If you're new to photography, whatever they have at the local walmart equivalent is as good a place to start as any. Gear matters far less in the beginning, and even your phone is a great place to begin building up an idea of not just how to take better photos, but what kind of photos you want to take in the first place. Then if you want to get a fancy camera down the line, you'll be better prepared to understand what you actually want to do and what tools you will need in order to do it. Working with what you already own is the best way to grow!

>do people purchase fancy DSLR cameras just for doll pictures?
no, they buy fancy MILCs (DSLRs are "old school" now), then 10x that in lenses
but don't despair!
that's just the japanese way, they work too much and have no time, so they just spend absurd amounts on their hobbies to make up for it
in all seriousness though, poke around used listings on ebay a bit and $1,000 will get you a great beginner kit
actually, you can probably get a decent older DSLR (~10y) with kit lens for $500, get a $50 tripod off amazon (indispensable especially for dolls), and go from there
modern phone cameras are amazing quality these days so you can totally just do that like >>45486916 suggests
personally I'd still go for the DSLR, because it will give you a lot of control over the image that might be difficult with camera app controls (manual focus is most important imo, followed by manual exposure settings)
there's a lot to learn but also a lot of beginner photography tutorials on youtube etc.

I bought my Canon T7 with a stabilizer lens for 600CAD new, so you can do a lot with, what I assume is, 1k USD.

Mirrorless cameras are becoming the standard, so you have the tradeoff of paying more and future proofing, or less with amore mature tech. God knows how many used DSLR I've seen on Facebook that are barely used and going for half what I paid.

Irc the most important difference between fancy high end vs low end cameras is the ability to better capture moving objects like sports and whatever, besides the "full frame" thing

What I mean by this is that you can absolutely do amazing doll photography with the most budget DSLR camera, what matters the most is the lense and in this type of photography the second thing that matters the most is lighting.

Though I recommend buying a cheap DSLR camera that has an extendable LCD panel so you can take ground level pictures and etc way more comfortably, something like Nikon D5300 (in contrast with Nikon D3300 that does not have extendable LCD panel)

Easy peazy anon
Get a nice 'starter' DSLR like a Nikon D3400 or Canon Rebel. You can usually find used or 'refreshed' ones on Amazon for around $400-500, but it can fluctuate a little. It'll come with a kit lens (the kind that changes between lots of focal points) you'll want something better later. A 50mm lens is great for doll photos, and should be around $150. But you'll be good with a kit lens for starting.
Get a decent tripod for it and a shutter release remote, a good tripod should be around 40-50 dollars and a release should be around $15-25
A lighting kit is next, nothing scary or big, you're lighting something small anyway. Make sure it's defused light so you get softer lighting and something that can shift between warm and cool lighting is best. Cheap ring lights do this, get two, or you can get a cheap softbox kit and change the bulbs for white temp controlled ones for around the same price.
That's it, you'll be good to go, start playing around see what works, and what doesn't. You'll take hundreds of pictures for one or two good ones, and that's normal.
Pic releated, just threw it together on Amazon right now.

Are resin dolls durable? I mean, provided they're handled with care. Or are they crystal tier fragile things that you have to sweat about every time you move them?

>> No.45540172

>>45540146
Fingers and other thin, delicate parts can be troublesome, especially on smaller dolls. Anything that's long and thin like fingers, wings, or antlers need to be treated especially delicately. The thicker parts like arms, legs, and so on are much sturdier, especially if you take care of them. Scratches and so on can still occur (and paint will inevitably wear off of moving parts like joints because of the nature of friction,) but generally speaking I don't worry about them too much. Honestly, though obviously I'd not want this to happen, I'm pretty sure I could throw some of the thickest pieces of resin I have directly at a wall and it's the wall that would come away damaged. So, while care is needed, you don't have to be afraid to breathe around them, or to pose and fiddle with them for that matter.

>> No.45540302

>>45540172
Oh yeah I imagine that especially a larger doll falling off balance would result in damage, but I was talking about fiddling with the joints and so on. I've seen a video where someone unboxed a doll and a piece of resin chipped off the ankle right after opening. I hope this isn't common.
When joints wear too much, you can replace them, right? I assume you can buy spares directly from the seller if they're still in business, or even a whole new body. I like this aspect quite a lot.
I have learned that you just use pastels to do blushing and face-ups. I assume this is art pastels or chalks and not a special type? And then what kind of fixative do you use?

