Is vocab study through Anki really the only practical way to learn vocab as an absolute beginner? I've tried it a few times but I always feel like as soon as I miss a day, I just stop because its not fun and its even more tedious to get caught up than it already was to keep up.
I've tried just reading manga and looking up unknown words, but my brain just kills itself after a few pages having looked up every word they said, so I can only assume this is a method best used AFTER one knows a decent amount of vocab.
How do you guys do it? Are there any alternative methods to vocab study that are more fun to go through as a beginner? To be clear, I'm not asking for some cheap cop-out method that claims to teach me five bajillion words in two microseconds, but just something that I can do that isn't so mind-numbingly boring and tedious as a beginner that doesn't have the vocab to just go read and look up unknown words. Or am I just being a little bitch and should just suck it up and slog through Anki vocab?

Should I consider a victory in Anki when I simply remember the meaning of the card or when I get the pronounciation right as well? I have a lot of trouble understanding how to use Anki as a learning tool so I need some input from other people understand more about how to use.

Nothing wrong with missing a day. Just have to play by your own rules.
Old cards tend to snowball out of control, meaning any time you press the "1 day" button, what it really means is "several months" or "panic attack next week" lol

What I do is, if I'm not 100% sure the word is in my long term memory, I demote it. Simple as. Never promote it past "1 day" unless you're sure.
Then when I'm sure it's engraved in my skull, yeet it into the "1 day" pile and it'll be no issue when you see it sometime next year.

if you can push through anki for a few more weeks, it will become a habit. it seems to already be close to a habit so that is good. make sure you never miss anki. if you need to take a break from new cards, decrease new cards to 1 per day. Don't decrease to 0 or you will get into the habit of not adding new cards. if you go all the way to 0, it is really easy to keep doing 0 cards per day for days that turn into weeks that turn into months. If you stay a minimum of 1, you can easily ramp it up from 1 a day to 2 to 3 to 5 to 10 a day over the course of a few days or weeks. 1 a day is practically insignificant but it keeps you physiologically in "learning" mode and not maintaining mode.
you are super early in anki so immersion is probably super painful which probably why you are avoiding doing it. try immersion after you've done more anki, but the earlier the better. it takes a couple months for a habit to form, so after anki becomes a habit, try to make immersion a habit too. either do immersion before or after immersion, but either way, do it the same way every time so that the habit forms easier.

The problem with the Japanese tv I've tried to watch, and I know perfectly well I haven't seen enough to generalise this for all of it, is that it feels like im watching tv. I want something where they're not sitting in a massive studio with several hosts and celebs I don't care about with a crowd watching. I wanted to learn Japanese to become more autistic so I could get away from those sorts of things, not so I could get into them.
