I've been doing practice exams once a month since last year, mostly to gauge my progress and force myself to do a variety of practice types, like listening and kanji review. I finally got all A's in the N4 exam, and even if it's not a perfect score it feels like progress to go from "I don't know which hiragana this is" to "I can consistently understand the gist of sentences at the N4 level, kinda". Should I keep going with my mix of Anki for grammar and vocab, WaniKani for kanji study, and variety shows/simple books for immersion, or is it time to step up my game and move on to something else?

I’m not the person you replied to, but I’ve been at this for twenty years now and the secret is that a book, pen, and paper is superior to any app. Before Anki and Wanikani existed, the most popular way to learn kanji was with the Hadminsky and Spahn workbook, which literally just contains spaces to write each kanji about fifty times. I’ve done that in the past and it’s worked just fine, better than any application if I’m honest. Writing things down on paper is one of the single best ways to remember them.

I have a system now that I invented for kanji, which unfortunately does require a computer. I have a python script that shuffles spreadsheets and turns them into a printable test. Every day I print it and take it and record my score. I work on a set of 100 characters at a time. This method has been very effective for me and takes only about twenty minutes per day. Combined with daily Japanese reading practice, this has been all I need to learn kanji.

If I were you? I’d just go buy any book that has all the Jouyou Kanji (it REALLY doesn’t matter that much which one), some graph paper or real kanji paper if you can find it, and just start writing them.

Just watched Pop in Q with Japanese subtitles taken from Kitsunekko. The subs were off (showing up earlier and earlier as the film went on) so I had to use the transform framerate option in Aegisub to an output of 24fps to get them fully synced. Naturally I tried to listen to every line to see if I could understand it first before looking at the subs. The movie sucked, but it was my first time watching a whole movie with JP subs so it felt good to do. The toughest part was the start when most of the characters were talking in Tosa-ben, but they started using standard Japanese after getting isekai'd so it got much easier. Gonna keep on watching a bunch of other JP movies like this in the future to improve my listening skills.