>> No.45540395

>>45540302
Chalk pastels are what most people use, don't use anything oil-based as it can stain the resin. Watercolor pencils are also used for sketching out the design, I believe, and others may use acrylic or gouache, depending on the type of work they do -- as well as an airbrush if they have one, in the case of things like body blushing or painting fantasy parts. Seal in layers as you go so that if you make a mistake, you can go back and fix it without having to start from scratch. Most people generally swear by Mr. Super Clear Matte UV Cut, but that's subject to availability in your area (most likely online.) Wear a mask and spray somewhere with good ventilation, you don't want to breathe it in.

I have chipped some joints in this manner, if the parts are thin it can happen. This generally won't affect the usability of the doll, but I know some are more invested in the aesthetics than I am. Generally speaking, resin is pretty sturdy under any amount of normal use. The strings need to be replaced from time-to-time as the elastic loses tension, but generally speaking it it's a pretty reliable material.

Buying replacement parts is... I have no idea, I imagine for many limited releases it would be next to impossible unless they share a body with something still for sale. Replacing a body is easier, though if mixing and matching between companies, resin colors vary wildly and can be tricky to match up.

I feel like some companies would be more willing/able to offer replacement parts than others based purely on if they still have the ability to cast those parts. Has anyone here ever had to replace a resin joint in specific?

>> No.45540453

>>45540395
The company I'm buying from sells various heads and one body for all, so I shouldn't have issues getting spares.
>others may use acrylic or gouache, depending on the type of work they do
amazing, it's like a canvas. It's hard to believe none of this stains the resin.
I'll have to learn body blushing because only the heads come painted and commissioning this kind of job is too much of a bother. I assume body blushing is far easier than face-ups so I can do it myself.

>> No.45540498

>>45540453
People seal the resin with MSC (or whatever sealant they use) before they work on the heads to prevent stains. Usually three coats (with drying time between each layer,) and then they work. Body blushing isn't necessarily easier as it is done with less tools -- it's still a skill that requires experience and time to figure out, so don't be discouraged if you accidentally make your dolls looks like bread in the beginning, because everyone starts somewhere. And remember to seal anything you work on both before you start and once you're done to keep your work in place. Body blushing inevitably wears off with time -- changing clothes, moving joints, setting them on surfaces, and the like simple wears it away! But some people enjoy the process of working on their dolls, and don't mind this aspect of their care.

>don't be discouraged if you accidentally make your dolls looks like bread in the beginning, because everyone starts somewhere
Gee I hope not. I have no experience in makeup but I paint and use dry media a lot, so I hope I'll do at least an OK job. I was thinking of powdering chalk pastels and applying them with a cotton bud or something to the like. I definitely dislike when face-ups and blushing are too bold like bright red knuckles and knees, so I want to do something subtle and minimal.

>It's hard to believe none of this stains the resin.
Honestly it's probably going to come down to the pigment if you're using watercolor or acrylics. Certain colors are known for staining paper, and likely have a chance of staining on resin as well; typically these are certain vibrant reds and yellows, as well as some blues. I don't know how much this impacts resin for sure, since I haven't done any sort of testing with it. Som staining colors like Alizarin Crimson are generally undesirable anyways, since they aren't lightfast and will fade.
>I assume body blushing is far easier than face-ups so I can do it myself.
You can mostly work more broadly and get away with it. You can also get super into it: I know when I've done it I always went pretty light on detail, since most of it's going to under clothes anyways.
>>45540556
>I was thinking of powdering chalk pastels and applying them with a cotton bud or something to the like.
I powdered chalk pastels and applied them with brushes from a set of makeup brushes. You can also mix in a little water and use them like paint if you want some more defined lines.

it does if you don't seal them first. You need to use a resin-safe sealant, and then paint on that. It's like prepping a canvas, which is also a process. After that, you can paint the doll safely (with doll safe paints and pastels, NEVER anything for humans.)

I got sent over here by buyfag on /a/. I checked your guide and it states that vinyl stains easily, which makes sense. However, the doll I'm getting are the Nendoroid Dolls, which are supposedly made of PVC and ABS. I would assume that as such, you don't have to store them naked then. But someone in the buythread had a horror story about them getting stained? On a somewhat related note, I've had my Azone 1/3 Syaro doll in a black dress (also made by Azone) with black cloth directly on her skin for years and she hasn't stained. Black socks from an unknown dealer stained Tiara's (MDD) feet from just a couple days.

