How experienced are you with an airbrush? That's really going to be the determining factor. In my mucking about with an airbrush in general, it's really easy to overshoot the color you want because the build up is so gradual, in my experience. Anyone can do anything with the tools they have! If you're inexperienced, it's best to just grab whatever camera you have and experiment to figure out what you like to do, what you want to accomplish, and what, if anything, is stopping you from getting there. I minimally post-process mine, personally -- not for any moral reasons, but because I hate editing. I try to get it all 'in camera' -- others do a lot of PP, and that's alright, too. Some of my favorite doll photographers have clearly edited their photos, but it works for them, and that's the important thing. You should have fun with it, anon -- everything else will come after.

Dollfie Dreams pose better and don't look weird at certain angles, pic related. If you want tan or brown vinyl, Smart Dolls are by far easier to get ahold of. What one do you prefer? I personally like Dollfie Dreams more for a few reasons, but I have both and they each have their strengths.

NTA, but are they? I've heard a lot about staining and took a bunch of precautions to prevent it and haven't had any problems so far with my resin girl. Is vinyl mush worse about it, or do people not blast their dolls with MSC?

I'm really nervous about staining my new dollfie. Been trying to research way to prevent this. I see some places suggest washing all brightly or darkly colored clothing in 50/50 water/vinegar, and others say you need to use the body stocking (that volks never seems to have in stock).

I guess, in general, I'll just keep it in plain white clothes when I'm not dressing up for photos, but I'm still worried about ruining it.

Body stocking is okay, but not neccessary. Its very unsightly and looks horrid in photos. You can get away with the spray they sell on volks. The Mr. Super Clear matt spray. Several coats is suggested. I've done both the body stocking and the spray for maximum protection. I even went on aliexpress to get the leotard version, the sleeveless version and the sleeve no legs version.

Stains are pretty avoidable, and the body stocking is only good if you're dressing them in something neck to wrist to ankle. Cool Cat has different shaped and size stocking to cover just the parts you want, but you really only need one if the garment isn't lined. Most garments these days listed for DDs or Smart Dolls are lined as the problem is well known.
Your main culprits in staining are going to be cotton fabric with dark colors, and colored thread. Especially the colored thread. If you find a seam with colored thread, you can put a piece of tape over the thread to protect your doll. Washing before use can be helpful too, but make sure the garment you're washing can get wet before you do. Wash it by hand in hot water to loosen up the remaining dye. A color catcher cloth helps make sure the dye doesn't get other parts of your garment. After the hot wash and rinse, you can do a vinegar set, 50% white vinegar 50% cold water. After that wash normally again to get rid of the smell. If you're still having the water change color repeat. Lay flat or hang to dry. If you want to use a washing machine, get a delicates mesh bag and wash on the delicates cycle.
Last but not least, if the worst comes to pass and you stain your girl because of something you overlooked, don't panic. There are stain removal options that can work or at least dim it to the point you don't see it anymore, and Dollfie Dreams are modular, each piece of them can be replaced, and is sold separately. If it's a Smartdoll, you can contact support and they'll usually send out a replacement piece for free as long as you buy a piece of clothing at the same time. As long as you're not on the naughty list anyway.
Enjoy your doll, don't be afraid of styling however you want, just take precautions and it'll be OK.

I've got a coolcat stocking and carrying case in the mail on their way to me already

The main outfit I'm worried about isn't a normal outfit, but a character outfit released at an event. It's mostly navy blue with black stockings. It does look like they were smart enough to line the shirt and use white thread, but the skirt just has a dark blue liner. At least it's not cotton, though. I'm a bit worried if I do try to wash the extra color out that it'll get on the white lace trim. I might just be extra careful and leave it on her as little as possible.

>> No.37350060

>>37349794
Oh, if it's just the skirt a petticoat, slip or a pair of lace boy shorts or stain prevention shorts will cover you. Your main concern will be anywhere the fabric is tight against the doll. For a most skirts that'll be around the hips and upper thighs. If the black stockings are nylon you'll be fine but watch the thread on those too.

I got started in the hobby with Azone Pure Neemo dolls, which are a little smaller than a Barbie. You can't change their eyes and hair the way you can with the bigger dolls usually posted in this thread, but they have their own charm. You can also look at Parabox (aka Obitsu), who have dolls in various sizes that you can customize for a good price. If you want something easy and inexpensive to start with, I highly recommend the new Obitsu 24cm dolls. They’re very similar aesthetically to the Azone dolls but have set in eyes and are a bit less expensive to get ‘blank’. There’s also some patterns specifically for them in the Dollybird issue 31 (they are the dolls on the front cover and there is a good rundown of how they work as well) and I believe they fit many patterns for similar sized dolls like Azone, Blythe, and Skipper. They’re a good balance between being small enough to easily hand sew items for while not being so small that it feels impossible to make tiny enough seams and hems.

