I've admired dolls and been interested in this hobby for quite some time but I don't know if I'll ever bite and get one(too expensive for me). I really like resin type dolls(vinyl ones are nice too but I've heard they're easy to stain and imo. the anime style doesn't look great viewed irl), more exactly Super Dollfies, so can any anon who has more knowledge give me some tips to get started(yes, I've read the guide). I'd be happy even with a standard model or Chinese copy of a SD if the price/quality is reasonable.

>> No.35951356

>>35949976
If you already know what size you like then things are pretty simple.
If want an SD girl or Midi you can pick out whatever standard model you like alongside a nice outfit and be set. I would also get a stand and maybe a new wig if you don't like the one they give you.
Right now you can also go for a Full Choice custom if you like Midi or 16 but the options can be overwhelming. You would also still need to pick out and separately order a wig and outfit.
Really though I would just browse Volks' sites until you're familiar with exactly what you want, maybe collect links of anything that catches you're eye in a spreadsheet.

>> No.35951681

If it doesn't have to be Volks, there's a ton of legitimate resin options -- check ACBJD and get a feel for what you like. Good questions to ask yourself are, what size doll do you want? What do you like about one doll but dislike about another? Check the #bjdsale(s) tags on instagram as well, you may find some affordable options if you don't mind a secondhand doll. Be mindful of bootlegs, as always -- for resin collectors they're everywhere.

You could always go with a smaller doll. There's a lot of 1/6th scale dolls that are significantly cheaper than SDs(pic related was $130 - for the doll. Clothes, wig, shoes, ect. brought the total to $340).

Den of Angels has a list of dolls that are under $300, but be aware that as mentioned above, you'll be paying a decent amount for clothes/wigs/ect as well.

Siodoll2 on Etsy makes really cute small dolls, and there are anime-style resins like Aimerai and 2D Doll that might appeal to you more. We actually have dollmakers lurk here from time to time as well.)

ok so I've never bought a doll before but I've been interested in them for a while. I really like picrel, which is Rapunzel from some Super Dollfie Disney collaboration. The problem is I don't feel like paying 1,500 for the whole body and outfit, I just want the head specifically, which I can't find anywhere online. Would it be acceptable for me to find a random head and face-up artist and ask them to copy Rapunzel's face-up onto it? Would it even turn out the same way? Hello, does anyone know where i can find a good model head for Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto? Need it for a 1/6 scale doll, bonus if you can find her clothes i can buy as well?

all i can find on Aliexpress is one and it seems quite alot/ not that close to her model facially speaking.

ALso, is it possible to buy a shota/skinny boy body anywhere so i can have like, a 9s or soething like thatbut with the smooth bodies like a Jion Doll (have two of those now but both are girl models.)

The sculpt is custom for the doll and the face-up and sculpt are equal parts of the look of a doll. So it'll look quite a bit different on a different head sculpt. Getting an artist to copy a face-up is going to be hard. Most well known face-up artists will refuse and usually list that as a contingency of taking a commission. But if you ask for something similar or inspired by the style of this face-up on a new different head you should be OK. My approach to my first doll was to go full custom using a stock head and having an artist draw things up based on the character I wanted. She's still my favorite several dolls later. Take your time and do lots of research before you make a choice.

Dolls come in a variety of styles, sizes, and materials. The ones in this thread are primarily Dollfie Dreams and Mini Dollfie Dreams, which are made from vinyl by the company Volks. Other doll companies include Obitsu (Parabox in the US,), Smart Doll, Azone, and Visuadoll which you may enjoy -- my recommendation is to look around and see what you like and dislike about the dolls you find, and then choose a doll from there. Each company has default models that come with a body, head, and sometimes accessories -- so if you see one you like, you can jump right in! Their storefronts also frequently sell accessories like wigs, eyes, and clothes, too. It's a great place to start!

One important thing to note is that each doll corresponds to a certain set of measurements, called the 'scale'. The most common scales in this thread are 60cm (1/3 scale,) 40cm (1/4 scale,) and 20-30cm (1/6). This is important to note when buying clothes and accessories, as something made for a 40cm Mini Dollfie Dream won't fit a 60cm Dollfie Dream body! Other than that, however, sizes are mostly a matter of personal preference, so pick what you like!

While the default models can be quite nice (Dollfie Dream Sister Karin seems particularly popular,) many people prefer to have dolls with custom-painted faces. This is something you can do yourself if you are artistically inclined, or something you can commission an artist to do paint for you if you're not. Some artists also make custom heads and list them for sale on websites like Etsy and Yahoo Japan Auctions (which is where many of them originate.) Prices on custom heads can vary wildly, and popular artists can sell their work for literal thousands of dollars -- but you can also find deals if you look around, and very few dolls sell for that much money! Whether you get something direct from a company, order something custom from an artist on etsy, or bid on a head from an auction site, what matters most is that you like it. Secondhand stores like ebay and mercari also have heads (and sometimes whole dolls) available for sale, so it can be worthwhile to look around. (Be careful of Dollfie Dream Miku Hatsune, however, as there are bootleg versions floating around and they look very silly in person.)

Accessories like wigs, outfits, eyes, and props can be found all over the internet. I personally get many of my doll things from Etsy and a webstore called Mandarake, which is a Japanese retail chain specializing in hobby goods of all sorts, including dolls.

What specifically interests you in dolls, anon? I can help you narrow it down, if you want.