I'm a bit of both. I really like figmas and figuarts figures for their posability and customization.
I got into dolls because the scales are more standard so it's easier to find clothes and accessories for them. Also much more customizable. I just like having tiny people around the house with me and I found out dolls are perfect for that, but I still buy and playbwith my figmas because they scratch a different itch.

I'm making the switch because I got tired of so many things about action figures and model kits. No matter how carefully you handle them they WILL break or get loose or have paint problems because in the end I think they're not meant for being fiddled with but they're just display items that you're supposed to put on a shelf. The prices are getting crazy, QC worse, companies only offer support to Japanese customers, everything is preorders so you have to buy blind, aftermarket/scalping. It's more stress than fun. I like photography so I thought I'd cave in and get a BJD. I also dislike plastic clothing because it limits articulation so much so you can only get nice poses with naked figures. Synthetic Human is the only figure I can say I'm 100% happy with.

>> No.45562127

>>45562091
Yeah, the market for action figures and kits has been having a lot of issues. But I still haven't made a complete switch because buying a doll feels like a bigger commitment, at least for me. I have to choose the right one, choose the right wigs and eyes for her, shop for clothes, take care of her, etc. Meanwhile I can buy a figure and play with it straight out of the box.
Things like Azones feel closer to the latter, which is why I'm drawn to them the most. I wish they did more collabs with anime and games to do specific characters.

Also, as an european, figures are not only cheaper but much easier to get a hold of. If I want a doll that's not listed in the few EU stores I have to go through a lot of hassle and extra charges just to bring her home.

>> No.45562193

I import everything. Even with ridiculous taxes the prices are still inferior than I see in domestic stores.
Another thing that annoys me is how they're doing this DLC model where parts are exclusive or you have to buy them seprately or you get parts for another figure in the same line. Really feels like getting milked endlessly. So many times I thought I just wanted a good body that I could put clothes on, but I'm not a fan of anime faces on larger dolls, I think they translate a lot better in small scale.
I'm still conflicted because I cannot commit to both at the same time, maybe I'll get a figure every now and then but the whole experience so far has been really offputting. I hope I won't get disappointed with a BJD, I love the idea of dressing her up. The one I'm getting also poses really well and can do things most action figures can't so (e.g. sit cross-legged)

huh that's interesting. I was certain that because of the strings, the parts in a resin doll would be much more hollow while vinyl would have more of a hefty, full feel
one thing I find really appealing in vinyl is that from what I've seen, they move pretty much like action figures. Resin dolls look harder to control unless - I assume - they're perfectly strung.

seconding this, though full disclosure i only have one resin doll for comparison. he is so much heavier than my other dolls that he is sitting on an upended brick in my display case until i can get a sturdier stand than the ones i’m used to using for my DDs. i’m still terrible at posing him (the limbs are much heavier than with vinyl), and the elastics still kind of scare me, so i might end up sticking with some kind of seated position thing that is less silly than a brick (though that does amuse me). i’m too much of a resin noob to know if he is strung either too tight or too lose. also sorry for the bad quality phone photo!

Vinyl is almost impossible to cast outside of a factory setting, unfortunately. Home-made silicone option parts (busts, torsos mostly) are available, but silicone has its own pros and cons and maintenance to consider, and none of that will account for the need to get a head and face-up done, or the custom outfit. Isn't Volks re-releasing Miku right now? The scalper prices on the aftermarket are bad, but the re-release is less of an investment comparatively.

It's hard but doable. rant inc

I am very far down the rabbit hole with 22 DDs, and have kept it a secret apart from a few friends for almost a decade. No matter how you spin it, society will judge you harshly. Being open and honest or "nonsuspicious" isn't going to change this. I'm not going to even try explaining my doll collection to my coworkers if I invite them over for dinner/game night, and ruin any chances of future promotions, recommendations, or referrals. Not to mention people get fired for far less these days like that twitch streamer teacher. Life as an adult is full of compromises and I'm not about to burn bridges to die on a proverbial doll hill. This is no different than not going to see R rated films with conservative family or friends.

I don't know your exact circumstances, but I'd truly weigh the pros and cons for both the present and future before "coming out of the closet" so to speak.

