i'm trying to dig up a 3d animated japanese "horror" video that was on youtube.
the concept was something like a guy gives you a box that gives you a billion but you also have to spend a billion years completely alone in a pocket dimension. after the million years are over, you return to your time a second later and you forget the million years. and the video is mostly about the years spent in the pocket dimension.

Episode 1 was very fun, it's clearly a very Miike drama with his distinctive style despite some of the Japanese detective dramas' troupes and cliches. There's a potential that it won't be completely riddled with them thanks to the nature of the story. Miike said on yesterday's interview that this drama will push the boundaries of terrestrial tv, but honestly, I don't know to what extent. Still, the story is absorbing so far and you can clearly sense Miike's aggressive approach to its development. It's Friday late-night drama but has a budget as high as a regular drama, and everyone working on it seems to be very enthusiastic about it. I recommend it.

The Yakuza live-action adaptation by Miike, but the actors are nothing like the Yakuza characters so if you're not a Miike fan, you'll hate it.
There's also a drama based on the Yakuza spin-off PSP game Kurohyo Ryu ga Gotoku Shinsho.
The Yakuza games are known for their dramatic twists and swerves, I don't think the early Kitano's works like Sonatine are similar, but his Outrage Trilogy is definitely similar to the Yakuza games so watch it. Also, check out Miike's v-cinema yakuza films. They're not always similar to the Yakuza games but some are for sure.

Finally got around to watching Red Post on Escher Street. It's so fucking good. One of Sono's best for sure. Actress who played Katako was really pretty too, shame that's the only movie she starred in. Will we ever see another kino by him after what happened?

Glad to see someone who appreciates this film, it was great, as expected from him. What I love about it is how Sono brought his auteur touch to a multi-narrative story of a cult director trying to make a film and everyone involved in it trying to be true to themselves. We rarely see such a tribute to extras and with full-blown infectious energy and passion. His personal life aside, his claim that his intentions for the film weren't to make something for theatres, but to make something to support his students and their future careers was genuine, it was apparent throughout every second of its running time. Re-watching it for the second time, it really comes together extremely well. My favorite part was the way its final scene on the streets contrasts the metacinema scene from his 90s film 'Bad Film'. You just know that particular part of 'Bad Film' is something he holds dear because the final scene of 'Why Don't You Play in Hell?' was also inspired by it.

I hope so. He just needs to stay true to his roots and make more indie films like 'Red Post'. It could perhaps be the fact that you're unconsciously biased towards a certain genre. Both 'License to Live' and 'Bright Future' are pure human dramas, they're different from 'Cure'. I think all of them are kinos though. 'Cure' though, I'm definitely biased towards it because it's a genre I love so much. Kurosawa’s terrifying, borderline nihilistic critique of society, seen through a focus on the unknowable nature of evil, and perhaps more frighteningly, the banal evil that can lurk within everyday people. It's everything I wanted in a psychological-thriller film and Kurosawa couldn't have made it better than that even if he tried to, it was perfect. Pure fucking timeless masterpiece.

And Penance is really good. Of course, since it's a WOWOW drama, Kurosawa had more freedom writing it without answering to someone breathing down his neck. The actors are all phenomenal and the nature of the story suits each and every one of them in their respective episodes. Episode 1, 3 and the finale are some of Kurosawa's best creations imho. I wonder how far he'd have gone if these tales were aimed at the silver screen instead.

While Kurosawa's directing was as good as ever, his writing took a nosedive in the 2010s. There were still some good ones like 'Before We Vanish' and 'To the Ends of the Earth', but many others like 'Real' and 'Creepy' weren't good.

'Creepy' was a big disappointment for me. I remember when I first watched it, I told myself that maybe Kurosawa is finally going back to his nihilistic origins and making something as good as 'Cure', 'Charisma' and 'Pulse' but I still had my doubts as the entire cast was made of mainstream actors who are stable in popular tv dramas which means it was made with the mainstream audience in his mind. My doubts were confirmed as it felt so toothless for a psychological-thriller film. It was so tame and shallow, as if I was watching a tv drama. It's like he was afraid to go the extra mile to make it really "creepy". As if he was afraid of making it controversial. When I say it felt like it was a tv drama, that's because it was indeed shackled by the same restrictions of those suspense tv dramas we see every season. I was overwhelmed with a sense of dissatisfaction when I finished, it felt like something was really missing.

It's definitely nothing like 'Cure' and 'Retribution'. I'd say, it's something between 'Bright Future' and 'Creepy' but not quite so. It's just as you said though, it's something in the middle. There's human drama in there, there's mystery in there, there's romance in there, there's SoL in there, there's a crime in there, and there's a bit of psychological themes, and that's all due to the nature of the story. It concerns a group of people who led different lives after being affected by a certain incident in the past so each episode is different.

I think you should watch 'Barren Illusion' if you haven't yet. It's a mix of many elements from the works that preceded it. It has the experimentality of 'Bumpkin Soup', the nihilism of 'Cure', the human drama and existentialism of 'License to Live' and the surrealism of 'Charisma'. You'll either love it or hate it, but the experience will be worth it. I also recommend watching his latest work 'For 13 Days, I Believed Him' (2022), one of his best modern works imho. Many anons here loved it too.

The whole thing was dumb as shit, from the concept, to the execution. Laughed when the police guy manages to aim for once in the middle of the night and shoot out a tire, but earlier his whole squad painted the back of the same van with bullets and not one of them managed to hit a tire because "plot".

I thought it was gonna be similar to Hanzawa Naoki, with very serious tones and dialogues, I think they even brought the female narrator of Hanzawa Naoki at the start, but it had lots of goofy scenes and it made me a bit disappointed.
