Hi everyone. I've been studying Japanese for a little more than two years now and am planning on taking the JLPT in December. I know around 400 kanji right now and will learn a lot more this fall. I was just wondering if anyone knows around how much kanji is needed for each level?

I've seen that its like N4 = 300 , N3 = 600, N2 = 1000. But I've also seen posts that say N4 is closer to 100 and N3 is closer to 300, so I was just curious if anyone knows about how much kanji is needed for each level so I know how much I need to study. Thank you in advance!

JLPT feels pointless

I never studied for level 5 4 or 3, I studied for 8 months for level 2 just crammed all of the kanji because I had literally never studied any of them before.

Past with a 143 out of 180 even though I could barely understand any part of the test except for listening.

Then I stop studying again completely for 2 years and forgotten most of the kanji.

I just took the N1 and to be fair I did fail but I only failed by six points.

And the reason why it's because it's a multiple choice test with efficient guess work you can really up your score if you have just one skill.

And my one skill is listening because I live here.

I got a 50 on the listening section, 19 on the reading, and 15 on kanji, and I almost passed.

I know that test means a lot to a lot of people but the thing is like all I felt when I saw my score sheet today was that it's a giant waste of time and there's no reason for me to study and pass.

I know it's fairly common knowledge that language tests are not a true gauge of ability but when I first started studying Japanese I thought being able to pass the N1 would mean I suddenly understand everything.

Apparently it's just going to mean I'm a good guesser who picked up a few kanji while living in Japan.

So unless an employer specifically requested from me I think I'm done spending 6400yen on a piece of paper.

To those of you who did study hard please don't take this as me trying to belittle your accomplishments, as I said however much I talk bad about this test I did still fail.

I just wanted to fail by more.

This is my 7th? and final attempt at learning the language. I started learning on and off since 2014.

2014 - 2019 Wasted 5 years on "Remembering the Kanji (RTK)" Approx. 5 attempts.

Back in December, my in laws casually asked about my New Year’s resolutions. I don’t do those, since I almost always have some continuous goal, so I kind of just mentioned some of my Japanese language goals. Eventually the discussion led to my explaining that Japanese was particularly difficult as a language, to which my FIL replied that “all languages are pretty hard.” I already know German, and, while a bit odd, it is, in comparison to Japanese, a breeze for a native English speaker to learn. I didn’t really feel like expanding on this, though, so I just kind of went with it.

This isn’t the first time I’ve utterly failed to convey a concept about Japanese. I once complained to my cousin that Japanese was similar to English in having a lot of exceptions and idioms and although she knows some Japanese, she seems to think it IS basically just English anyway just because it has a lot of English loan words.

This all got me thinking. I’ve often had a lot of difficulty explaining the oddities of Japanese to people. Things like particles, topic vs. subject (which I’m pretty sure no one actually fully understands), kanji and kanji readings, how much information is carried by adjective conjugation, counters, the list goes on. I have a Chinese friend who initially thought Japanese would be easy because he knows hanzi, but even he mentioned it was a bear for him to attempt Japanese.

So my question is, how do you explain just how esoteric Japanese is for native English speakers? Have you ever been frustrated trying to explain a Japanese language concept in English? What are some examples of misunderstandings you’ve encountered by non-Japanese learners about the language or the process of learning it? How do you attempt to explain some of these things to people who don’t study it?

it's not that special, every language has its quirks.
what's particularly annoying about japanese is that you can't read it without knowing kanji. that means if you see a word you don't know, then you not only don't know what it means, but you can't even read it out loud either.
and even if you recognize the kanji in a word, there's no guarantee that you know the correct reading because most kanji have multiple readings.

exactly like that, if you just do anki you will be unable to use the shit you memorize, and if you just immerse without anki, you will retain stuff, but you will take longer to. eventually you don't need anki anymore and can remember words/kanji/etc from seeing em a couple times like with english, but not at first (for me, anyway)

Great! :D I just learned a new phrase today! There’s a phrase in Japanese called “腹八分“ (hara-hachi-bu) which roughly means “80% full”. Where you eat until you’re, well, 80% full (when you feel full, but not like you’re going to throw up). I also recommend eating in 3 hour intervals, like the Swedes do (I’m half Swedish, so I know a little bit here lol). When I visit my Swedish family, we have breakfast at 9am, lunch at 12pm, fika (afternoon tea) at 3pm, and dinner at 6pm. I find, at least, that regular small meals tend to keep me fuller for longer than more spaced-out large meals.
