Disregard bad advice frequently posted in these threads. Things to avoid:
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, confusing for beginners.

one of the most productive things you can do is accept that your understanding of something (affix, word, phrase, grammatical structure), maybe even multiple things, can and most likely will be incomplete - sometimes even into your later stages of study.

instead of reading a chapter raw then reading a translated version, just read a synopsis of the chapter in your native language (or which ever native language you're most comfortable with, assuming you know more than one) *before* you read the chapter in Japanese. even then there are things you will likely not understand fully, especially as a beginner. do the same thing for anime, tv shows, or movies (assuming you can find brief synopses online).

it important not to overwhelming in learning new language. I saw it a few times and concider this a friendly reminder not to overwhelm yourself and give brain time to process information when learning. I see a lot of people who started learning and overwhelm themselves with information only to burnout very quickly and never to return or take long breaks making what they did learn not very benefitiacl. It's better to learn small dose of stuff everyday for long period than massive amount of practice and information only to lose intrest or getting tired and leaving after a short while. regarding reading fluency, this is a question for those who have gotten to that point of reading fluency of "unless I'm reading some literary work or historical document I rarely come across new words". how long would you say it took you to get from "i rarely come across new kanji" to this particular level of reading fluency?

I'm at a point right now where new kanji are far an few in between, which feels GREAT. I'm immersing myself daily reading and watching whatever interests me and it's been like over a month since I last saw a new kanji that wasn't just an obscure name character. That being said, i still feel like I'm being constantly bombarded by words and expressions I've never seen before and honestly it feels like there is no end in sight!

Studies show that by using input method people learn ~30 words/hour, from which ~10 remain in the long memory. It's not as effective as Anki, when people learn 10 words in 10 minutes (in 6 times faster), but if you have enough time to use Japanese content, it's fun and decent method to learn. I've been learning Japanese for close to 15 years now, with various periods of activity and inactivity. I started with a distance learning course and culminated in a university degree, including a year studying at a Japanese university, and eventually working in a Japanese speaking job.

After reflecting on all those years of language learning, I think I've boiled down the process to a handful of core principles that should hold true for learning any other language.

(1) A language can't be taught, only learned

This will be familiar to anyone who studied languages in school. I did four years of Chinese in highschool, and I don't remember a word of it. This is because the only time I actually did any Chinese was in the classroom. We were never encouraged to go do additional learning on our own, or guided towards resources and native content. Admittedly, native content and resources is much more widely available these days, but the point is the same. Most of the language learning process takes place outside the classroom on your own time. No teacher can sit with you and teach you the language. They can only correct your mistakes and guide you in your learning. You still have to do all the work yourself.

(2) If you only use beginner materials, you will only ever be a beginner

There are no shortage of language learning materials available to us these days, but the vast majority are aimed at the absolute beginner. Too many people seem to get stuck using nothing but these materials and apps and then wonder why they aren't progressing. These are fine to begin with but you want to move on to engaging with content made for native speakers as soon as you can. That means a lot of reading, listening, writing, and speaking if you can.

(3) You learn a second language in fundamentally the same way as you learn your first

In a way, learning a second language is a lot like losing weight. There are no shortage of diets and fasting regimens out there but fundamentally those that work all do one thing - they make you consume fewer calories than you burn off. Weight loss can always be boiled down to the simple formula of Calories In vs Calories Out.

(4) Grammar matters, don't skip it

This may seem like a contradiction to the point above as we certainly didn't learn a lot of grammar in our native languages (at least not until much much later in the process) but actually this is one of the reasons why learning a second language can be done much faster than learning your first. Sure, we could ignore grammar and just try to intuit it from all the input, but why sit around trying to figure it out when you can just read an explanation and immediately start implementing it? The reason people want to avoid grammar isn't because it's unimportant but because for many people it's very boring. It certainly can be, but if you want to progress faster it's better to make an effort to learn grammar.

(5) You don't have to live in the country to learn the language

One viewpoint I hear often from people who have never tried to learn a second language is that it's basically impossible to learn a language to a high level unless you live in the country. Now your language will certainly improve a lot if you are constantly surrounded by it and forced to use it, but you can absolutely get to a very good level without going to the country. We have great access to a lot of native content these days through the internet. So much so that we can essentially simulate the immersion experience. By the time I moved to Japan to study, my language was already at a very high level so that I had very few instances of confusion or misunderstanding. I was able to communicate effectively and without much effort. Living there certainly helped to smooth out the rough edges but the fact remains I got very comfortable in the language before ever setting foot in the country.

(6) The difficulty of a language has more to do with availability of resources and native content than grammar or writing systems

Now, I'm not suggesting that Japanese and Thai are equally hard to learn for native English speakers. Obviously a language which is radically different from your mother tongue will be trickier to learn than one which is much closer. That said, if Thai resources were much more available to me than Japanese ones, then Thai would be much easier. When setting out to learn a language the first thing you should do is make an assessment of the resources available to you. How easy is it to find textbooks and grammar exercises? Is native content easy to find online. Does your DVD collection already have subtitles and dubs in the language you want to learn? How easy is it to find native speakers to talk to? Grammar and writing systems can be challening, but if you are only able to find a handful of old textbooks and virtually no native speakers nearby then the language will seem much less accessible.
