I disagree. Taking a pretty interesting (though boring looking) male anime lead and turning him into a totally generic acting AND looking female version isn't superior at all. A female Kamina or female Simon (loli or adult) is one of the hottest anime-related things I can think of.

Well I can't say why Japanese artists do it but from my own personal opinion, I'd say that the majority of female anime characters are way too moe and spineless. Similarly, a great deal of male anime characters are unrealistically gutsy and brave.

I actually hate girly girls and really like tomboys and it seems one of the only ways Japanese anime artists are willing to make such female characters is as a novelty version of a pre-existing male character.
