Because here on /jp/ every poster evaluates the thread and his own post before pressing submit, if the thread doesn't need to be bumped or the post doesn't add enough to the thread to warrant a bump, we sage the post as a common measure.

/jp/ is a slow board and the correct usage of sage makes it so that we can have more relevant things on the front page.

I really don't see the point of "polite sage". Saging so you can insult someone and not bump the thread (because you don't like it) makes sense. Saging because you care about the thread and want to contribute to it... doesn't. You care so much about it you want to see it bumped off the first page by Naruto and One Piece discussions?

On Japanese TEXT boards, sage is always used, no matter how important the post is. If someone accidentally ages he can expect 100+ posts of rage and the thread is ruined.

This works because of thread lists and thread-following programs.

Learn to use slow boards and come back later. The way they work are really different from your usual /a/, /v/ or /b/, where nobody knows how to use of the sage function properly. Well, no, it's not that they don't know how to use it, it's just that in such fast boards, bumping a thread or not loses all its meaning.

>> No.3740964

>>3740841
I find ageing intentionally rude, especially on text boards. On faster boards, such as imageboards, it's a bit more acceptable, but I always use sage unless I consider my post to be a considerable contribution to a thread, or I selfishly age an older thread that interests me to keep it alive for a little longer.

If other people don't want to obey this honor code, that's up to them, but I would regard them as being rude. I've even seen people age threads as a form of trolling, more predominant on text boards, where people age a crappy thread just to annoy other posters.

It doesn't have anything to do with being Japanese.
You should try posting on a slow board, much slower than /jp/, post there seriously, don't troll too much. Let's say it's a de facto non-moderated board, and it may have some really crappy threads, which luckily are fading into obscurity. Now some bastards comes and bumps all kinds of crappy or ancient threads to the front page, threads that nobody has any interest in. Most posters would silently contribute, and post with a sage, while you would intentionally try to anger them by bumping those threads.

>> No.3741026

>>3741013
Sounds like the same whining people do about "thread necromancy". In all those cases I have always found people who took offense to that kind of stuff simply spend way too much time on such a board.

>> No.3741032

>>3741014
So you think of all imageboards like /b/?
On /b/ threads move and die so fast, that by not aging, the thread may not end up being seen by other people, but on more normal imageboards, people actually browse more than just the front page, and look at older threads. Threads may survive for many hours to days. Do you get the picture now?

>> No.3741043

>>3741040
Because:
-You already posted in said thread in the past 30 minutes
-The thread is still in the first 4 pages and thus isn't going to die anytime soon
-You have a more strict idea of what "an actual contributing post" is and don't think posting a one liner is contributing to the thread.

>>3741066
One-liners hardly ever contribute to the discussion, so why post them at all?

The only time I think polite sage is well-used is when you are thanking someone. For example, you ask for source, you get it, and you make a post which says nothing more than "Thanks for the source". In that case, it's pointless to bump an entire thread just for that, but you still want to thank the person who helped you.

I've never seen another good use for sage otherwise except for when you're shitposting (i.e. posting an insulting one-liner which might as well not have been posted in the first place).
