Try the free translated ones by Insani.

free and relatively short (<5 hours...probably)
while they arent the best out there, they should give you a feel for the style and variation in style between visual novels.

Red shift may be a good start, I dont recommend you read Narcissu as a first visual novel however.

Saya no Uta was my first, and so help me, it'll break your visual novel cherry as well, with all the terrifying vigor of a drunken abusive uncle.

Just be ready for lots of reading. Remember, visual novels are basically books that use images and sound effects to set the mood. Don't walk in expecting a real game

Don't listen to the people recommending Yume Miru Kusuri, it blows chunks. A lot of the art in it is severly derpy.

Narcissu is a pretty damn good starter; there's no sex in it though, so if you want fap fodder, keep well away (unless you have a fetish for terminally ill girls).

A Midsummer Day's Resonance is another good one.
