i know china, but why do people also call her "chuugoku" and "kurenai misuzu" ??!

>> No.3706989

>>3706956
Wiki, dude.
>However, she is more widely known as "China" (中国, pronounced Chuugoku), the one whose real name is never remembered. At first, it was just a minor fan-only thing, but after a while, even ZUN himself said that he doesn't deny calling her "China", so it's considered half-official at the moment.
>It is known that in 2ch, there was a debate on how to read Meiling's name. One side said Hong Meiling, and the other said Kurenai Misuzu. The debate ended (sort of) when a user said "Why don't we just call her 'China', as her clothing seems to identify her the most." As a result, even after ZUN said "Hong Meiling" is the correct pronunciation in an interview, people kept on calling Meiling "China".
So, it's ZUN's fault. It's ZUN's fault that she is called China. His lack of foresight.

Kurenai Misuzu?

This video explains everything about Meiling.

>> No.3707043

Since we are more capable of pronouncing other language's names than the Japanese, we shouldn't call her anything other than Mei Ling.

>> No.3707044

The difference between China and baka is as vast as the sea.

>> No.3707093

I'm surprised no one here managed to explain where her "Kurenai Misuzu" came from, is this /jp/ after all? I'm more surprised that the touhou wiki didn't explain this either.

Anyway.... Her three kanji 紅美鈴 has the following pronunciations in Japanese and Chinese (They just pronounce them differently even though they both have these three kanji in their respective language system):

紅 = "kurenai" in Japanese
紅 = "hong" in Chinese

美 = "bi" or "mi" in Japanese
美 = "mei" in Chinese

鈴 = "suzu" in Japanese
鈴 = "ling" in Chinese

That's why the Japanese jokingly uses the Japanese pronunciation of the three kanji, while Meiling herself insists that they should be read using the Chinese pronunciation.

Thank you for explaining.
