Ludmilla’s reliable rigor had been redirected into other channels, as was the whim of the Fallen. There is only one reliable hook for mamono, when all is said and done, thought the damp doctor. The gods had learned this well, being the keepers of the supply. The Fallen had a remarkably low benchmark, happy to shift an uncemented fixation — the easiest way to supply a soulmate, Greilia had to admit. The physicists had proven that the pair-symmetry was multiversal, apparently. Even a flesh-handler like me can understand the implications, she thought miserably. The headache was forming again. She clacked back to the workbench, placing her tools into order for the next mini-batch of plates. I’m an nigh-immortal doctor, she scolded herself, as long as I’m patient…

Knowing forms in purpose and theory was enough to transmit the beastslaying forms accurately, but Ife’s mother had spawned her via a duelist’s life and travels. Nonetheless, they were Lizardmen, centuries of fighting everything seared into their flesh. What once was could be recalled, went the old saying among them. Ife hadn’t understood that the phrase carried a warning. To see the cloud pass before her parents eyes, when seeing her off on the training journey, had been done in a glance. To recognize it for what it was had taken Ife years into her training journey. Her youthful optimism had needed to taste fear and blood to reach the realization.

The push of the wind was exhilarating, probably the best thing about the mechanical beast, aside from convenience and speed. Making sure to give her wind-appreciating companion enough space so that her kata wouldn’t harm her, Ife drew the long heavy sabre at her waist in a blurred movement. The opening cut was a wide and high diagonal, as if to blunt the charge of a large creature with her swinging blade. Unhesitatingly she slid forward against the wind behind the last strike’s position, her feet and tail aligning to push her to the side of a charging beast’s face. She spun a half-step towards her starting position, as she let her wrist drop and spin, moving into a fast thrust to strike into the imaginary beast’s heart. It took mere seconds to move through the proven movements, but Ife felt unsatisfied. She well knew why. With a turn she noted the neutral shrug of the Cupid. Like most of her kind, Shukriyya wasn’t particularly verbose.

The human reliance on poison, winches, and powder were not contained in the ancestral memories of Lizardmen. Ife hadn’t expected those unknown things to be the common denominator and providence among human beastslayers. Aside from mating techniques, her mamono talents were all of a distinctly lateral and martial character. Her first year with a human beastslaying company had made her feel relatively useless. The senior members had deemed her ideas of slaying beasts in melee to be abnormal. Only one of them had wanted to keep her at hand.

Atop the train, Ife glided through another beastslaying form before turning to meet the patient stare of the Cupid. Shukriyya’s posture was, in the manner shared by the mamono of the Eros sect, oddly expressive. Even atop a rattling roaring train, her slight shift of wing and shoulder, conveyed her willingness to listen non-judgmentally. Ife huffed into the heat stealing wind, aware she’d have to periodically run through forms to stay up here. Ife had made her decision, galling though it was. Her old beast-slaying reflexes, honed by actual use, remained sharp. But her heart wasn’t in it. Useless, she moaned internally, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Rather than bemoaning her fate, Ife poured herself into fencing an imaginary humanoid. Blunting her strikes was irksome, she only knew the movements theoretically.

Keandre McLachlan, the scarred old senior among the human beastslayers, had insisted that she stay attached to the company. The dark wiry human had enough pull that all of the background mockery had stopped immediately. She had flushed when he’d taken her aside later. Ife’s desire to prove herself had been cut off before it could begin, his thick patois interrupting her planned spiel. “Ya don’t ’ave to tell me, childe. I know what you can do. Goddess send we don’t have to see it. You pick up something sides that sword you carrying, till it all goes sideways.” He had grimaced before continuing “I think ya not be finding what ya want here, but me can’t send a stripling off. Will be praying for ya, childe.” She had nodded, confused.

So Ife had done as he suggested. She learned poisons, traps, and tactics — ignoring the burn in her blood to prove herself.

Her unease grew as she realized how tenuous it all was, the slightest error in preparations could leave dozens of men gored and dying. Biting her tongue all the while, she knew in her blood that it was better to risk a single person. Having worked herself to exhaustion, the Lizardman gave the Cupid a passing nod, before climbing back inside the train. The old beastslayer had been right. Once she had proven herself a reliable fallback during a disaster, she couldn’t find what she so desperately needed there. The reek of gratitude mixed with fear made her insides churn. Strong enough to be worthy now, she was treated with nervous glances. In retrospect, Ife realized how predictable she was. “Not gonna fight ya, childe.” said the only human of the company who didn’t look at her with a tinge of fear. “We human beastslaying not be about fighting, less ya suicidal. Me not be sending a childe to die from Order nincompoopery either.” he continued, punctuating his statement by spitting in the opposite direction.

Ife had been intrigued at his mention of the Order, but only in a miserable fit of self loathing. Life among the beastslayers had tainted her with their knowledge of the Order’s decadence and disdain for human life. They sent men to die in droves to slay beasts, caring little for preparations or training. Ife mastered her pique enough to voice her own disdain for the Order. The grizzled beastslayer laughed at her crude invectives.

It had dawned on her that the combat training her mother constantly put her father through — often nude, and interleaved with amorous lust — was not how humans trained. Lustfully grinding away weakness was unknown, apparently. The insanely dense sinew and muscle of her human father didn’t have a counterpart in the normal human world, from what she had seen so far.

Ife knew of the Lizardman’s Heel, of course. Everyone had a chink in their armor, and every Lizardman lusted to be defeated by someone. Even with enviable strength among mamono, Ife was well aware of her personal failings. Slaying a rampaging mammoth hadn’t gotten her the sort of human attention she desired, only the scarred dark human wasn’t holding her at arms length. It would be shamelessly lewd to parade her weaknesses, thought the adolescent Ife, her tail lashing hungrily. But if any human could appreciate it, then certainly Keandre was suitable, thought Ife, as she gathered her nerve.

He rolled his eyes, and cut her off before she could speak on the subject. “Me NOT be fighting ya. But…me been praying for ya.” he said with emphasis on ‘praying’. As a Bacchean, he explained, he kept up with the social mingling his religion approved. In fact, there was some kind of joint-mission among the Sects to deliver medical supplies via train…

Bandits were a greater concern than any beast for such transportation, but the wily Keandre had made an effort to secure her a spot as a defender. So Ife had thanked him, swallowing the urges within her frills and tail. Gratitude and despair warred within her, but she couldn’t find what she sought here.

Oddly, though Ife as she stretched within the train-car, the patrons for this mission expected bandits. You could go so far as to say they anticipated it with excitement. The large amount of mamono personnel should have made it an open-and-shut matter, but Ife had learned to trust her niggling doubts. The seniors of the beastslayers had been wary sorts and hard negotiators, untrusting of clients. She had only been aboard for a few days, hopefully the briefing would dispel the sense of worry.
