I don't get it. First of all, kitsune have no conventionally limited lifespan. Moreover, if Ran aged over 900, she would grow more tails than there are present.

Most egregiously, "Ran" is only the shikigami inhabiting the kitsune body. If the kitsune somehow, someway aged beyond functionality, the shikigami could have been simply moved to another body.

I don't think there are any sources that say, show, or imply shikigami can just move bodies. They can be dispelled and reapplied but that's not the same as a transfer.

To clarify the strawman was me assuming your point was Ran couldn't come to love Chen because she was a shikigami.
I'll admit shikigami confuse me. Chen's PCB profile states there is no difference between the shikigami and the bakeneko but SCoOW states the fox and the shikigami are two distinct beings and the fox simply never surfaces. It seems contradictory to me.
