Well, I also mean that he has been branching out into directing and producing. For example, he made one of 3 movies in the omnibus flick Zokki (2021) along with Naoto Takenaka and Takumi Saitoh
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14444620/

He also won the Ikemental series of Documental on Amazon Prime, and was in a cool series called Takayuki Yamada's Tokyo Akabane (2015), which is like a pseudo-documentary of him hanging out in that area, from the same director as Kinnikuman: The Lost Legend https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4333964/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_32

Also was the main character in Naked Director on Netflix, too.

Interesting point I found about Tetsuaki Matsue, the director of the Akabane and Kinnikuman pseudo-documentary series, here is a video of him getting attacked on stage at an Ikebukuro greeting event by the main actor from a previous movie, for heavily power harassing them during filming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3O4oeP6dlM

Seems like it's a musical film with no dialogues. Loved the musical performances he directed in his documentary Planetist so I'm personally looking forward to this especially because it looks like it got similar aesthetics to his Resurrection Trilogy.
I think he's creating smaller and more experimental films due to the restrictions of the COVID situation in Japan. This film was shot in December 2020.

I liked it. It's not for everyone, and it will make you cringe (a lot). The final scene somewhat retroactively slightly changes the flavour of the whole movie, making it less cringy (and more interesting, in my opinion), but also sadder.

I didn't know the main actress but if you like her that may be a plus, the movie is centred on the guy but she's in most of the scenes.

Bad remake even if the story was different from the Heisei version. Suzuki Honami as Akana Rika is too iconic, no one can compete with her as Akana so Ishibashi Shizuka felt so wrong acting as her. Also the guy doing Kanchi's role was awkward, it's an insult to Oda Yuji from the Heisei version. I pushed through to the end but the casting overall just felt so wrong to me and the story felt thin and weak. The Heisei version also had many flaws that stand out when you watch it now, but this Reiwa version makes you realize that Tokyo Love Story is a product of its time and shouldn't be remade at all or else it will lose all the charms it had.

Dramas don't age, they're products of their time. You do though, you grow out of them. If it was good back then, which it was, then it's good today. Meanwhile your taste changes overtime.

It's pretty obvious the large majority of thread regulars here know Japanese already, some even living there and just watch TV regularly while posting here in real time. I feel like this is a shock to the newfags that come in thinking it's like other fandoms on this site but you have to understand how niche of an interest this is.
Japan had no interest in selling their shows to the west, especially streaming rights as they feel like it's worth a lot more than something reasonable. It's why official streams never caught on and some services even went defunct. This however doesn't mean that dorama fans stopped watching the shows.
Japanese movies are always popular with normies but those aren't really the focus of this thread. Not to mention there are better places for those types of discussion as what people like to discuss revolves around the craft of film, which is why it attracts normalfags.

Hamabe was cute but the content of the drama is very thin, even if it's only the first episode (the next episodes will probably follow the same thing), it was just too shallow. It's like a Mito Komon medical drama that ends with Hamabe making diagnosis. Also she's someone with amnesia but no medical knowledge, right? She's too young for that. If she was at least in her 30s, the setting would be more convincing.

Oshii Mamoru's secret movie which was screened 3 years ago at some small film festival and never elaborated what it was is gonna get a one-night screening at another small film festival next month. A trailer was released yesterday, the movie's title is Chii Tomodachi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwHx2SnY84M&t=95s
Seems like it shares the same story concept and characters with his 2021 anime Vlad Love. I hope it somehow gets leaked online.

It's basically a dramatization of the Moritomo Gakuen scandal, they even brought someone who sounded like Abe Shinzo as the PM. The main cast aside, the supporting cast is full of actors who suit their roles perfectly, something you rarely see today (reminded me of Hanzawa Naoki). The Suzuki Kazuya parts played by Yoshioka Hidetaka was the best and most engrossing. It was very realistic, which honestly made it less interesting in the second half and I was disappointed when it didn't have a poetic justice ending.

Indeed. His works are charming, funny, sometimes very meta and surreal. Sadly he died in the 90's amid a very suspect "suicide", believed by many to have been a yakuza hit after he satirized them in a film.

One Million Yen Girl (2008) has Yu Aoi working at supermarkets, among other places.

Adrift in Tokyo has those quirky asides among the supermarket staff.

No One's Ark (2003) has salespeople stationed outside supermarkets here and there.

Hibana (2016) ((TV show)) has a manzai duo do a paito dressed as cows outside a supermarket.

>> No.38296074

>>38295424
It wasn't that good. I thought the characters, the events and the terminologies were familiar, turns out it's based on the manga Gangoose which was an adaptation of a nonfic novel. The manga carefully reflected the author's coverage of poverty and other issues, whereas the drama's direction was a bit on the nose. If you're gonna adapt such a story, you should go all the way or just don't do it half-heartedly. The direction was killing the script.
