I learned it in 3 months with Heisig's method and I didn't even try that hard. 3-5 hours per day. You can easily double that, and you get exactly 6 weeks then.

You see, thinking “logic” and being able to write 理 doesn’t mean anything. First of all, 理 isn’t even a word. 論理、理論、理解、料理、管理、修理、義理、心理学 are words and until you can write real words in real Japanese, I’m not impressed.

Learning Japanese is useless. Study and get a good playing job instead with all that spare time.

When I get rich I'm gonna hire a translator. She will translate VNs for me line by line as I play them. I'll also hire a full-time hooker because nowadays I'm too lazy to fap to ero scenes.

Nice copy pasta. RTK is good because it teaches you how to write the Kanji. Even people who are fluent readers in Japanese have a bitch of a time remembering how to write characters.

Hey y'all I actually want to get a consensus before I spend my Christmas pittance on books. I'd say I'm kind of gaining steam as far as learning Japanese, and I know about 100 kanji. Like I couldn't just list the kun and on readings if you asked me to, but I can read 'em in a sentence or in certain common combinations, you know? Is RTK a good idea for me? I'm already doing smart.fm's core lesson things, so what I really want is a way to systematically memorize kanji.

>> No.3995027

>>3994979
RTK is good because it teaches you systematically in a logical way so constructing kanji in your mind becomes an easy task. For example first you learn 口, then you build on it and learn 中, 古, etc. It won't teach you the readings or even the exact meanings until volume 2 (which many suggest to just not do) but it does wonders for actually knowing the kanji. In other words it will put you in the same position to learn Japanese that a Chinese person would be in.

>> No.3995119

From experience, the system in RTK is really the only sensible way to approach learning them. The actual content isn't that great, though... you'll probably want to come up with your own meanings/stories, and more importantly a few of the "keywords" he gives have basically nothing to do with the kanji, so be careful. I'd recommend getting Anki and using the "RTK with kanji definitions" deck.

Still, it's really the only way for an adult foreigner to learn them. I started taking actual Japanese classes after doing RTK, and I was bowled over by Genki's hilariously bad order of teaching them. 曜 was like #15 or something... seriously?

Thanks very much.
>use anki

>> No.3995179

>>3995119
Genki is okay for the most part. There are books that have much worse orders (pic related). At least Genki has the stroke orders, and the grammar parts and vocabulary lists are great.

>>3995179
There be no pic for ye to relate to sir.

>> No.3995206

>>3995149
Oh, I should add that by "use Anki and that deck" I mean to avoid his few nonsense keywords. I would suggest making physical flashcards, even if you never use them... it's enough practice to let you write the "components" without hesitation from muscle memory, which of course makes learning to write them for reals much easier/ actually possible.

>> No.3995207

Kanjidicks. It won't be the most fun, but it's the most sensible order.

Well, it's certainly used a LOT, and I suppose you should learn the days of the week early, but yeah... it's a pain in the ass to learn such kanji before you learned the radicals it uses. I'd say all textbooks are inherently flawed.

The problem is that they usually have "themes" for lessons. For example school, travel, food, etc. and they teach you words and kanji related to that topic. This works just fine for most languages, but kanji just don't work that way, there are some pretty nasty kanji that are used in very common words.

The other problem is that classes can only expect you to do so much work at home. They can't really tell you to learn 200 kanji by next week, since 90% of the class would fall behind quickly. Because of this you'll take classes for 3-4 years and only learn 500 or so kanji. Not even enough for manga (without furigana).

>> No.3995235

>>3995179
Oh yeah, I agree with that other stuff. I just mean that their order of teaching the kanji, plus lack of any meaningful help with actually remembering them beyond "write them a lot," leaves something to be desired.
