Quick question,

I know that smoking and possession of marijuana warrants abnormally harsh penalties in japan. But is it still common at all for people to do it? Like, if I go to japan, will I be able to find some dudes in a park lighting up or be able to talk about it openly at all without getting weird looks and stuff?

One of the best things about going to Japan is that you can spend the entire trip walking around town and never once be subjected to the vomit-inducing stench of pot.

Drug abuse is far lower in Japan than in the west. Whether you go by surveys (less than 1.5% of Japanese have tried pot) or arrests (3,793 in 2009, which was a new record) it's clear that marijuana is not easily available. The increase in marijuana use is largely blamed on contacts formed over the net, so I doubt you'll find dealers lurking in parks.

As mentioned, Japan in general has some of the more harsher penalties for marijuana offences across the board. As such, don't expect any Marley fests (I am now imagining touhou characters smoking joints and laying on the grass passed out) In general, abuse is more prominatly centered around synthetics, with precriptions being somewhat notorius. Not to say that there isn't any average drug use like every other country. Some Idol or Actor (Can't remember details derp.) in the past year was arrested on amphethimine possesion so it shows it exists if you know where to look.

The rest of what I know is hearsay (ripped from webehigh, go there and look up the city) but if you are balsy/insane enough, just smuggle the weed instead, roll a few spliffs, and enjoy.
