I will use the not gameplay thread for actual gameplay, because there's nowhere else (reasonable) to talk about it.

I started playing toohoo for the first time a few days ago and 1cc'd EoSD on normal but extra kicked the shit out of me. Dunno if I should try and throw myself at it, a hard 1cc honestly seems more within reach. It's either that or I just move on to PCB, even normal EoSD has some cards which I just do not understand how to capture consistently because they seem very random, and supposedly 7/8 are less rough around the edges in terms of design.
Maybe I'm just shit though.

Anon I used 15 bombs, the difference between a no bomb normal 1cc and a 15 bomb normal 1cc is quite a lot.
Every stage after Cirno has some random attacks which can give really bad patterns on all difficulties, green books and Sakuya's green knifes come to mind. If you take my numbers literally and assume I would've died at every bomb I'd have died 23 times compared to the 10 lives or so total you end up having naturally on normal.
Obviously it was my first completed full game run, and some of those bombs were done out of being overly cautious, but doing a NB 1cc would still require basically playing doubly as accurate. The weird rank system also theoretically comes into play where the less you die and bomb the more projectiles there are. So don't sell yourself too short.

I used to go to /v/hu threads last year when there was still a decent amount of gameplay discussion. Nowadays I go check threads every once in a while and regret it every time. ZUN really needs to release 19 so there's something to stimulate discussion.

>For the good ending, beat Kaguya (6b). You're not allowed to continue on the stage.
>For the normal ending, bear Eirin (6a), with or without continues.
>For the bad ending, run out of time.
Generally you don't need to worry about hitting the time thresholds. You'll reach the end before you run out of time on every 1cc run.

Though there have been changes in the dialog gamefiles on github since that version, for example:

Looks like they are trying to make the dialog more interesting, they are also adding Yumemi as an extra boss. However it's been almost 2 years and they haven't released these changes, so i don't expect them soon.

Play defensively. The AI will only choose to die after hitting a particular time, ~2:30-3+ minutes for later rounds, so launching attacks is a wasted effort. Exception to this is Round 1 Shiki who can theoretically go forever, if you go into Shiki with no extra lives and no hope of an extend just restart, you have to pay the toll. Save your meter for either level 2 attacks, exclusively to clear space on your screen, or level 4 to boss flip. Level 3 isn't worth the extra meter burnt. Before launching a manual boss attack, check the AI meter/combo to ensure you dont get instantly boss flipped for your efforts. Never bomb except for truly dire final hail marys, you're beyond fucked with zero meter. Best place to sit is below midscreen (except against Komachi, hug the bottom) since it gives you the most options to dodge and a level 2 at close to midscreen clears a large portion of projectiles. That basic knowledge should be enough to get at least a normal 1cc with some practice.

Need help for aocf Ichirin/Tofu route. I accepted that I never gonna be good at soku to even 1CC normal so I just wanna clear those story modes for story and ost sake. However this route is too hard for me. Their projectile range is too short for me to cheese unlike Marisa/Koosh. Doremi part is ridiculous but doable. But I can't get past Miko/Hijiri's second card, I just get bodied every time.

Naruhodo. I never considered that aspect too much.
I go with Marisa most of the times cause she "feels" best, her lv2 spell is very powerful(I think the one with most DPS?) and her activation area is very functional.
I just try to bruteforce everything cause it's fun to try to dodge barrages of mirrored bullets or try to use a spell at the last moment, it's not a very effective strategy though, it's not even a strategy actually, I'm pretty bad at it compared to other touhous. I've only cleared lunatic once cause I've got lucky with Eiki, and like more than 90% of my time on th09 has been spend on 1v1 matches against the AI just to kill time and practice random dodging.

Depends on the game, but technically it's always wrong even if the run is practically doomed given the circumstances & what that lost life implies. At least you're maybe learning a thing or two about the later stages rather than spend 10 minutes for a hazardous shot at getting it right.

Depends on your game plan, really. If you want to perfect the first 3 stages, then feel free to reset. But if you're just going for the 1cc it usually doesn't matter. I've had runs where I got the 1cc even with mistakes on stage 2/3, but also had runs where I die to the final boss's last card and realize that a stupid mistake in the early stages caused me to not have the resources to finish the clear.