It's okay, we all start somewhere, anon! 1/4 is a good size to start with for many, I feel -- they're not as overwhelmingly large as 1/3, but easier to sew for than 1/6 if that's your interest (as making tiny clothes is actually pretty tricky.) I started out with 1/6 dolls (pure neemo) but I rarely make clothes for them as it's just too difficult to try to make clothes that small. Historical precedent I suppose, it's been that way since I became the /jp/ threadminder several years ago. The resin thread was actually dead for more than a year, but recently it's been resurrected. In either case, resin collectors are welcome to post here as far as I'm concerned -- we're two sides of the same coin, and there are plenty of resin companies doing anime-style dolls these days. (2D Doll, Aimerai, TinyFox, etc.)

>> No.37398208

Other anon says it well but there also used to be more of a division in collector demographics and type of discussion. The vinyl and anime styled dolls used to primarily attract male collectors, and the resins primarily female collectors, though that’s been balancing out in recent years. The general here is also (in my experience) more chill and focused mainly on pretty pictures, auction watching, and a lil bit of lewd, but the toy one can quickly derail when the discussion turns to community drama. I don’t think that’s necessarily because of the higher female population by the way, I believe it’s because there’s way too huge a variety of resin dolls and it’s really many demographics in one.

Really like the short hair look. As cute as the twintails are, the way they attach just sends me half the time. And for all the shoes in the girls' collection, not a single pair of black dressy ones. I feel like this is a fashion faux pas that needs to be fixed.

For the twitter JPN accounts a few have followed me back on my main account, though they’re a little shy with interactions. I don’t think a huge customizer like Ronronshuka would follow as much if you don’t have one of their customs, but a few are a little more relaxed on who they follow. I don’t even have my MDD Mochi yet, which is the most odd thing to me.

Just put yourself out there, interact often, use simple and direct English until you know enough Japanese to interact. If you have twitter on mobile, they often are in spaces as well, so it’ll really help to brush up on the language! Good luck anon!

Doll Dreaming and Den of Angels are the big forums, and a lot of the hobby community moved to instagram once flickr was no longer a viable community. On the smaller scale are places like this thread, several discord servers, facebook groups and the like -- the hobby can be found in surprising places, honestly. It apparently had a big tumblr presence at one point as well, before tumblr died off.

As for the twitter community, I don't use it much, but I've been followed back pretty regularly, and people seem nice enough. A lot of faceup artists post announcements of their releases as well, which is good if you aren't comfortable enough with Japanese to follow their personal websites/booth/etc

>Are the japs on twitter friendly or they're in their own bubble?

My experience has been lukewarm to cold, I got a lot of followbacks but very little interaction. Even a few blocks since my profile has Anglo Gweilo written all over it. Safe to say, unless you're interacting with someone who's excited to practice English, assume the responses will be cold without any functional, colloquial Japanese.

I think the price is alright for what you're getting. The hands are easily replaceable and the crack in the neck area isn't too hard to fix, especially since it's still pretty small. The smell is a little concerning but a "strong life odor" isn't necessarily a bad smell, she might just absolutely reek of cup noodles or something, it's still nothing unfixable. The boots aren't looking too good, but with a bit of elbow grease and some paint you could probably restore them. All this might be a bit of work if she's going to be what sounds like your first DD though.

I think this one would be a better first doll, even if she's 5k more expensive:

Is that what it means? I figured that anything made by someone would be considered recast. Making your own eyes? Recast.
Make your own face? Recast.
Stuff like that. If its as simple as bootleg, then every clothing item is bootleg that's not made by the main company.

>> No.37447567

>>37446639
Mass produced dolls like Barbies and Rainbow High aren't a big deal to bootleg because there's a gorillion of them out there and they're mass produced in some chinese factory that doesn't pay its workers shit to begin with. But basically all BJDs are made in small batches by one or a small handful of people, so every one that gets counterfeited directly impacts their ability to make a living.

