I don't know whether Yukari is good or evil. I'd have to meet her in real life to learn more.
I don't really have much against feeding humans to Youkai. They need to eat, and its not too different from us cultivating cows and chickens. There's plenty of normal animals that exist at this moment that can and have eaten humans before. Preferably they'd be abducting serial killers and rapists, of which there is no shortage of. Even if they just abducted random prisoners from the US alone they'd effectively have an infinite supply of food.

Youkai are sentient, and although they aren't human they do express complex emotions. Differences should be appreciated rather than divisive.

>> No.44080143

>>44080033
I somewhat disagree, Youkai are basically sapient parasitic egregores made by the falsehoods of man and were possibly manufactured by the lunarians to keep humanity in a state of fear, they are little more than animals with barely any civility, they can't produce anything on their own without stealing it from humans in someway.

I really wouldn't be much better than them if I collapsed Gensokyo and murdered everyone, humans and "gods" included.
Its not surprising that they've adapted much from humanity considering that its humans which brought them into existence in the first place. Calling them nothing more than thiefs is wrong since intelligent, creative youkai do exist. Youkai transmutation does exist, meaning that its possible for them to exist aside from fear, and its debatable whether they even actually need fear and/or human consumption in the first place to exist.

They would be very willing, though they'd need to play their cards correctly. The US is already in possession of ridiculously advanced technology that other countries want, so maintaining secrecy and security isn't anything new. Rather than direct intervention, the discovery of Gensokyo would inspire them to spend more money and research on psychic powers and the supernatural.
I can't see the elixir of immortality being very enticing. Its something that's only immediately beneficial to individuals, and it doesn't offer enhanced strength or durability (only regeneration), though this wouldn't be immediately apparent. Yukari's teleportation ability is a thousand times more useful.

And that's the point I'm making, if Gensokyo were to rally under a single banner and fight off the invasion, they would win, but that just isn't happening.
Countless times the safety of their land was in peril and they all just laid back and left someone else to handle the issue, so they'd do that here as well until it's too late.

There is also the implication with the Ghostly Field Club lore that humanity of the not so far future is becoming... bored? of the increasingly scientific, secular world post-youkai to the point of actively introducing delusion into society.

I think ZUN's implication is that Humanity is unwittingly making a void in purpose for either youkai to reclaim their space in the larger world, or for something else to fill that vacuum.

Maybe, maybe not. As I said, it wouldn't be a blitzkrieg for USA to just go Japan and put all of its military there: Russia and China wouldn't allow that, causing things to go very slow. Maybe it wouldn't be too late for them to reunite under a single banner.

Watch your tongue with me. The anon I was discussing with said that Byaukuren was a physical threat because of her specialization on enhancing magic, when this is far from the case: a mage is as dangerous as they are old, and Byakuren having a whooping millenia and a century under her belt implies that she's way more powerful than she lets on.

I said she was a physical threat based on what we see in canon. We can, of course, assume the millennia old witch to be able to cast teraflare and destroy the US, or we can just as easily say she forgot how to use her more powerful magic during the years impriosioned in Makai.
If we do this, then we also need to extrapolate every other 2hu's abilities to their absolute highest; Yamame unleashes an illness and wipes out half the humans; Koishi mindbreaks entire armies and so on.
I just think that kind of discussion is not very fructiferous, aside from feeling very non-2hu esque.

She didn't remain asleep or something like that, in fact, she made her signature "sorcerer's sutra scroll" while there. Its also implied that not only she met Shinki there, but she may have taken her as a pupil as well, and what little we know about Shinki is that she's a God, with a capital G.

You are correct, I had forgotten about that. I concede.

I don't really know how powerful an endgame mage would look in Touhou, but Akyuu mentions that mages can beat any youkai, provided they have enough magical power (and are wary of surprise attacks) so we can make the guess that they can be insanely powerful.
>Enough to pose a serious threat to the US army?
Who knows? Like an anon mentioned here before, maybe they could do some ritual that kills a president, a general, or something like that alas Death Note, essentialy destroying the opposition from above to bottom.
>What's the biggest feat of magic we've seen?
Not really a magician's feat, but Shinki creating the entirety of Makai and its inhabitants comes to mind. Thats some magic right there.
Aside from that, the four magicians that we all know and love don't really show off that much, aside from Marisa's master spark.

