there is no way to know for certain if this guy is proficient or not in any of these languages. we are going by his word

If you are reading with a dictionary (I assume you are re; VN's) then you can do what I do.

Text hook to the dictionary. Turn off all furigana on the dictionary popup (ie only shows upon clicking/hovering the word).

1) When you see a word you know, you know the meaning and can say it, you can read on.

2) You do not know the word OR you know the word but you cannot say it, you hover over the word and read the furigana. Even if you know the word, you read the furigana

If you have not noticed you will make it a bit of a chore (a very minor chore) where you will always read aloud the word unless you know the reading and the meaning. Then you will force yourself to read out the word as practice regardless if you know the meaning or not. Eventually you will just know the word because you read it enough AND its a bit of a chore to highlight it, so you motor on. Takes a bit of extra time but I passively learn readings this way.

This is also why I am not super hung up on my Anki readings anymore. Yes, if I totally fuck up the reading I will repeat, but if I am close (or if the word is one of those weird cases and its gonna be a leach) I just press okay. I know the meaning, I struggle on the reading. With more "reading" you will eventually get the reading... if you get my drift.

南方角 means generally "to the south" or "in the south direction" but when I'm trying to learn the words, 南方 should be read as "ナンポウ" despite the only listed -on readings for 方 being ”ホウ” so it confuses the hell out of me to figure out when the pronunciation gets changed considering:

and 北方 is ホッポウ
but 西方 is セイホウ
and [redacted] is [redacted]
