i guess touhou has a niche for everyone but in zunose's case it's the equivalent of taking that suffering porn fic you wrote when you were 14 and never iterating on it. i unironically think taking the piss out of KKHTA was more fulfilling than anything of his i've read; there's just not much of substance, it's a disjointed version of Gensokyo where everything sucks now because the author has a fetish for suffering. touhou canon and most of fanon does a good job of not making youkai into contrived flanderisations of themselves, but i think with the toned up violence zunose and his grimsokyo ends up doing that anyway. it'd sort of make sense if it were set in a gensokyo, say, a few hundred years ago, but even then it's just not fun to read about unless there's something to counter how utterly nihilistic it is

oh, and specifically yukari. like, really? eating someone's head on a platter? is ran going to cut off the bits where rumia chomped on? it's just totally out of character to me. i dislike how in fanon yukari's either an incompetent oaf or a murderous sociopath, like she has a BIT more nuance, even if her primary job is teleporting humans into muenzuka as food in canon she's not a demon lady. did old exorcist man basically commit suicide? i just don't get the point of this doujin in the slightest

I've been thinking about it and outside of his genuine comedy doujins, I think the only actually good doujins he's done are RAINFALL and Moriya Sama
RAINFALL is pretty good because the youkai all help the humans survive the flooding without any real gorewank or edgy 'it's so we can eat them hehehehe' bullshit, and aside from Yukari doing a smug and pointless speech, it's actually pretty normal as a doujin
and I like Moriya Sama because it's a fun mystery story about reality being messed with to erase characters from existence (again, without much edgy gorewank) and has some cool moments

Abe no Seimei is practically the Merlin of Japan, being the son of noble and a fox spirit.

It's symptomatic of Zounose's larger problem. The Sekibanki doujin spends almost its entire length showcasing that the body is the "core" and non-interchangeable part of her physiology, while the heads are many, interchangeable and even disposable. Then the epilogue flips that 180 degrees for no reason but our boy author reaaally wanted to put some gore in an otherwise, as you said, gag doujin. He invalidates the fundamental premise he himself presented earlier, never mind the tone of the work - just to satisfy his strange fixation on graphic violence.

This isn't any less egregious in his more "serious" stories, where he'll bend over backwards and flagrantly ignore the established setting in order to indulge his silly gore lust. It's just poor writing, and I can't take it seriously. Why would I, if even the author drops all shits given at the drop of a hat?

Does it? Part of the running gag is how much *not* like Banki the body's acting, even more so than the heads, so I didn't really give it much thought other than "oh a story about multiples of a person going through identity crisis, how original".
Course I didn't see the ending coming either, but it is something I just came to expect from him, and the explanation that she has a "core" head was good enough. Not like it matters anyway; the story ending in a it was a dream I had moment make just as much sense.

That said, I do get where you're coming from, though my opinion remains unchanged but that's neither here nor there.

Back in the day, Buddhism was considered a pretty alien religion in Japan. People just abandoning society, doing weird unseen rituals, and living on mountains looked pretty weird.
Onis are the same. They are a very Buddhist inspired folktale, but instead of being just hell's wardens, they got mixed up with the very bad bandit issue going on in Japan, so the evil murderers from the mountains got mixed with the violent ogre demons from hell.

Speaking of funny, Canni-Can is another one obviously written back in the day, when the only thing known about the yamawaro is that they're an offshoot of the kappa and they like to play war. Otherwise they would've clamored to take part in the human factory business.
Not to mention other youkai that also made their home in the mountain that would've had issues with that large processing plant.

So yeah the factory got destroyed in MEAT MATE MEET probably because there are too many things going on now.
