Hey /jp/

How long did it take you to beat your first Touhou? I'm new to the whole danmaku genre, and figured I'd start with IN since it's supposed to be the easiest Touhou, but it's kicking my ass. I've been trying to 1cc normal for about 2 weeks now, and I've hit a wall at stage 5. I can usually get through the first 4 stages with only 1 death, but this fucking bunny wrecks my shit every time.

Should I just give up, or is it normal to take this long for someone who's not used to bullet hells?

So it is actually possible to get better at GRAZEGRAZEGRAZEOMGINSANEBULLETDODGAN with time? From /jp/ I get the impression it might take a year beating your first Touhou game on Normal but after that any next one is trivial, just takes a bit of memorization and adapting to new spellcards?

My introductory game is - brace for fail - SA.

I haven't been able to do with Reimu what I do with Yuyuko - stand almost still at the low edge center of the screen and just watch everything die, only taking babysteps to dodge whatever few bullets come my way. It's shit for scoring, but people who have played these games for less than a year don't play for score, they play for survival.

It took me a few months. I managed to 1cc Lunatic in a couple games within a year, but it gets really hectic after that.

It took me about 1 month to 1cc IN easy, and 2 months to 1cc IN normal. I haven't done it twice yet, only once. 1cc'ing easy is downright trivial now. My playtime was almost exactly 24 hours until my normal 1cc.

I watched a touhou tutorial for IN on youtube. It shows lots of good bombing points. I had a hard time getting past one or two levels on easy when I got started.

How long do you play each day? For my 1cc on normal, I spent an hour a day during the week, and then 6-8 on a saturday, and then about 3 hours on sunday finishing with my 1cc. You have to get in the zone.

The other games can require different things of you. For example PCB is just packed with bullets that don't move in a straight line. EoSD has a lot of random spammy spellcards + no hitbox (which can trip up people new to shmups). IN is like slow bullets occupying every millimeter of space on the screen. IN is still easy to beat, but the point is they can feel unusually hard if you're not good at certain things.

>> No.4288617

Not >>4288510, but as an example, I'm more comfortable with IN, but I just played 3 practice rounds of SA level #1. I haven't made it through without dying yet. I'll keep going until I can go through level #1 without dying twice, then play a game. And so on and so on.

As someone who did just this, I have to advise against it unless you really must beat the games quickly. You can get pretty burnt out of the games like this. Playing just a bit every day makes it feel a lot more fresh and I find that I always do my best on my first real attempt. And if you need variety, it doesn't hurt to jump between games. You're still getting the basic skills you need that way.

Although I guess you should practice a lot until you have the basic shmup skills down. After that, though, try not to let yourself get sick of the games.

UFO on normal

I think it took me about 3 days to beat it, a month at least to 1cc it.

I turned around and 1cc'd PCB with Sakuya the first day I fired it up. IN took a couple days. I should get around to EoSD but when I got to stage 6 I got my ass beat despite having 3 lives. I immediately went to practice the stage and got through it without dying once.

SA is ridiculous. I've beaten it but the time it would take to memorize and 1cc it is too much for me to care doing.

I tried MoF one day but that stupid crow bitch killed me. I haven't touched it since.

Watching videos help when you have no damn idea how to get through an attack effectively.

It goes without saying that I was playing on normal. There's no way in hell I'd be able to beat UFO on hard as my first.

By the way, best touhou is pic related.

Kefit's unfocused lunatic EoSD run with commentary. Also don't be fooled by the sixth video. If you continue you see he actually got past the sixth stage in the video that says ending and credits. He also does the extra unfocused.

Kefit generally goes for stunt runs involving perfect lunatic and extra stages, no bomb lunatic runs, and I think this was his only non-focused lunatic. You can really learn something from them. You can see some replays of his with annotations on his youtube account. His replays have been quite helpful for me.

I started playing before mof was out, but I played on and off, and never really focused on any one of the games, choosing randomly which one to play at any one time, or maybe even playing a game of each per session.

Beat IN at the start of last year, beat mof around mid-2009, beat pcb and eosd around the end of 2009, and beat sa and ufo in the same week last month.

Just take it easy, you'll eventually get there.

Part of it depends on how much you really wanna grind. I just take it easy, usually making one run a month at most Toohooan games. Never easy (Except for UFO. Fucking UFO), always normal. I just have fun even if I don't make the end. Between Touhou Endings wiki and everything else I don't feel like I miss much.

I do shy away from post MoF games though if only to avoid the shitty continue system.

EoSD : stage 1-5 Easy
PCB: Can't clear.
IN: Easy
MoF: Normal (the whole game to me is just ripping through everyone then bombing the shit out of Kanako)
SA: Easy
UFO: Easy
