/jp/ I gotta know
how is the japanese language structured?
meaning like what is hiragana used for, and what is kanji for?

>> No.3797223

kanji is the phoenetic alphabet for spelling foreign words. no one uses hiragana anymore so you dont need to know it.

>> No.3797221

Kanji: Nouns, bases of adjectives and verbs.
Hiragana: Particles, conjugations of adjectives and verbs.
Katakana: Foreign words.

Basically.

>> No.3797229

that's not what "structure" means..

>> No.3797234

/jp/ is not your private linguistics library.

>> No.3797328

OP here
If I don't know the kanji character for a word, is it possible for me to use hiragana to write it out?

>> No.3797342

>>3797328

Yes, but Japanese has a lot more homonyms, so just using hiragana will be much more confusing.

>> No.3797359

>>3797342

then wouldnt it be confusing during speech as well?

>> No.3797362

>>3797359
context gets the point across 9/10 times

the rest of the time, it supplies lulz

>> No.3797385

>>3797362
so then context would get it across in writing too, amirite?

>> No.3797412

>>3797328
Well yeah, for elementary students until they learn kanji.

>> No.3797415

how is this relevant for /jp/?

>> No.3797419

>>3797385

Hiragana-only is much more confusing visually than aurally.

Damn, you're persistent.

Writing in Japanese is just a flood of characters. Spaces aren't used to separate words. Even the comma doesn't play as big of a role as in english. So when your entire sentence is in hiragana, someone literally has to read them one character at a time and decide where the words are. And if something doesn't make sense, they have to start all over and try to regroup the hiragana again. It's impractical and a nuisance to have to read everything that way.

In b4 Japanese is backwards pants on head retarded, because it is

>> No.3797460

It is difficult for the Japanese to learn English spelling.
It is the same as Kanji.

>> No.3797468

This is a terrible thread and you should all feel terrible for posting in it.
