's clear he's not a professional-tier artist and sometimes makes outrageous anatomy mistakes (see Satori or EoSD's Sakuya) but I like the imperfections and for the most part while not conventionally eye pleasing as far as anime-adjascent art styles go, it is very characteristic. And he did improve technically since the early Windows-era days. I just wish he'd kept more of the watercolor influence in his digital art.

And he made an official Lily White portrait.

I'll give you the coloring, because Takane definitely looks "sovlless" as some would put it.
But the actual design is fine. Yeah there are some glaring anatomical error (lmao the neck) but it's hardly new with ZUN.

It's indicative of a bigger problem that he has, that being that he doesn't give nearly as much of a fuck about his own IP as he ought to. He treats it too casually and doesn't think deeply about it as he should. It's why he makes random retcons with no explanation, lazily upholds the stories status quo so characters never develop (see WaHH) and leaves hundreds of characters in the dust never to be used in any story and why he didn't bother to improve his art. He had 20 long years to steadily improve his art but he simply never had the passion or the autism or drive to do it. It all feels so low effort. The only saving grace is that he lets the community do almost anything they want so more passionate fans can take the story (and art) in better directions than his dumbass ever could.

I don't feel like browsing /jp/ archives right now, but few months ago there was thread explaining it.
tl;dr is that a lot of early 2hu art was in lesser or larger quantity traced from various manga and shits and while this worked when 2hu was purely a Doujin project expected to be released to 1000 people at one convention at max, currently it would not fly and ZUN needed to abandon it.
He also seems to be better at traditional art than digital, making me feel like this faggot should just invest into a scanner instead of drinking beer with BeatMario.

the wood block is one of the best things ZUN's ever done. I really wish he'd draw more often, just for fun. It seems like he rarely does stuff like drawings or composing for fun anymore, because that was the sort of thing that ended up on the hifuu Cds

Fact that Touhou is not ZUN's beloved passion project and just another franchise expected to shit out cooontent as often as possible is just that, a fact.
It's not even a real doujin project anymore, considering that most of its content has actual publishing and is sold mostly outside of doujin conventions.

Yeah it's a shame his traditional style doesn't transfer good over to digital. Main issue is that his lineart style doesn't match his colouring style. I have the same problem with my art and it's fucking annoying.
'Old Style' or 'SOVL'

Unrelated but its criminal that we havent gotten a joke about Ran effortlessly generating AI images either from fanon or ZUN himself. Also kind of ironic that he shits on AI while Ran has the capabilities of one and is one of the relatively nicer characters.