This point I feel isn't very good. You kill one general, there's gonna be 50 other men to replace him, eventually the US would censor their names, or spread false information to prevent further incident. And killing the president like that would be a death sentence for the 2hus, in the real world of there were a war against Gensokyo, it wouldn't be total war, all the other powers would prevent that, but the second the freaking president of the USA falls down due to magic, no more half measures. I'm talking full support from all the nations and - more crucial - the public. Even you would be for the extermination of a place with people who can point their fingers and you'd be gone.
I could see Yukari preventing magicians from killing someone like that for that very reason.

Yeah, you are totally right. I thought of that right after making that post. There would also be the problem of martyrs, basically the case of a chicken without a head: no leaders, but many fanatics going all in.
>This point I feel isn't very good.
It was an example from an anon above, but I don't know the full capabilites of an accomplished mage in Touhou to fully answer that. Maybe mind controlling important politicians? Trapping soldiers in illusions? Who knows, I like to think that touhou mages aren't that different to pathfinder's or the elder scrolls ones, so there's that.
>I could see Yukari preventing magicians from killing someone like that for that very reason
Totally.

Also I remembered that Byaukuren managed to escape from Reimu's fantasy seal with enhanced speed, thats quite the feat too.

There is also the side of intelligence we have to consider. Just how smart is Byakuren? Could she avoid assassination via, say, poison? I could see someone like Miko being at least somewhat aware of the possible ways they might get her, but the nun I'm not so sure.
And talking about intelligence, just how bad would it be if the US got a hold of the Chronicles? Just a handy book explaining any relevant Yokai's strengths.

She must be super smart. Her experience, age, and her skills as a magician leave no doubt for that. Poison isn't just going to get her in.
>And talking about intelligence, just how bad would it be if the US got a hold of the Chronicles?
It wouldn't be good for Gensokyo and will surely reduce their chances of winning quite a bit, but it may lead to youkai uniting faster when they realise that Joe Biden now knows their strenghts and their weaknesses, so kind of a double edged word.
Would Akyuu willingly give her memoirs to a man in black? She's not that fond of youkai, after all...

I will fight you on this. Byakuren spent most of her long life trapped in Makai, she had no way of gaining any wisdom, and she got out to Gensokyo, a land in the past. Also before she had no training in matters of war, and it was not like today where anyone knows all the hijinks the gov bodies can get up to, in ancient Japan she would've learned about farming or stitching and magic on her own but little else. All it takes is the CIA dressing an asian like a peasant to get close to Byakuren and poison her with the tip of an umbrella; the only one of her group who could help her with this is Mamizou, as she is from the outside and probably knows all about cold war era bullshit.
I'd hazard a guess that everyone in this board with modern education is smarter than Byakuren at least.

I doubt that Shinki would allow her to remain unwise. Besides, she has been studying magic and buddhism for all of her existence, her mind must be top notch at this point.
>and it was not like today where anyone knows all the hijinks the gov bodies can get up to
There are many outsider books in Gensokyo (how they get them is a different matter) detailing about modern goverments. Byakuren could make an educated guess if she's as curious as the rest of mages, as she probably is
>All it takes is the CIA dressing an asian like a peasant to get close to Byakuren and poison her with the tip of an umbrella

Making a lot of assumptions now. I can concede the point that her magic grew during her time at Makai, but Shinki just straight up taking care of her and teaching her various stuff? I find it unlikely.
>Besides, she has been studying magic and buddhism for all of her existence, her mind must be top notch at this point.
On those subjects yes, but that won't do her any good in a modern war setting. Studying all your life does not make you cunning nor wise.
>We are talking about a magical woman that lives in a world where invisible evil spirits can suddenly snap your neck for giggles.
Gensokyo is a whimsical land, yes it CAN happen, but the logic of the series won't allow it. And in canon, a neck snapping Yokai would be an incident, something for Reimu to resolve. In Gensokyo she wouldn't have to worry about dying suddenly and she knows it. Saying otherwise would be, again, making lots of assumptions.
>Preposterous. "The devil knows more by old than by devil", as the saying goes.
If I trap someone for a thousand years in a box they wouldn't be wise, and if I do so while giving them books on math they'll be the best mathematicians in the word but still be unwise. The age=wisdom thing works only with characters who actually lived their long lives.

