I see two key issues with this image:
1) You have thousands upon thousands of competitors, who will happily provide the same or better quality for 1/4 or 1/8 of the price. You will have to convince the customer your work is worth paying such a surplus (and selling yourself might be tough for an average /jp/sie with no social skills). Unless you're targeting the "suspiciously wealthy furries" (and/or other fetishists) or are dealing with someone who knows only about you as a provider, I don't see a way of doing it without already being a renowned vendor.
2) This approach to shading implies an understanding of what you're doing at the penultimate shadow coloring step, otherwise you will end up with unrealistic (wildly colored, which might be your aim, but the following applies all the same) or dull shadows. Which renders the grayscale value map meaningless (aside from a superficial zero-saturation layer to check your contrast during finalization) once you gain enough experience to make it work.

>>45096396
Nice thicc, but you might wanna foreshorten the right forearm. Try bending your wrist this way and watch how far you can actually bend it. Then repeat it in front of a mirror in the same pose. While we're at it, lateral ankle rotation relative to the lower leg is very limited. Simply press your foot on the floor and see how far you can rotate the ankle without rotating the thigh and the knee. In this case, though, you only need to avoid defining the knee as facing the viewer.

This. These shadows are way too easy to do but they do look dull, that's why I prefer to do all the shading using handpicked colors.

You are extremely wrong on that first point
You are speaking from a theoretical standpoint whereas OP is speaking from experience. Experience and practice has more weight than theory, specially if theory is a made-up scenario such as the one you described

Is it still a worthless made-up theory when it's based on observing a fairly large sample over several years (maybe hundreds of creators) and intimate knowledge of a different but fundamentally similar freelancing market? Are you aware of survivor bias and other data analysis? Are the conditions of disproving the theory (the last sentence of that point) met?
I may be selling my work at 500–800% of the market average, but I have over a decade of experience combined with reviews under my belt, and only a handful of local customers can afford it, while non-local customers are understandably conservative in regard to payment terms. Being in OP's shoes, the moral/advice I derived from my own experience was that setting your own price demands reasonably higher than market average is a good idea solely for the sake of resisting the unstoppable price dumping (even if there is no noticeable impact on the trend), but do not expect the market to bend for you and make you proportionately richer. If I were in need of money that I didn't already have, I wouldn't be able to afford keeping my rates as high, so I would not advise someone else to do the same as me or promise a fortune, knowing that I'm closer to an outlier. While uniqueness plays a larger role in the art market, the renown caveat mostly takes care of it. Instead of misleading statements, I would say this if I were the OP: "Do not lowball if you want to get a combination of hourly rates and volume of work that you're happy with. Do not grow to expect it though."

Furthermore, social skills are far more important than artistic skill for gaining this renown, at every stage of an artist's development. An introverted autist such as a typical /jp/sie will have a much harder time selling his work at a high price than a smooth-talking normie. Case in point: $200 per full NON-CHIBI body with no BG is what I see in the comm sheets of guys with 70–100k followers ("high renown") on Twitter and is around the expected norm. A highly social normie with 13k followers ("moderate renown") charges $35 per a chibi like in the OP pic and $100 for a full realistic body. Therefore, I view selling a SFW chibi commission selling for $200 as a stroke of luck. Turning it into a promise would lead to broken hopes.

I'll be honest I suck dick at shading so having a clear set of instructions and an example of how it's supposed to look it's a good place for me to start instead of being stuck at "cel shaded solid gray multiply layer" forever. I don't think I'm gonna stop there. I would probably combine several tutorials of shading until I find what clicks for me, however I think it's a good resource for someone like me that knows jack shit about it but can get to the lineart step

I have never seen a platypus in real life. Does that stop me from identifying the creature in this picture as a platypus only because I've seen countless sources name it as such, including Google-sensei that provided me with this picture for the purpose of my favorite argument device? Do you know what data analysis is? Also, if I wished to check with a community of people that presumably are experts in the matter of Australian fauna, I would be reassured that it's indeed a platypus.

