So... basically you think the Japanese are magic, and that high-grade steel is impossible to come by outside of... Japan. Right.

You have to understand that one of these swords is a thin, sharp piece of metal, and the other is a big, thick, not so sharp piece of metal. This is what happens when you hit them together. Think taking a scalpel to a cast iron pot. It doesn't cut. The scalpel bends. The scalpel and the katana do not whisk through the big pieces of metal like tiny lightsabers, leaving the inferior GAIGIN DEVICES perfectly still for a moment before they slowly slide apart diagonally and hit the ground.

These are chunks of metal we're talking about, they have real physical properties. It's not ***** wizardry.

European swords are sharp. I'm not sure who keeps instigating this myth that they're completely dull.

You have to understand the superiority of curved blade. There is a reasons europeans stopped making normal swords and switched to sabers. If that guy used his blade as you are supposed to use curved swords, and not hit like if he was holding a baseball bat, you would know what I mean.

And katana isn't the best blade in it's class because of superior design or such but because of the time and effort japanese sword makers put into making them. Best katana's are unmatched. Typical katana is just a two handed saber.

It's probably based on how they common-sensely would be less sharp because they're thicker (in the middle, between the two edges), so the angle of the two sides meeting at the edge would necessarily be larger. While it's sometimes the case, (you already know this) any well-kept sword is just as sharp as any other.

By that measure, the aztecs beat the nips 400 years earlier, as obsidian is the sharpest material on earth.

Of course, it's not like there's anything a Katana can cut that a European blade can't.

Katanas are good swords against unarmored foes
It really isn't a good weapon against unarmored foes and the techniques that the japanese came up with for striking the weak points of -inferior japanese armor- doesn't make up for the fact that their sword sucked so much that they had to resort to such techniques.
Then again their armor was just plain bad compared to western armor that more or less made one invincible.

And Tamahagane was really not that good, good metal don't need to be folded, and unnecessary folding can actually lower the quality so the fact that Tamahagane needed to be folded is actually enough proof of the fact that it was inferior.

This guy is quite funny and he brings up some good points

It's significantly more difficult than with a Katana. Thickness of the metal, and all that.

I believe spears were pretty much superior than katanas in actual combat.

Anyway, using a tool that was made for cutting fast(the katana) with that little technique and with only brute force is not really useful.

Bullshit again. Swords were never made to pierce armor in the first place. Spears and blunt weapons were used to fight armored foes. If you think you can pierce a good steel armor with a sword you are wrong.

Swords were mainly a side-arm, a secondary weapon so to say.
But it isn't bullshit, many swords were made with armor in mind and while it is true that swords in general truly sucks against armor it doesn't change that fact.

And what is up with western swords = thick?
Lots of western swords were really thin, that includes broad swords and longswords.

And straight swords are better at cleaving, impact and crushing bones thereof better against armored foes than curved blades that are good at absorbing blows and slicing flesh, the fact that all swords suck at armor still remains though but that doesn't mean that they made swords that should at least be able to give you a chance against an armored foe..
