I tried downloading the JMDict files on the FooSoft website (also linked on GitHub) but I don't understand how to make it work with Memento.
The files inside the .zip archives don't work, nor the files within .tar.xz archive, and the archives themselves don't work either. It says Could not open dictionary file. i'm still learning japanese but i've reached a pretty decent level in terms of comprehension, but there is a small issue.
even if i know all the kanji and the grammar of a sentence, it still takes a while to remember all the pronounciations, so i can't get it "flowing", and because of that i keep missing the point unless i re-read it a couple of times.
on the other hand, if i read the english-translated sentence first, then i instantly associate kanji-pronounciation-meaning of the japanese one. i'm pretty sure most of you also had the same experience

my question is, is it "better" to try-hard the japanese sentence (which makes it feel like you are studying and not reading something you enjoy) or to read the translation first and then the japanese sentence?
i'm pretty sure that the brain will make the associations regardless, i just wanted to hear your opinion

Hello everybody, I'd like to reflect on the hardships of being around the n3 jlpt level and exchange ideas and experiences.

I'm brazilian, so my first language is Portuguese. I picked up English quite fastly and so was naive enough to think I was good at languages. I decided to learn Japanese. Besides being challenging, it was, to me, it sounded beautiful and its grammar was just so elegant. Well, that was around 2011. In that year, I took JLPT N5 and confidently passed. "This is gonna be fast", I thought.

Well it was neither fast, nor easy, so I gradually gave up. Around 2017, I timidly started again on duolingo and, from the tests I've done online, know all the kanji grammar and vocabulary for n4. Although I stopped studying, I never stopped exposing myself to that beautiful language in movies, music and so on.

One of the reasons I think I had no trouble learnibg English and that nade the process rather enjoyable, was that I could "study" by reading material about stuff that I like.

Kanji doesn't allow you to enjoy while, but to enjoy after(you learn it), and the thing I don't understand is how the hell people learn it with flashcards. Like, okay, I can use them and memorise the meanings but what use do tou get knowing the meaning of a certain kanji without knowing actual words?

I hate anki and flashcards. They are boring to me. Is there a more enjoyable way to learn kanji? A way that takes into consideration that you already know the kanji and vocab for n5 and n4 and enables you to read phrases?

Thanks to podcasts, I think I'm getting better at listening, but with so many unknow words, it gets frustrating.

I feel like, at least for me, the most important feature is being able to read in a language. The other abilities come naturally as a result, if it is what you are looking for.

Anyone who went through this could tell me how they advanced?