>> It's not like your work is particularly good either

The lighting is all sorts of fucked though
It's like you've combined the shadows of two angles together, instead of picking one and adding the shadow later around the bits that logically would be in shadow.

I'd say you were trying to go for a light somewhere in the top left corner, a little behind whoever that is, but left shadows along the top leftish edges of the subject, which obviously makes no sense.
Fix that and it'd be more or less fine, bar a little touch up on the lips' coloration.

Using real game frames would be ideal in theory, but the problem is annotating all the objects in them which would take ages to do manually. Normally for these kinds of datasets people hire a team to collect images and annotate them for you e.g. real-life road images. But it's unfeasible given my timeframe. The next best thing is synthetic data. I basically extracted all the sprites + masks, annotated them automatically, and stack them ontop of each other to create an arbitrary number of training frames. Generally the more you train on, the better. But due to hardware constraints (the lecturer is supposed to be able to run this) I have to limit how many to train. Resolution is the EoSD playing field (384 by 448 pixels)

This has already been done once before in this paper: "Towards an AI playing Touhou from pixels: a dataset for real-time semantic segmentation" which presents the same idea with the goal of training an AI to beat Touhou. However, they used background images which aren't in the games at all, and their models were shown to perform poorly at detecting clusters of bullets and when the background is messy. I improve on their data generation method with real backgrounds and danmaku clusters collected by modifying EoSD's files so that I can screenshot whatever I want straight from the game. The goal is train the same models with the enhanced dataset, hopefully fix those issues and improve the FPS of inference. And in the future potentially combine with reinforcement learning to train an AI that can beat Touhou from looking at pixels.

It's okay to start with the OP method as a way to learn lighting and values, but you have to approach it with that mindset: as a learning tool for building experience that you can draw from when you transition to better techniques. Otherwise if you stick with this method and get too comfy with it for too long it will become a crutch. If you want something as relatively easy like this with much better result, at least use gradient mapping.

It's an old method I used back when I first started learning how to color stuff. I didn't have a workflow for color so I looked up a tutorial for it on yt and one process that I really liked was Marc Brunet's. This is the video I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MndJKaMQACY

I was amazed at how cool the stuff I made was coming out (pic related) but soon enough the method showed its flaws and I was having a hard time figuring out how to get the color I wanted onto the canvas. I was spending more time messing around with layer settings and creating gradient maps instead of putting down brush strokes so I decided to change my ways. I dropped that method entirely and instead developed a new one that I picked up from studying and watching one of my favourite artists work. It's really intuitive and works wonders, too. I can make a tutorial for it if I have time tomorrow

Do you think I should drawing everything in a grid, put everything into boxes then draw inside them? It's a genuine question I genuinely don't know how to stop sucking at foreshortening.

Also when characters that are too different, drawing bodyparts that deviate from the norm gets considered a mistake. I gave her long legs since she's quite tall in canon, and I thought as I was drawing "no, her legs need to be longer". But is thinking like that a mistake on my part?

You should just look more at things that you want to draw
Drawing is half observation and half recalling what you saw. Just like how a writer can't write about things he doesn't know, a draftsman (the english language doesn't have a word for someone who draws. A drawer is a piece of furniture) can't draw things he has never seen

Sadly, Yuyuko doesn't exist. But the things that configure and make up what we understand as Yuyuko DO exist in our real world:
Yuyuko has a head -> heads exist in our world -> to draw Yuyuko's head, you need to know how to draw a real head. If you try to draw a head without knowing what a head looks like, you're not going to draw Yuyuko's head.
Yuyuko has hands -> hands exist in our world -> to draw Yuyuko's hands, you need to know how to draw a real hand. If you try to draw hands without knowing what a hand looks like, you're not going to draw Yuyuko's hands.
Yuyuko has legs -> legs exist in our world -> to draw Yuyuko's legs, you need to know how to draw a real pair of legs. If you try to draw legs without knowing what a pair of legs look like, you're not going to draw Yuyuko's legs.
So on and so forth

