Why does everyone say she's bad?

She's good. You know if it weren't for her, the whole world would be overrun with evil spirits who want to control and/or destroy humanity.

I bet if Reimu jumped in front of a bullet to save the Dalai Lama's life, /jp/ would come up with some reason that's "evil."

Reimu is a complete bitch, we are reminded of this in pretty much all the games and short stories. She has little respect for youkai and will happily take their things if they look nice. If something is a problem she'll beat the crap out of it just so she doesn't have to think too hard about resolving it.

Someone else in her position may have spent hours upon hours negotiating between all the different factions, investigating each incident and getting to the bottom of it with careful reasoning and respect for everyone living in Gensokyo.

Reimu just straight up finds the first likely suspect and starts knocking heads until she gets a answer. Sure, she uses her intuition to work some things out and go in the generally right direction, but for the most part it's just a matter of beating her way up the food chain until things start to make sense.

This is what makes Reimu awesome.

I consider Reimu to be not entirely unlike a female, younger Robert Baratheon. If you've read A Song of Ice and Fire, you'll understand how fucking awesome this is.

I fully support her crusade against the unclean monsters, by the way.

But the fact is she wouldn't. Her overall actions in every game (except EoSD) indicate she's a villain.

Most of the protagonists do pretty villainous things.

If this cat was the stage 1 boss of a new Touhou game you could bet your ass Reimu, Sakuya, Marisa, and whoever else is there would find some reason to kill her, even if she was just dancin' around minding her own damn business bein' a cat.

Suika hangs out around the temple a lot, canonically. Needless to say, the booze is always flowing. Plus, the Hakurei shrine is home to feast-days and festivals. I conclude that Reimu is not only a hard drinker, but a hard partier. Good vibes abound at the Hakurei shrine.

Large quantities of doujins suggest otherwise, along with all of the tiny little in-jokes in the game.

However, that's merely my view on the subject.

Reimu is neither good nor bad. She acts in the best interest of preserving Gensokyo and the coexistence of humans and youkai. If she needs to beat the shit out of someone's god or put down a couple of youkai then so be it.

So basically she's like Rance. She solves all problems by waving her stick and balls around, and (fanonically at least) has a harem of women hanging around. And she must feel that all the women in Gensokyo belong to her at some level 'cause they all keep coming to her to fix their problems.

ZUN has just left the juiciest parts of the story to his players' imaginations...
