How fast do you acquire new words when reading?
When I was learning english I only had to look up a word a couple of time to learn it for pretty much forever, could read anything I wanted without having to look up almost anything after 3 months
Now with japanese I have to look up the same words dozens of times and see it in anki a dozen more for it to finally stick, and even then I frequently mix up words I thought I knew with others because of similar kanji
Would you advise me to do some kanji study to increase my retention or will it get better on it's own after reading more?
for now I don't feel like I learn much new words while reading unless I learn them in anki afterwards, which shouldn't really be the purpose of srs

>> No.41294886

>>41294832
it gets faster and faster, thing with learning english is that you already has a subconscious idea of how everything worked, and some familiarity with it due to it being so prevalent
japanese is an alien language with an alien structure and alien words and alien writing.
you are right anki is not for that, and neither is kanji study, kanji study is for studying kanji, and kanji aren't words, just a way of representing them
eventually. through trying to read and listen and whatnot every day, some words will feel right and just be there, and then more and more will follow.
doing other things doesn't make the process faster or easier, but slower, what you need is to bash your face with the easiest possible thing in japanese (childrens shows, peppa pig, tadoku, hukumusume, whatever you can extract meaning from), and build yourself up from there.
good luck anon

only thing that matters for understanding knowing japanese is how much time you spend feeding your brain natural japanese

anki is feeding your brain chinese symbols so you can convert them into sounds
that's not natural so no it won't help you learn japanese

that being said, this process of converting chinese symbols into sounds is pretty useful if you spend a lot of time reading.

Well yeah obviously I'm going to have some better understanding next time I try again, but I've got a huge pileup of reviews I've missed and I just don't have the energy to bother, even with the methods for dealing with backed up reviews. I've had a horrible month and it hasn't stopped yet and I just don't have the energy for anything anymore. by the by, the reviews, anki, theyre just a tool, if the reason you are giving up is because you feel like youve been defeated by anki, or the pile is insurmountable or whatever, just delete them.
theres people that come every so often and post that theyve been beaten by a deck or something similar, and keep starting and stopping but that's missing the point. nothing at all happens when you complete the deck, it doesn't even matter, by the time you do it, you won't even care you did. the deck is meaningless, it always was

>The realization that you're gonna end and so will everything else eventually is not something you can fix with a workout.
and that's where you're wrong. with the big qualification that the "workout" is proverbial: it might also require fixing sleep, diet, supplementation, maybe even some medication, as well as getting into the habit of doing something "constructive" every day (even if it feels meaningless at first). but in 99% of cases it is fixable. except it doesn't feel like it, it does indeed feel like a rational conclusion, and people are prone to use this fact as an excuse to not fix it, because on some deep level they also derive some kind of perverse enjoyment from the despair.
the big catch is that to really internalize that the above is true, you need to experience the effects first-hand. but that's precisely the goal here, which is what makes it tricky.

anki is a supplement i.e. in addition. as they rep the white noise gradually lessens.

I just downloaded it and it tried to teach me all of hiragana on one card, and all of katakana on another card. I recognize this is in the intro section, and the person is trying to be comprehensive, but to me it's a sign that the author might not be thinking right. No one needs a flash card for the concept of hiragana itself.

if i was making a guide (im not), id just have tadoku, hukumusume, and where to find media, perhaphs some grammar resources, and how to mine
anki is a way to hold memories, not make them, and although i don't mean disrespect to the guy who made the deck, taking a look it feels like hes trying to turn a hammer (anki) into a classroom.
what is language?
a way to communicate a message
why does one care about the message?
because theres some sort of investment in a story, characters, events, something, anything.
if you just clip events with random characters, in random places, with random situations and no future or past, then there is neither a context nor a message to decode nor a reason to decode it.
for something like this id make all the stuff from a single series, or tell some sort of story with a beginning and an end, it doesn't even have to be a good one, just something that makes one able to conceptualize things as a meaningful sequence and get invested in "what the next step is" (even textbooks do this)

oh you have me wrong, I've visited a few times. I really want to be family hosted and share my seed...uh knowledge...yeah. Mutual learning experience! I mean sure, day 1 you arrive and have no idea what or who to do and can be overwhelming. It's like the start of the hero's journey or (I just watched it for the first time) similar to Conan after his parents were killed. Lost, bewildered...but daily growing into a strong, muscular Austrian with a thick accent, but still only as tall as most of the nip natives. By the end, you have mated with many women/jks, befriended a cunny, uh cunning yet loyal archer, and rescued a jk in distress. You are then holding the head of your enemy, your fear. Or in the hosting experience, you are hand-holding your host dad's wife and daughters, sitting in the master bedroom as king...waiting for your sequel 2 years later. At that point, you meet a greater challenge, no, not Grace Jones...but a gyaru JK with the perfect tan and a complete bitch attitude, just ACHING to be 'tamed.'

I've been using the "moeway" guide for a while and IMO its not worth it , its not a good guide it isn't written well and requires too much effort for no good reason. It's more than a Jap learning method more like Mehmet's (shoui's) lifestyle choices he's forcing onto you IMO.
i think the Tatsumoto guide is better (Decided to start using it a week ago) because they are more focused/streamlined idk how you call it.

>Since ampakines act on the systems related to glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter, they should be used as directed to safeguard against excitotoxicity. Excitotoxicity can result in brain cell death due to a dangerous overfiring of neurons. When the brain has too much glutamate produced, excess firing can lead to potentially dangerous excitotoxicity. When the neurons over-fire they can literally burn themselves out.
>Excess glutamate is a common cause of this. In fact, the preservative MSG (that is often banned in many Chinese restaurants) is known as mono-sodium glutamate and can lead to excitotoxicity itself. Long term exposure to high levels of glutamate may result in cell death, so over use of ampakines is not suggested.