Its very implied she met her, and had a good relationship with her (Byaukuren is also the only one right now in Gwnsokyo that can go to Makai uninvited), the possibility of them having been mento and pupil are pretty high, and I doubt Shinki would let her apprentice not gain some wisdom.
>but that won't do her any good in a modern war setting
Maybe not.
>Studying all your life does not make you cunning nor wise.
I agree, that is what age does, and she has been living for millenia.
>In Gensokyo she wouldn't have to worry about dying suddenly and she knows it.
As pretty it can be, its a dangerous land. Everyone is pretty much at risk there.

This thread calls for assumptions of any type. We both have been assuming for three days now.
>The age=wisdom thing works only with characters who actually lived their long lives.
I repeat my statement from before: she wasn't asleep in Makai, and we also have to account that she was quite active for a long time before getting sealed in Makai.

This I don't argue, however there is a big difference between the safe assumption that her magical knowledge grew during that time, another is her "life" knowledge.
>I agree, that is what age does, and she has been living for millenia.
You are confusing age with experience. In a war setting a 60 year old man from the first world would have way less wisdom than a 30 year old from a war torn country. Byakuren living a thousand years in Makai is not the same as say Tewi living a thousand years free, experiencing first hand shit like wars and seeing the industrial revolution(and its consequences). Would Byakuren even know about nukes and stuff? Or Cyanide?
>This thread calls for assumptions of any type.
Again, big difference between safe assumptions and others.

Perhaps a middle ground for me and you would suit this? While you are right that Byakuren won't have any modern warfare knowledge, and that her... "formal" education might be lacking compared to the average anon of /jp/, for the former I can see her catching up quickly, especially with help from other 2hus such as, as you said, Tewi and Mamizou, and for the latter, well, just because she may lack knowledge of certain areas that are easily findable for us, I still bet she's way smarter than an anon here, being a magician requires a lot of intelligence to grasp their sorceries.
>She was active during ancient Japan
Agree, and it adds to her experience, not in a modern way, of course, but humans haven't really changed that much on a general level, I think.
>>Jesus, you are right... and how have you been these days anon? I've been fine, ate good.

Yeah, a compromise would be the best as I don't see us reaching an agreement any time soon.
Byakuren would be disposed of if caught at the beginning while the fog of war and such are at play, but in open war she'd catch on the rules and evade schemes. I'm sure we can still agree her kindness would be her folly, but I digress.
I'd say we move on to another group.
How does Eientei fare? Someone brought up before how they don't seem loyal to Gensokyo and I find that situation interesting.
Would Eirin fight alongside Gensokyo or choose to let her safe haven fall?
And for that matter, how loyal would Tewi be in this situation?

Eirin did betray Gensokyo when the whole lunar invasion happened, but this is Lunar Capital we are talking about. She also especifically made a deal with Tewi for her to protect Eintei from humans, so maybe she won't find joining the outside attractive...
>how loyal would Tewi be in this situation?
Tewi did wanted to sell out her species to humans to avoid dealing with youkai, ans if we add that she's a loose cannon, she will probably join the outsiders on a heartbeat.

It'd take years for modern science to catch up. History books might have to be rewritten to account for supernatural intervention You'd have monsters and other phenomena popping up like weeds because people know they exist now. They'd be propaganda wars between institutions trying to deny beings out of existence and beings making their existence known. Actual cults forming around gods or powerful youkai. At least that's my opinion of the matter.
