Goddammit, you reminded me how much I hate that doujin, especially since the artist is so good. But, ugh, grimdark.

Every attempt at grimdark in Touhou is heavy-handed by definition.

She's ill, and everyone in Gensokyo are making cranes for her to feel better.

By heavy-handed, he of course means badly written.

>> No.3617164

>>3617151

I've already seen felis ovum's stuff and it's great. Chardo's stuff is like an angry teenager's attempt at emulating Poe.

>> No.3617176

What's grimdark? Is it when doujin artists try to make Touhou seem serious instead of LOL SO RANDUM XD?

>> No.3617182

>>3617176
Gritty, hardcore stuff in which people actually die, stay dead, are killed in horrible ways, and the nasty little things that make up reality in our world apply there as well. Here there be monsters.

>> No.3617183

>>3617151
Felis Ovum isn't grimdark, it's just messed up, in a gothy kinda way. My head did indeed explode upon first gazing his work, though, yes.

THIS, though, there is very little redeemable about this.

Okay, that's a bit too serious.

I like Grimdark because it's more like the old-school fairy tales that peasants would tell their children to keep them in line.

Go to sleep, or Yukari will come and eat you.

>> No.3617201

I like grimdark because it's something different than the usual moemoe slice of life crap that comes flying out of every comiket like virgins out of the end of a Star Wars convention.

>> No.3617216

I like well made grimdark stories. Also well handled slice of life where nothing happens.
That's the thing about Gensokyo, it allows for a lot of kinds of stories. A snowflake that shifts depending on the writer.

I, however, don't like hamfisted attempts to be shocking and "real". It's like bad comics authors that add rape to any female character in order to make it "poignant" when it reality it just makes it ridiculous.

Well, every fan-fiction that doesn't follow the spirit of the original fails the "fan" part, and is therefore badly written by definition.

But of course that particular doujin would be badly written regardless of the setting.

>>3617176
Grimdark is little kid's pop-culture version of cynicism, basically. Some people mistake it for "harsh and depressing", but just that wouldn't require a new term to be described. It isn't grimdark until blood splats everywhere and everyone is an violent sociopath.

>> No.3617246

>>3617243

Gratuitious violence isn't only grimdark.

It's also child abuse, domestic quarrels, poverty, starvation, anger, hatred, paranoia...all the dark portions of the human psyche.

I liked Chado's take on Reimu to be honest, granted there are always some who take it way too seriously as some kind of argument for Reimu's omnipotence, but the story itself is more about how shitty that can be. That and you really can't take any Tohnifun doujin seriously.

My personal favourite author is Ennui Akadako though, keeps with the tone of the setting with good jokes.
