As far as I know it first appeared in fanart shortly after episode 5, then with the portrait it seemed it was made canon, then there was a sprite for it in episode 6. I have a feeling I'm wrong, though.

It's ascended badassery. Once all the elevens finished playing EP5 and read about Battler becoming the Endless Sorcerer, Pixiv absolutely exploded with cape-related fanart. Then, the portrait came out, and everyone rejoiced because it was fucking badass. Both east and west united in appreciation for the cape, with Westerners reiterating "FUCK YEAR KICKING ASS IN A MANLY MANNER" as the Japanese fans babbled in Nico comments discussing how goddamned elegant the cape was.

Then, everyone realize that Ryukishi would probably devote his time to drawing 23 more pantsless demons instead of adding a cape to the Battler sprites. When EP6 came out, everyone was shitting their pants over whether or not the cape was there...and it was. Ryukishi sacrificed pantsless demons to add to the kickass.

And then Battler was emo and crazy and everyone bawwwed.
