/jp/ do you remember when all the other boards made fun of you because of how you spent your times reading VNs and stuff like it.
Now however with all the steadily increasing anime adaptions of said VNs and the projects turning them into english, more and more people have started tor ead VNs.
It is like they are all a bunch of hypocrites
Do you remember when it was just us who read them, VNs that is, I somewhat miss those times.

Light Novel has wide genre as well, from moemoefluff like Zero no Tsukaima, deep themed stuff like Kino no Tabi, to action like Fate/Zero. The sheer amount of text with varying degree of tl difficulty makes the medium in high demand of translator resources. The lack of multimedia elements will also ensure to limit the amount of newfags taking interest in the medium or making it mainstream quickly.

2. To accept and being very helpful is to expand the community and getting both quality poster and those who ask for moar assistance, expanding the community

>/a/ confuses me really, what is accepted there and what is not?
Back when there's no /jp/, Touhou and VNs thread are getting popular that it irks the majority of Anime/Manga audience. Despite the fact that Japanese modern visual culture are centered on the triad of VN, Anime, and Manga (combined with other products like Drama CDs, Doujinshi, and Light Novel), /a/ wants to stick with just Anime/Manga, hence they complain to moot, resulting in split.

The conception of Katawa Shoujo also originates in pre-split /a/, back when everyone are still optimistic and having enough creative drive. That's why Katawa Shoujo despite of being a VN, are accepted well in /a/ due to oldfags' nostalgia.
http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/sticky/
http://privatepaste.com/f21gXR15qq

Now with the trend of cross-medium adaption, from Manga>Anime to VN>Anime, some interest to VN grows at /a/ newfags as well, creating the problem discussed in this thread. Those who have experienced the split years ago are sure to feel bitter when they (/a/) only pay attention to this medium just now.

There is a country were the sports of Soccer and Ice-Hockey thrives and is the most usual topics at the towns local sports-bar.
Inside that bar however there is a group who has a certain interest of the sport Baseball and they discuss it gladly within the bar even though the nation doesn't even has its own baseball team.
After some time however the fans of Soccer and Ice-Hockey tells the Baseball fans to take their shit elsewere.
The Baseball guys thinks that the Soccer and Ice-hockey fans are exaggerating but things wont cool down and the Soccer and and Ice-Hockey fans complain to the bar's owner Moot.
Moot seeing as how it could dammage his bussiness and him not being a fan of baseball himself decides that something should be done.
He doesn't want to loose the baseball customers though as they are still a steady income for him, so he builds a Baseball bar right across the street for them.
The Baseball fans go "Hey, what the hell? But ok, perhaps this is for the better and it is still a bar" so they move into the new Bar.
There they have plenty of interesting discussion about Baseball and their community thrives even though it is small.
They start to raise funds and they start to organize themself in order to make Baseball more popular and more accessable, so they help in tidying up and fixing real Baseball fields, so that the sport in fact can be played, unlike before.
Times goes by and the popularity of Baseball grows as more people start to play it as there are now local fields were one actually can play.

With this the popularity grows even more and more people starts to become regulars of the Baseball club and it is all good, but all of a sudden, unlike before there are also a bunch of jerks who have started visiting reguarly, to the old regulars dismay.
All things goes well for Baseball and the official teams happens to go to the final. With all of this being good the regulars feel happy, but the number of jerks that have filled up the baseball bar is uncomparable to before, and they all feel a bit sad about it, but as the price of Baseball gaining popularity it is just something they has to bear, that is all.
When the tournament is over though they all scream loudly from hapiness when their team actually wins the final, but at the same time they hear strong voices from across the streat.

I still think a VN boom won't be as big as others before it for at least this one reason, ero. The subs boom and the scanlation boom were all big game changers. They have porn versions but those aren't the main selling points.

When we talk VN, we are talking 18+ stuff here almost all of the time. It just can't get that big with this current community when an essential part of it is porn.

>>3658790

Unfortunately, a light novel boom is unlikely for a few reasons.

1. Western literature is already an over saturated market that does not have space for a bridge between the 13-17 and 17-24 demographics as Japan did a decade ago

2. The English market expects manga. The first wave of light novels that were translated ex. Boogiepop, SnS, Scraped Princess, Ballad of a Shinigami, etc... were lost among shelves of manga because no one really new what they were. Most of the series have been discontinued because each book has to be licensed separately and almost none of the lines came close to breaking even on profits.

3. Businesses have seen the liabilities the light novels can become as there is much more of a risk in licensing a light novel over one of the plentiful manga series. They buy in cost to a manga is much lower than that of a novel due to translation costs and light novels also run the risk of being brushed aside when compared to English literature due to lacking translations. Manga is a no risk business right now as nearly any series is likely to turn a profit and importers see this. As proof, even recently licensed light novels such as the KnK and Jinken series have been put on hold with little or no news to confirm they will ever be published.

The Faust compilations were a good attempt to break in the English audience, but I'm under the impression that they also did not quite meet sales expectations.

>> No.3659230

Any official qoutes of KnK actually being on hold?
I still thought that it was supposed to be out this december (or be delayed, as it isn't that uncommon for things to be that).
Have both FMP volumes and SnH volumes... feels somewhat unworth it if I can't buy all of them. I sure hope that Haruhi fares better

I do hope that things goes well for Yen Press though, they seem to at least be trying to actually succeed with light novels.
Even though it hurts a bit, they even went as far as making the cover for S&W "Westernized" in order to really make it succesful and established within the western market, which is something I support.

I remember being linked to /a/ from a /jp/ LN thread, and I was a bit schocked to be honest when the majority of the /a/ posters seemed to believe that manga and light novels sell a lot better than ordinary books and that ordinary books couldn't compare.
I wonder were they get stuff like that from, I mean here in /jp/ we enyoy stuff as well, we don't really deny it being "niche" though as it is somewhat of a niche market.

Lights novels still have a long way to go to 'mainstream'. VNs are not as 'mainstream' as you think. Only a handful (of retards) decide to read the VN after watching its anime adaptation. /a/ is only aware of Ever17, KS, Saya et al and that's the reason why it hasn't gone 'mainstream' yet. Post something like Love Plus or your favorite VN on /a/ and they'd ask you what the shit did you post.

I don't find anything bad about more people reading VNs. It would be nice if /jp/ isn't just about Umineko, Rance, Touhou, idols, Aya Hirano and Morning Musume. More people reading VNs means more people talking about VNs and more variety in the board's content.

Anyone who thinks /jp/ should be 'a secret club' is an idiot.

I think people on /jp/ who would' mind /jp/ to be larger, I do however think that they don't want it to be a shithole.
Hopefully things will go smoothly though, so far it isn't that bad.
Or perhaps it is

I wouldn't mind /jp/ having a larger VN crowd. But I don't really like the idea of an influx of new users. I mostly don't want to board to become to fast. I like the speed it's at right now.

>Western literature is already an over saturated market
Bro books have been on a pretty shitty decline in the Western market for a while. Nowadays every schmuck has a book out. The overall quality of Western literature from the early 00's onward is utter shit. Only books that are worth reading are reprints of reprints of reprints of reprints.

Are you somehow implying Japanese literature is better than what is currently seen as the best English literature? Oh wow.

Of course it isn't.
That is what it is currently happening here now.
We have people asking for download link and people that dont know about daemon tools, applocale or japanese unicode setting.
Not to mention all the spamming like it is the best thing since slice bread.

By the way, where do you guys usually get your LN?
Most of the time it is on backorder when I try amazon.

Being large doesn't mean 'being a shithole'. I think we're doing a great job on getting rid of potential threats.
