I think I can see it. Elf = fae in older (mostly pre-Tolkien) English and was a word meaning all kinds of weird supernatural creatures. Eldritch literally means of the elves, and that's one legacy of what elfish used to mean. Translator probably thought youkai was a good Japanese equivalent to fae and used elf in its OG meaning. Which is retarded and I hate it as much as both of you but I see the logic. I also don't think it's a literal translation, seems like a bad localisation attempt like those early FS fan translations that used ghosts for youkai.

Yeah okay, I learned Japanese, so I get that not everything 100% translates over and so some leeway is necessary and so forth, however, I don't think that therefore one must make everyone speak like some Californian and discuss only things that some Californian might understand at the lowest common denomination.
If the purpose of language is to impart an idea, then the purpose of translation is to capture that idea in a format which can be understood by the audience. Capturing the idea is key; changing the idea into some other similar concept is outside of the scope of the task at hand, regardless of how tempting this may be to some translator.

No, you're completely right. Thing is, as I understand it, once the idea migrates over to the Isles that word got all muddled up with the local beliefs in other kinds of fairies and supernatural creatures (which never had the kinds of hard boundaries contemporary people put them in) until elf became another generic supernatural creature until fairly recently when fantasy & pulp writers picked it up again, dusted off some of the Old Norse myths, and established it as what we're familiar with today. One hundred years ago, it'd be tolerably bad (very dated, and risking people reading Norse myth into it, but it would get some of the idea of unexplained supernatural creature). So I can see the logic if I squint.
