Hi! I just finished mastering kana, and I'm wondering where I should go next.

Just for a little context, I've been studying Japanese on and off for the past 2.5 years, but up until recently, all of my studying was just doing a Duolingo every once in a while (I'm currently about halfway through Section 2 Unit 1,) or, if you count it as studying/learning Japanese, watching anime & listening to city pop lol.

I want to start getting more serious with my Japanese learning, and devoting more time to it, so now that I can read and write kana without any extra thought, I don't know where to go next. I feel like so many different paths just opened up, and I don't know which one to take.

Should I focus on learning/improving my grammar before anything else? Should I just focus on learning different vocabulary/kanji first, if so what type of vocab do I start with? Should I do a mix of the two, and once again, if so, where do I start?

Also, where is the best place for me to learn all of this stuff? I do have the Genki Volume 1 Version 3 book, but I don't know if I should start with that, or enter with some more knowledge before hand. Also, what's up with Anki? How exactly do you use it efficiently, do you just download a pre-made deck, or make your own?

TL;DR I have no clue what I should focus on studying next, and would like some guidance on what to work on.

anki is digital flashcards. don't listen to anyone here about it, just read the guides in the OP and download the decks listed there. eventually, you can begin to make your own decks, (called "mining") with words that you find in anime/VNs/manga/whatever.

textbooks can be beneficial but you'll probably be better off with something like Cure Dolly or tae kim. guides in the OP will help a lot
ime doing grammar/vocab at the same time is the best, but you'll figure it out as you go along

japanese is really like minecraft, you make your grass top basic starter base(dolly/tk/core) and start gathering stuff in the wild to bring back to store safely, as you gather stuff in the wild you work on a nicer main base/expand your current one(active immersion) and automated farms (passive immersion) till you have a lot of materials saved up(N1), at this point you work on the big project/final base in earnest(fluency), using all the materials previously in new and creative, more refined ways, occasionally having to seek out specific rare materials needed till your done, and just like minecraft, you're never trully done with it you can always work on a new project if you want to, expand this one out to the landscape, or just quit.
in the end it just comes down to making your own fun, not quitting and being persistent. if you do this you eventually will have something you can look back on proudly that you did it.

Lets think about “Minecraft school”. from my limited understanding, i think the biggest problem with big anki decks is that words are very hard to learn without a memory of the experience of encountering the word. that doesnt mean anki is useless, but i think you'll retain terms at a slower rate than stuff you pick up in conversation or reading. i struggle a lot with memorizing the cards and have to do a lot of reps unless ive encountered a word in the wild already, in which case i have it basically down pat. might just be my memory experience though.
