Let's start this thread from opposite direction: what you should not to do to learn Japanese. Post what method/trick you've tried to learn Japanese and decided that it's waste of time and switched to something other to learn nihongo.

Maybe for languages that are very similar to English and thus easy to learn its mediocre but still, why bother.