Touhou games are such that if your performance on stage 4-6 is solid enough, you're more than capable of covering for early mistakes. I think the only game I actually resetted for good early stages was UFO, since that game is very punishing and having a good resource buffer early on can make a world of difference.

>> No.42826046

If you're just practicing, then you shouldn't reset but instead power on just to learn more. If you're making genuine 1cc attempts, you should probably still at least try to keep going. I usually only pack it in if I fumble hard on stage 4 as well as a 3 miss.

I changed my mind about posting my review when 4chan died yesterday.

But for you, here's a modified short version:

First, yes, I've played some mainstream fighting games. You should at least first try to beat Street Fighter II World Warrior Arcade version, because that's kind of the standard fighting game.

You only need to 1cc up to Yukari, you can "Continue" when fighting Suika (she's treated as a bonus character), and you'll still get the good ending.

I've used three characters; Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya.

Marisa is OP. Just use her if you're still having trouble beating the game. Her witch broom ramming move counters most spell cards. And her kamehame wave super just destroys. It's like playing in easy mode.

Sakuya plays like a zoner (I think that's what the kids calls it) she puts slow knives on the screen to limit the opponents options, her multiple knives slash super is not that good. I think she's a good choice when fighting real people to mess with their heads, but not against the CPU.

I main reimu because her heavy hadouken is really effective and I like playing as a shoto. And her energy ball super is really satisfying to use and not too OP.

I see, thanks for the tips. I've never played fighting games beyond sporadic casual play with friends so I'll give SFII a try.

Marisa plays like a rush down character btw. You want to use your Shoryuken all the time, then broomstick ram if your opponent tries to runs away; since she doesn't really have a projectile special move; that bomb move is more like a zoning move to force your opponent out of the corners than a projectile move.

It really feels like 50% of MoF is just building up resources for Kanako's final and the other 50% is actually clearing the spell.

I've beaten 6 and 7 without autobombs. It's a good way to sample the games. I can beat them later if I feel like it.

Looks decently accurate to me as far as spells go. Most of these are LNN run killers. Some of them like GT or HGS aren't ones most people usually think about, but are inconsistent as fuck.

If it was up to date and included everything, then books, PCB s6 fairy spam, UM s4 and so on would probably be on there. Is there a better list?

lol, no. HBCB and HPSI should be at the very top, PDH doesn't even come close. Requiem is somewhat understandable if you're using SakuyaB but it's still way too high.
There's some weird stuff on that list like RW and Lilies which shouldn't even be on there. Most things should be a bit lowered like CW, GT, and PWG (PWG is fine if you're using Marisa though). There's also MCT which the difficulty can be piss easy or bullshit depending on your shot

If your biggest problem is mostly just ordering, it's not that big of a deal lol. The placements are off by a few votes and I think they were judging difficulty respective to the individual game, and games like IN, SA, and TD overall just aren't as hard as the rest. RW is the very last attack in the longest run and is pure RNG, and the RNG bullets at the end of a wave in Lilies can almost wall you. DBDB is the most dubious choice there imo.

>What the fuck do you mean?? They get mentioned all the time by survival players

For MoF, ReimuA is probably simplest for initial clears. I've noticed enemies in 10 generally have low hp so the homing shot makes quick work of them. ReimuB is a decent alternative since it's just needle Reimu.

For SA it's a bit more tricky since the shot types are more experimental. ReimuA is closest to the usual needle Reimu so it wouldn't feel too weird to use. ReimuC has a very gimmicky shot but also the best bomb in the game, which allows you to cheese a lot of the run.

I've found it to be the most efficient in terms of clock, yeah. For some reason, dosbox-x and np21/w both run MS Extra with high slowdown when a lot of bullets are on screen, despite only taking 15% CPU usage and not even filling up a whole core.
Meanwhile, anex86 runs it without skipping a beat. I just wish it didn't display V and W characters as く, does someone know a fix for that?
I think I'll include anex86 in the next version of the touhou98 experience pack.