Take the time to look at how things look like in the real world and then apply that knowledge to your drawings. You never have to guess or imagine how something would look, all the information you need is right in front of your eyes. By the way, this isn't the ULTIMATE and FINAL way to learn how to draw, but drawing from life will set you on a better path than endlessly trying to draw Yuyuko from imagination

Hey, so I'm the one who complimented your lineart in the previous thread and also the one who drew Hina a bunch of times and most recently, the Tewi drawing. Studying technicals and form and all that jazz has NEVER helped me improve, it just doesn't work with my brain. I've never taken an art class or viewed an art tutorial, I don't even know what foreshortening means (I guess I should google it, nyoro~n). However, I agree with >>45249186. I think the best way to learn to draw is to simply draw from life. I ALWAYS draw from real human references, I don't use other drawings as references and I don't draw from my head when I'm doing a serious drawing. I look at models in various poses instead, swimsuit models are a favorite of mine since I can avoid the awkwardness of looking at naked people while studying how their muscles look, etc. I'm not the best person to give advice because honestly, my art is mediocre, and I am completely self-taught. However, I do love art and I put a lot of my time and energy into creation. All the painting masters of the past looked at real people to create their masterpieces. For example, take the masterpiece The Raft of the Medusa by Theodore Gericault. He borrowed cadavers from the morgue in order to create his masterpiece, he didn't paint "from his head" and neither did any of the other masters. Even if they could draw almost perfectly without a reference, in order to reach a place beyond perfection and continue improving, they always used human models. I've heard it's best to view someone in motion, like a standing model-- however, we don't have the luxury to hire models just to draw 2hu smut, so the next best thing would be to look at static images online instead. Besides swimsuit models, I also prefer using yoga models as references. Stock photo websites like Dreamstime have a lot of great photos to sift through for different pose ideas. Well, there's my two cents for what it's worth. I think your drawings are cute and visually appealing, you have tons of room for improvement BUT you get what makes a drawing interesting to look at (as I see the dumbdumbs on vhu reposting your art a lot!). With a few more years of daily practice, you will surely improve dramatically. Please never give up and continue drawing!

>I'll be honest I have no idea how to get better at drawing the human body in perspective
This is going to sound really silly, but to get better at drawing the body in perspective, you need to learn how to draw the body in perspective. That's it. You need to know how the human body looks in perspective, recognise how it looks like, have it make sense. Now there are different ways you can reach this, it depends on how you are as an artist, not all the methods will make sense to you, but that's okay. Most if not all of them will focus on understanding how objects look in perspective, and how you would translate those into paper. Just pick one that works. If it doesn't, try a new one.

Now personally I agree with >>45249040. That's the method that made the most sense to me too. Vilppu will teach you to think about things in terms of shapes. So you start out with basic shapes and forms, and learn how to translate complex shapes, like the human body, to those forms. Now, forms are easy. It's much easier to rotate and observe a box, skew it, give it perspective, than to do so with the human body. So you get used to skewing 1 box, then you move to 2 box stacked together, 3 box, 5 box, add a sphere here, a prism there, and you've now skewed a whole human body. Easy.

BUT that approach doesn't work for everyone, as evidenced by >>45249186 and >>45251467. And there's nothing wrong with that! Life drawing and observation is completely valid, the masters of old all worked with that, after all. It seems very simple, but if you observe a hand from the angle you want to draw, then draw what you see, then boom, you have a hand drawn in perspective! The paper isn't in 3D though, so learning things like ratio and proportion helps a lot here. You're not going to always have a 1:1 model of the subject+perspective combo you want, however. So stuff like poseable drawing mannequins, body part models, or even weeb figures if you collect them can really help with this. Even Clip Studio comes with a 3D poser, and there are other software for that nowadays.

With that said, life drawing just doesn't work for me. It's just something that's 100% impossible for me. I legitimately have autism (not just 4chan-brand autism, even though I have that, too), so I can't look at real humans for too long. At best I can look at cut-up images, but even that becomes revolting the more I start recognising those as humans. Faces are a nightmare. But that's a (Me) problem! You find a way that works for (You)!

