I was too busy double checking the work my crew chief had done in prepping my Fw-190A-8 for combat. Another of the massive American bomber raids was coming, and we got the order to scramble. As I strapped myself into the cockpit and gave a thumbs up and salute to my chief while waiting for my engine to warm up, I found myself dwelling in a feeling of despair. No matter how much we struggle, no matter how many we shoot down, they always have more. Their numbers are limitless. My desperate courage yesterday counts for nothing today. A sobering thought. Then I must be courageous every day.

My engine is warmed up and purring nicely as I sit idling on the runway behind my comrades. My ammunition counters show that my machine guns and cannons are fully loaded. The ground controller gives my staffel the all-clear to take off. My engine growls in pleasure as I unleash the thousands of horsepower under the hood. I look around me. Twelve Fw-190s scrambling to take on more than a thousand bombers and several hundred escorting Mustangs. It is suicide. I sigh and briefly close my eyes. If it is my day to die, then so be it. I won't run away from my duty. Not while these bombers carry hundreds of thousands of pounds of death for my people, and the innocent civilians on the ground look up into the sky at me with hope in their eyes. No, I cannot back down. Even if I die.
