Yeah, people still play Melty Blood Act Cadenza online. Or if you feel like grinding your hands to dust you could go try Guilty Gear XX #Reload, that's online as well.

Beyond that, you'd need a console. Blazblue and Street Fighter IV both have a thriving online scene.

Though really... I hate playing online. A couple frames really does make all the difference in being able to play an effective game. If you live near a mildly populated area and have a car, I'm sure you could find a scene for some games though.

Soul Calibur has some pretty fun single player modes. Especially 2 and 3. In SC2 it's kind of like an adventure game where you explore a world map and you get some narration before each fight. The third is a strategy game where you move different fighters in a turn-based manner.

4, is a major stepback in single player, though. You basically climb a tower with a few fights on each level with no story.

He could always grab it for the 360, it does have piracy. Not to mention the 360 version is pretty superior anyways, faster loading, the dashboard doesn't lag the game like the XMB does (I organize things, so I have nearly the max 100 friends, and it lags Blazblue, which is a killer, I have to play on a different account).

Though if you wanted to play on a 360, I'd heavily suggest grabbing a nice stick, like a SFIV TE, which runs over $100. The 360 pad is a joke for fighting games.

>could you elaborate as to why you'd want to play a fighting game single player
Because I have no friends, too lazy and socially awkward to find some people to play with offline, and netplay sucks with most fighters.

>> No.3812786

>>3812778

I don't mean why you'd play it single player as opposed to multiplayer, I just mean, what is the draw of it over say... Devil May Cry, or Ninja Gaiden or something? Most of these have absolutely no pretense of story, and the AI are usually absolute jokes.

Not to mention playing online is mostly useless for real competition anyways, even if your data moved at the speed of light, you'd still have a multiple frame delay with people you play against.

Ah... Depends on the stick. I have a Hori EX2, and really... It's lacking. The square gate is a bit annoying, the buttons require a bit of force (they're durable though, and it's nothing you can't get used to), and the thing is light as hell, so lap play is pretty much your only choice (a lot of people prefer a fixed surface, to emulate an arcade). The switches for the stick are a MUST replace if you're fixing it up, everything else is fine if you're used to it, though I'd replace the square gate. Soldering all the new buttons in was a pain, the PCB isn't exactly built all that sturdily (had to fix it on top of installing things since I accidentally broke it a bit while installing buttons...)

I've heard nothing but good things about stuff like the Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 though. It's got quality switches, a good gate, the buttons are the same (a bit of force needed, but durable and quality), and more importantly, it's heavier.

You can bind the specials to a key, or atleast in ps2 version. I've replaced grab, a key that moved backwards even though the normal key for back was a different one, and dodge with special a, b, and grail. makes things a whole lot easier

>> No.3812913

>>3812854

Yeah I got the EX2, I'm not a big arcade stick buff but even I can tell that the switches are lacking. I have a bunch of omron switches lying around as spares for my IIDX controller wonder if I can use them.

>> No.3812936

>>3812913

Sadly, I have no idea as to switches. The guide I ended up following for working on the stick recommended http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/95073301.htm - I have no idea if the switches you have lying around have the same sort of inputs.

Of course, you do need to desolder the wires, replace the switches, and resolder, which does require some equipment. You could pick up what you need at a Radioshack or something for like... $20? Not really sure, I don't think a crappy soldering iron and some braid are all that expensive.

To be honest, I either use someone else's stick (tends to be an HRAP3 for a PS3 or a SFIV TE for 360), play with a PS3 pad at home, or end up at an arcade. I bought and customized my stick, but I never use the thing since it's still worse than the nicer ones you can buy. Though really, what I could do is replace the switches, glue some weights inside the bottom plate and put some rubber stoppers on the bottom and it'd be fine.

>> No.3812961

>> No.3812962

Yeah the omrons I have are snap on and same inputs. Actuating force is a bit lighter though (I think).

I have soldering equipment and experience doing this sort of thing.

>> No.3812983

>>3812962

Then you're probably much more set than I was when I messed with my stick!

I'll ask you sometime how it went, since you have a trip. I'm kind of curious as to how new switches would really affect it. I might end up building a case of my own for the parts and I'd like to be sure that it's not just the apparatus itself that causes the stick to behave the way it does.

I'm starting to make a hobby out of this, I tinker with friends' sticks too. The last one I had to fix by hitting it with a hammer repeatedly, it was pretty fun, and it was the first SFIV TE I got to break open, since everyone's usually stingy about breaking their warranty seals.

>> No.3812986

I used to run an EX2 for BB and could play perfectly fine.

>> No.3813001

>>3812986

It's not like it doesn't work, it just requires an excessive amount of 'getting used to'. I didn't like having to think about each quarter circle motion I made to make sure it came out right. Every time I started just trying to play naturally I'd start dropping quarter circle inputs, since it'd just read them 26, rather than 236.

I'm just vastly better with a PS3 pad anyways. I don't think I'll ever 'graduate' to a stick completely. I don't play a character that necessitates it for high level anyways (Nu, and yes, I do feel bad).

Yes.

You can even use it for Grail supers and things such as Zero Lancer's triple Gáe Dearg. You can't use it for the commands after Gilgamesh's initial chain but it does remove the need for that command so you only have to pull the opponent back then hit the right buttons.

Using the phrase "watered down" would suggest that the same gameplay elements and concepts are employed in Blazblue, only at a lesser rate or lower level of involvement/complexity, as in Guilty Gear.

This is simply not the case. The gameplay style of turtling-heavy Blazblue is markedly different from Guilty Gear, where you can actually do things other than zone without being zoned for free.