>> No.45253394

>>45253230
Interesting, I'm also autistic (diagnosed asperger's) but I have no real issue looking at models for drawing purposes. I absolutely CANNOT look at real porn of any kind, though, it totally sickens me. So I have to make it up as I go along when I draw lewd stuff and do my best with SFW models combined with my imagination. I sometimes even get grossed out by the nasty 3DPD worship generals on /jp/, I scroll past them as quickly as possible. When I'm using real humans as drawing references, I basically look at them like I'd look at an animal in the zoo or something.

Hello. First of all I want to thank all of you since all your posts have a lot of thought and effort put into them. It's way more than what I expected.(the Kyouko post wasn't me, but I did think it was funny)

Sometimes I do draw a lot from reference and I do believe those drawings look way better, but sometimes I just wanna draw some nice 2hu titties after a hard day of work while having a beer and not think too much about it. My art quality varies a lot depending on that, but I don't think that's inherently a bad thing. It's just like driving in 2 different gears, and it's better than nothing and just mindlessly scrolling through content.

That being said, I want to draw the best possible 2hus I can, and I don't want to always wing it and deliver something mediocre, so I thought about everything you told me and I think I'm gonna start a regime of drawing from 3-4 complex poses per canvas. Then recall and draw from memory. Then look back at the reference, then go back to recalling, and so on. The repetition and comparison of information supposedly makes you way better at recalling stuff later. And that kind of basic shape training and more orthodox kind of learning I can leave it to when I have some free time at work (since I can't draw anime titties there).

It's a lot to think of, but I do think it's going to be very helpful down the road and more or less covers both drawing from reference and constructing with shapes. Once again, thanks a lot for your posts!

PD: please note that when I say "2hu titties" I am not being flat discriminatory. Some flatties like Suika, Flan, Eiki and Clownpiece are very charming and I do want to draw them a lot, however I think the phrase "2hu titties" best represents the feeling of what I want to draw

I think the colors are good. A bit glossy but I like it.
Some things I don't like are things that should be drawn better. For example the nails are super thin and small and since they are painted you are making people look at them. And some of the faces' features are slightly off place. Hands and faces are two of the most important and most expressive parts and also the hardest so it just needs more practice. Drawing more than 1 subject is hard and I think you did a good job making them proportional to each other

The rendering I like. I think you added the hair pin of the girl in the middle afterwards since it's not shaded like the hair but other than that it is a soulful drawing with a good amount of effort put into it, and you should be proud.

you play as a human self-insert guy. you move back to your hometown after leaving to pursue your career, and you visit your childhood friend. shes a fiore (plant girl), who teaches at the local university now

really, you moved away because even though youve always had feelings for her, you were afraid youd fuck it all up and hurt her somehow. shes delicate and graceful, and youre clumsy and have a hard time with words. but youve both missed each other so much though that you have a hard time staying out of each others way. through trial and error, you two get close again, and you finally confess and decide to settle down with her

...or, you keep her at arms length to protect her and pursue the games other girls. this is the song i want to use for the games op, its really cheesy

The main difference in quality is from time spent, simple as that. And if you really care about seeing behind the scenes, then yeah as the anon above guessed I often use Clip's 3D models for setting up compositions and lighting reference for convenience.

And here's a wip from halfway. The sketch was done over the model, second pass over the sketch with the 3d turned off. Quicker works that no one is paying me for I tend to skip the second pass and simply clean the first one a little before colours.

Yeah, that's a lot of words for something just called tracing... You will never improve doing stuff like that, and anyone with a trained eye can tell you're doing it. Your coomer commissioners won't care, but you are cheating yourself. Your other drawings are simply not very good. The hands, legs, and anatomy in general need a lot of work. You're decent at coloring, but coloring is meaningless if the lineart underneath is no good. You need to work out the composition of the pose yourself and not rely on tracing if you ever want to actually see marked improvement in your work. Also, if you are going to keep tracing, I would work on covering your tracks and NOT making it extremely obvious. It's not so much the quality difference as a total change in art style that makes it clear as day.
>>45311046
