Battler becoming a depressed motherfucker is, by and large, the right direction to go with his character. It's a tad uncomfortable to witness for the readers, since we have love. Furthermore, I think it's is just a set up to his apotheosis as the gold-sword-of-truth wieldin', Beatrice rescuin', cape donnin', pointin' bad ass that is to come.
