What would you recommend for someone who just wants to understand it? Everything I've done starts with reading and identifying characters which is usually where new languages start. I guess there's no short cuts with this stuff.

How I did it:
Learn Hiragana and Katakana in a few days.
Start Wanikani to learn kanji and always do your daily reps. Wanikani is paid but imo absolutely worth it since it also explains radicals and teaches you vocab at same time. Kanji become manageable once you properly understand radicals.
Work through a core 2k vocabulary list to learn to most common words at the same time as you're doing Wanikani.
When you have about 100-200 kanji learned, start a grammar guide. I used Tae Kim since it's free, pretty good, and covers everything you need for daily convo's.

All this will take a few months to finish, but after that the hardest and most boring part is over and you'll have a solid grasp of the basics. After that just go full on immersion. Just consume heaps of raw Japanese content. Google or use cure dolly to look up unknown grammar you find along the way and make Anki flashcards of new vocab you find in the wild.

Oh, and don't join any Japanese learning communities/threads/discords, etc. They don't actually help and will do nothing but kill your motivation.

Wanikani is something I did daily for a little over a year for about 30 minutes every day. I stopped around level 40 (1300ish kanji) since at that point I started burning out and diminishing returns is a thing. With those 1300ish kanji you can read about 92% of the kanji used on Japanese twitter. The rest I just look up if I find them in the wild and put into my anki if I feel like they're useful.

Core 2k I didn't do that seriously, but they're more "handy to know". I find that finding words in the wild, in context, sticks way better than just learning off of a vocab list.

Tae Kim took like 4 months of doing 1 or 2 chapters every day. I didn't do it that quickly since grammar needs time and seeing it used in the wild to let it set it.

So for the first 6 or so months, I did anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours of actual "study" daily, while watching and trying to understand hololive streams in my free time. That's also why I called it the boring part. These are the basics you unfortunately need to grind into your brain.

Now I just do like 15 minutes of anki reps everyday and just consume raw Japanese content.

Learning Japanese is not a race. All the info needs time to set it. There is no deadline. Just do it at your own pace. The only rule is that you HAVE to do it every day.
