I feel like I may just be retarded but I genuinely struggle more against normal Marionette than lunatic Killing Doll. It feels like the normal version is way more likely to spawn knives off bounds that kill me from the back or from either side if I'm close to the walls. Even if KD is way denser I hardly ever have that issue so it's somehow more consistent for me.
Does anyone else get that impression too or am I just a dumbass?

This is an odd question, but does anybody else have any sort of tips on having better discipline? I really enjoy playing the mainline games and can usually do okay on hard, but once I hit a wall I end up watching videos for strategies or just practicing a bunch and inevitably get distracted. Should I maybe try normal first and go from there? I'm not particularly concerned with getting a 1cc at the moment, and just having played the game somewhat decently is enough for me.

For me I just grind normal and go bottom up however it may work for you if you play lunatic or hard a lot then go down a difficulty level. Also when I get stuck I watch a playthrough and even if I don't study the moves it helps mentally knowing that others can get through said sections im having problems on and i usually can breeze through said section after

I get where you're coming from. I lost interest in lewd 2hu the more I got into the games. For some, that sense of familiarity makes the heart+dick grow fonder. I was struggling with Touhou 18 Lunatic and Extra for an entire month and then today all of the sudden I cleared both Lunatic and Extra in 2 games, feels good.
I think what got my survivability improved(other than the practice ofc) was Koishi's Pebble Hat, halving the power you lose when you die is so useful in this game. So thanks Koishi, you cute autist.

It's not an incredibly hard Touhou compared to the average so I don't consider it that great of an achievement, the only Lunatic clear I'm really proud of is th06 cause it took me an entire year of practice to do it. I wish I could clear th15.
The difficult parts of th18 are all in stage 3 and 4, the problem is that I was losing a lot of lives in a short amount of time and this left me with no power(similar to what happens in th12).

Eirin Death Avoidance Elixir is very good for survival cause you don't lose anything if you get it and can't deathbomb in time, it gives you a large error margin in a game that is very unforgiving when you die.

How do you guys motivate yourself to commit to clears once the initial spark and novelty of the games wears out? I've reached the point where I mostly go for hard/lunatic clears but since those require more skill they take more time to pull off. So I usually spend some time grinding them out, and if I haven't gotten the 1cc by a week or two I tend to give up once I lose interest or get burnt out.

I will admit I mainly play the games for fun, and a big factor in my interest in a game is the music. Wanting to listen to more good themes contributes a lot to my lasting interest, but I don't know. Maybe I'm too casual for the actual hard stuff.

Go into practice mode and play only the fun parts you like (i.e. your favorite boss fights), and get good enough at them that you can consistently NMNB them. Then just bombspam the rest of the game. Every 2hu allows you to do this.

HSiFS gives you lives on scoring, and with proper subseason releases you can rack up the millions rather quick. It's easier to score the higher the difficulty since there's a higher bullet density.

for Summer and Winter Lunatic, I needed the 500 million extend to clear
Spring's release doesn't make a very good bomb substitute like Winter and Summer does, patterns that could be skipped with Summer and Winter can't really be skipped with Spring. The release is only good for gaining huge chunks of PiV at a time. I needed the 1 billion extend to do it with Cirno Spring.

What revived my interest in the games was thprac. I didn't want to put in the time to slog through stage practice to get one try at a hard attack, and the other practice tools at the time weren't as good. If I wanted to go for a VoWG timeout, I don't want to bomb my way through the rest of the stage for one attempt at it.

Honestly pretty much the same. I don't really do runs anymore, but sometimes I still feel like going back to some cool cards like Devil's Recitation or Scarlet Meister, ISC-style, and the fact that it's actually possible is the only reason I keep playing every so often.
In the end the only reason games exist is to have fun, so if boring, time-consuming sections make you lose interest then don't do them. Unless you already want to go for a full run and feel ready for it.

If one is still at that point of having fun, the real fight has yet to begin. If one desires to excel in this genre there is no choice but to embrace the pain to the point of even taking on a masochistic mindset.
It easy to try to comfort oneself with lies and excuses such as that run being "good enough" or falling back on that "fun" bullshit. Ultimately, while these things might offer short-term comfort their veil will eventually dissipate to allow that awful sensation that is the realization of failure to poison the player's life.

Turned on PC today and decided to jerk around for a few minutes to wind down.
On a shitty ass run that I died twice on stage 3, and had Satori kamikaze me when I killed her sitting in her safe spot.