They just have a strong presence, you see their shoes in pictures and think "ah a little doll shoe" and then it takes up your whole palm when you hold it. That being said I hope you enjoy your girl when she gets to you, it'll probably be a long wait as all made to order dolls are but you're welcome to hang out here in the meantime.
>>45571986
It doesn't stop! But really you'll probably attain enough variety in your doll lineup that most new ones that tempt you will be similar enough to one you already have that you should start passing on them, if you're an impulse buyer. I have a very specific plan for what dolls I want to get and how I want them to look, so whenever a tempting doll goes up I compare to what I want, and if it doesn't fit, I'll have to pass. Also stop if you're having financial issues, your dolls would rather you eat than them have new clothes

I have also seen that other people are resorting to weird gizmos to move the eyes on Volks dolls, so I was wondering. I definitely want the eyes to be posable, it's one of my favorite things.
Actually if there's one and only one thing I'll miss about 1:12 is that they come with multiple faceplates so you can change their expression. Between that and moving eyes you can get a lot of range. No matter how pretty the face sculpt on a doll, if she's pouty she'll always be pouty, and so on.

Though now that I think about it, I don't know people aside from my parents and friends used to my oddities who wouldn't be weird about my collections if I showed it to them. It's really weird how owning cute things, caring for them and making/buying stuff for them to wear is somehow seen as perverted and sick if a man does it. Half the things people call me weird for resulted in developing practical skills, none of my guy friends know how to stitch a tear on the fly or braid hair for example aside from the one with a little sister.

Pretty much.

If I'm expecting company, I'll clean up and throw them all in my room, or even my walk-in closet, which has my safe and some other valuables anyways so it's a perfect camouflage. Having your own house to yourself definitely helps though.

I started out for a few years at my parent's place however, and that was interesting to hide. I'd use a backpack in a closet and managed to convince a close friend to sometimes store the then single doll. They mellowed out over the years, so they'd probably be ok with it now if I told them, but I still see no reason to. Let them enjoy their upcoming retirement etcetc.

Toy has very few actual users and the majority of its activity is from a couple spammers/bots. This means when you have a general it's because a handful of people are gathering around specific things which is why they tend to ignore or reject on-topic subjects all the time.

>How did you guys find your way into the hobby?
Got into /toy/ searching for a posable figure I could use for drawing, ended up collecting a few, got disappointed with quality and other stuff. I made a post about it ITT. Meanwhile I learned that BJDs existed from a DollChateau pic somewhere, grew more and more interested and lurked around BJD stuff a lot. When I finally got fed up with figures I went straight for the grail.

I mean they're not what you'd usually define as BJD, since that usually means a doll with internal strings in tension to hold the parts together, but I don't think the semantics are a big deal personally. They're closer to the fashion doll or MJD (mechanical jointed doll) label by definition though. It's interesting actually, Dollfie Dreams are often referred to as BJDS and included in BJD spaces despite having an internal plastic skeleton instead of being strung, because they're "grandfathered in" - the first generation of DDs were strung before they moved to the skeleton build. Because of this, most internal skeleton-based dolls like Azone/obitsu 40-50cm are also often lumped in with BJDs regardless of mechanism. Dolls with embedded joints like Pureneemo and Tinyfox often also end up in the BJD label, since it's not really that important (as they can share clothes with equivalent BJD sizes), but again, are more accurately called MJD.
>>45601115
your little nugget is so cute I love seeing her! I think rather than being too far in, her eye might be rotated a tiny bit upwards? If you press a bit on the top half of her eye, it might turn it down. IIRC the eyes in Sugarcups girls have a "bubble" on the front that seats neatly in the eyewell so it should fill out that space if it's rotated a little bit, hopefully

Not them but it depends on the wig and where you want the ponytail - a lot of wigs that are sold to be worn down won't have wefts sewn into the edge of the wig cap so if you're pulling it into a high ponytail it'll expose the wig cap in an unflattering way. Low ponytails should be safe since it's close to where the hair lays naturally. Either way as long as you're gentle and comb it it shouldn't destroy the wig - you'll just need to comb it out and restyle if you've moved it around a lot. Be careful with rubber bands, they can be grippier which can help holding but they get tangled easier too - slide them off with your fingers underneath to prevent them pulling hair out
