I use vocab cards for things that can be recalled easily and sentence cards for everything else. If it isn't something I can visualize, or else the name or fish or something like that, I don't see how I could learn it though a vocab card. Also, many words are written with the same kanji, which makes learning even readings very annoying using vocab cards.