Recasts are so-called because they're literally made by taking a doll, pressing it into a mold, and making copies off of it -- they usually lose fine details, and are a little smaller due to a property called 'shrinkage' (basically, the material gets a little smaller once it cures, like when you cook meat.) But calling them counterfeits works well enough, as it's what they are.

Non-company clothes and stuff are a different thing, there are a ton of creative people making their own designs and shit that are perfectly legitimate creators.

>> No.37447828

>>37447487
>If its as simple as bootleg, then every clothing item is bootleg that's not made by the main company.
That's not really a good analogy. Most clothes have a similar structure, and you can drag out an existing pattern and adjust it just a bit to match something someone else made(if any adjustment is needed at all). Every BJD may have a similar skeleton, but the big deal is in the sculpting, which is unique. If we're to go with the clothes analogy, it would be like someone ripping off a unique print on a shirt that belong to a small company, rather than making a similar garment.

Would a custom doll made from a 3D printer also be considered recast? Even though it was made in something like Maya or Blender? Some people I've talked to say this is considered recasting as well.

>Would a custom doll made from a 3D printer also be considered recast?
Here's an easy question to tell you if it's a recast;
Are you making a copy of an existing piece?
>Even though it was made in something like Maya or Blender? Some people I've talked to say this is considered recasting as well.
If it's something you made, it's fine. if it's a copy - well, see above.

If you sculpted yourself a doll, why would it be a bootleg? Recasts are made by physically shoving an existing doll into clay/wax to make a mold off of it. If you're making a doll yourself, that's just... an original work. Recasts bootleg the whole doll and sell them at a price that undercuts the actual sculptor(s), which hurts the hobby because it defrauds the people actually making the dolls in the first place.

>> No.37448583

>>37447852
Recast literally means you're making a mold of an existing part.

The process of using a mold and pouring liquid material into it to produce new parts is called casting. So if you're making a mold out of an existing part as opposed to making a mold from scratch then you're recasting the part. If you're making the mold from scratch yourself then you're by definition not recasting.

The only time 3D printing is recasting is if you took an existing doll and scanned it. There is a company doing this (Shuga I think?) and they’re using the scanner to resize parts and make them into Frankendolls to be harder to trace.

I don’t know where you’re getting your info from bud, but it honestly kind of sounds like someone’s been intentionally trying to make recasts sound more ‘normal’ and make pro-artist people sound crazy. A recast is a counterfeit doll, with the mold or file being made by directly copying an existing doll. The only creativity on the part of the recaster is in how they try to hide that. It isn’t parts only, it isn’t “inspired by” or “style copying”, it isn’t individuals modifying or making their own parts. It’s direct counterfeiting.

ok I’m dumb it’s sideways but anyway

So she’s vinyl, but not hollow like DD or SmD. It’s more like a giant Pure Neemo. Heavy and solid like a resin doll, and vinyl feels kinda… silky? Like just barely textured. Clothes are nice, not quite Volks quality but lots of layers and bits. Wig is super thick and has detachable twin tails on top of long hair.

Most interesting thing is the head, it’s held on by a wing nut and an odd little cone, and I’d say it would be very easy to put any similar sized vinyl or possibly even resin head on here with no modding. Her head is smaller than my DDs but I’d bet Dollce and Parabox would have something that would work. All in all a great alternative to MDD for half the price.

Harmonia Bloom is a doll line by GSC. They have a bunch of original characters, as well as a few anime character dolls scheduled to come out next year called "Harmonia Humming" (there's Chino, Cocoa, Holo, and Nezuko so far). They're a little bit shorter than Azone's Pure Neemo dolls (23cm vs 24-26cm), but like twice the price. Personally, I think their proportions look weird, like halfway between SD and normal. It just doesn't really work for me. I do think the Holo one is kinda cute though.
I think that anon actually posted in the thread you linked in >>37496662 first (assuming you're the same person) and someone there pointed them to the BJD thread here. What exactly is the difference between a fashion doll and the BJDs that we discuss here anyway? As far as I can tell, the Harmonia Bloom appears to fit in here since they have the anime aesthetic and ball joints. They're just not made of vinyl, but I don't think that's a requirement. Not being argumentative, I'm just curious. Looking at that thread you linked, the primary difference I can see is the lack of anime aesthetic and that they're ugly as hell.

I was really tempted to splurge for this Holo, didn't really have the money for her at the time so I didn't. Depending on what characters they put out I wouldn't mind getting one.

Seems like a different take on Blythe.

I only pointed them towards the fashion doll thread because I thought they might know more about them, but I'm fine with them being discussed here personally.
