To answer the latter first, it really depends a lot on personal circumstances. First Kig is a lot more affordable these days but it's still comparable to most other hobbies, starting out even with the cheaper masks can cost 500-700 dollars total to properly start, including hada/pads/first outfit/etc.

On top of that is the home situation, are they likely to go through your stuff and if so are they likely to break or throw out your stuff if they find it? If so it's probably better to wait a little longer. Do you have the privacy to be able to do kig stuff privately?

In terms of storage the mask is actually pretty easy for the most part, just needs to be somewhere out of sunlight, a relatively consistent temperature and low humidity. Personally just use a fabric case meant for electrical equipment with a desiccant inside but other people use DJ cases, motorcycle helmet cases, generic plastic boxes with diy padding and even just leaving it on a wig stand in a closet. On that note you'd probably want a wig stand as well so you can do hair and other such maintenance easily.

The bigger issue is all the other stuff, do you have somewhere to store pads, boobs, hadatai and shapewear? Wig sprays and brushes? outfits and possibly props? Wig heads and/or stands?

If all of the above isn't really a problem then things should be fine for you. If they are then I'd again recommend waiting until you're in a better position for it.




To actually answer the first question, generally speaking the go-to resource for kig is https://kigurumimask.web.fc2.com/basics.html

It has a list of the majority of the actual mask makers and has warnings for the shitty ones so it's not just a blind guess on your part. Also links places you can buy breastforms, pads, shapewear and other things. Quite a lot of the cheaper places need you to navigate taobao but if you get to that point there's plenty of people here or in the various kig discord servers who could help you with that if needed.

Currently, I have very little privacy. My door doesn't have a lock on it, I don't have any kind of personal wardrobe or closet I could store it in, not to mention my room is tiny in size, literally half of it is taken up by my bed. I've asked about getting a locked fitted before and it's a no, which is more than annoying. I'm also situated right next to my mum's bedroom and our walls are pretty much paper thin, you'd hear a pin drop in the other room which isn't good when you're dressing up in kig and making a lot of noise. The wig situation honestly shouldn't be very bad with Yuyuko, as long as you've not got some ott anime hair design often all you'll need to do is give it a spray every now and then with certain wig care products and brush it straight. With short and simple hair like Yuyuko's that shouldn't be hard. Something to keep in mind as well is for most masks the wigs come attached. The exceptions are usually masks that have a lock or are on the smaller size like a lot of the doll masks.

Have to say, all this really resonates with me. Was in a very similar situation myself when first looking into actually getting my first kig. Similar situation with mother right next door, no lock, no soundproofing, very little space, waiting years for a chance to get into the hobby.

I personally just said fuck it and took the leap of faith and naturally things went wrong, family walked in and saw my mask on full display, they caught me washing hada and shapewear, my mask itself got damaged due to negligence on my part, I've struggled to take pictures and otherwise find things to do in kig due to the limited space, aspects of my mask were well under my expectations and I've never been happy with how my body looks in kig.

Despite all that, my family ultimately thought "weird but ok then", turned out putting on and wearing kig generally doesn't make much noise, I managed to DIY my mask back to a point where I could show it in public again, I've found work arounds for taking pictures and came to enjoy camming sessions, I've even gone to meetups now and they're a blast with the right people. Whilst I'm still struggling with dissatisfaction with how my mask and body look, it's still something that I'm deeply passionate about.

What I'm trying to get at with this really is don't give up but also be prepared for set backs and things not going to plan. As shown above often things wont end up as bad as you'd assumed and/or there will be solutions. Even things you can't change like bonestructure can often be either worked around or outright ignored with the right mindset and company. There's a lot of reasons so many kigs dress up so rarely these days and I feel being aware of such things before you spend all your money will leave you more mentally prepared for it. A lot of kigs charge into things incredibly passionate and vulnerable only to get hurt when things aren't perfect, myself very much included there.