TL;DR dollfie.volks.co.jp

(Note: this applies mostly to vinyl dolls. Resin dolls are also lovely, but the resin side of the hobby has a big counterfeit problem, so buying things secondhand can be dodgy. Alice's Collections (ACBJD) is reputable and reliable -- check out Aimerai and 2-D Doll for resin anime options!)

i feel like a fool, trading my time for money to then use to purchase these things. but if i didn't engage in this behavior, i'd be even more unoccupied and lonely with less to distract me from the day to day slog. not to say this can't be a positive hobby with the numerous productive and creative applications, i just don't have the energy or maybe even desire to do any of them. it just serves the purpose of shamefully filling some void and providing a superficial sense of accomplishment. this general concept probably characterizes my other hobbies too.

Look anon, we need things to distract us and occupy our time to reflect upon or move away from ordinary life. You're not just "trading money" you're working for the freedom to pursue a hobby or own well made things. I might be biased but dolls are a great hobby if done in moderation and a better one if you can get into building/making since as you specified it has numerous creative applications(sewing, sculpting, painting, drawing) but if you feel burned out or tired just take a break from it and pursue something else.

Listen here anon, it's okay to vent sometimes, because I think everyone has those 'what am I doing?' moments in this hobby, and in life. Throughout our lives we're taught to measure our worth as human beings by the merit of our capitalist contributions to society- how much we're working, what our work is, how much that work is worth on a financial level, and how much we're willing to sacrifice to do ever more work as we chase the ever-moving target of 'success'.

And then, against that backdrop, is this little hobby- a money sink with no real practical value for most people. While some are able to make a living sculpting and selling dolls, and others get supplemental income through crafting props and clothes for them, most of us just buy and enjoy our dolls because they make us happy- something that shouldn't need justification, but often does, because were told that any time not spent on work or 'improvement' of ourselves is time wasted. Even worse, these are expensive 'luxury' goods, not tools or clothes or even food, nothing that can really do much of anything. It feels wasteful to buy something that doesn't 'do' anything.

But dolls- or figurines, or posters, or anything else with no immediate function- do have a purpose. I think many people tend to devalue our own personal happiness to the degree that it might as well be worthless, when really, it's just as important as what we eat and how much we sleep. A little figure sitting on a shelf that makes you smile whenever you see it is a worthwhile investment because it's one of the little things that make life worth living. The things that make each day a little brighter are worth their weight in gold, especially lately with everything going on and how much time people have had to spend cooped up inside.

Whether it's collecting fancy dolls, tending to a bunch of houseplants, re-watching your favorite series, or whatever else makes you smile- that shit's worthwhile. It's part of self-care to do things just for you.

(And if you can't enjoy anything you're doing- even things you used to enjoy- or if you get a momentary blip of happiness that fades right on out again and you spend much of your day feeling bad, frustrated, or nothing at all-

that's Clinical Depression, and you should talk to someone professional about it. It doesn't have to be- nor should it be- like this.)

Be kind to yourself, anon. Faceless-chan is always a real joy to see around the thread. There's nothing wrong with just enjoying her as she is and having her around solely and exclusively for the sake of it. Times are tough and it's okay to not be okay. You aren't alone in this.

you can buy a mini sized myoudoll with faceup for $260 right now. a shinku outfit, eyes, and wig arent worth $940 imo. i'd maybe consider buying the rest of the set without the doll and put it on a nicer doll

the issue with the volks shinku is shes from 2005 and it shows. volks just wasnt good at faceups yet. a modern faceup on her helps a lot but most collectors with a custom shinku aren't leaving her as a character doll. there's also recent one-off shinkus but then the owner probably doesnt have the outfit

also if you pay attention to sizes in the show, all of the rozen maiden girls appear to be SD sized. there are times where it's inconsistent but most of the time they all look around 1/3rd scale

Indeed. You can also will them to a trusted third party, if you happen to have one (or find one later on, at which point you can amend the will.) Including bills of sale or other reference for their value at time of purchase will also help authenticate their value in that unfortunate event.

They were in a wooden cabinet, I think several factors caused it. The room was completely dark with no air circulation. There's various options. When not doing anything with mine I have them sitting on shelves around the room. I remember one japanese guy keeping his in storage bins (because when an earthquake hit, he posted a photo of his doll room in disarray.) Some people store them in their boxes, to my knowledge, and others have a doll cabinet of glass, wood, or acrylic- but as an earlier anon noted, depending on your local climate and weather, this can present problems. Whatever you do, I'd try to make sure ventilation- or desiccation (silical gel packs, for example-) are factored into your plans.

resin dolls stay in their boxes unless I take them out to play. vinyl/abs dolls stay on display in a detolf. my DD does have a stand and i wouldnt trust her to stand without it
the most compact way to store them is to disassemble or unstring them.
pose doesnt matter as far as im aware. could stretch out the elastic more but you'll have to replace that every x years anyway

I live in a dry climate so i dont and haven't ever worried about mold. my kikipop stood without a stand through a small earthquake once but thats an uncommon occurrence where i live

In my experience vinyl dolls are pretty hard to damage from falls or other issues. Stains and yellowing are always a concern, and the faceup can get scratched- or the frame can crack or get loose over time, as happens with a lot of older dolls (and Obitsu in particular.) But as far as the actual vinyl goes, as long as it isn't cut or otherwise perforated, it'll keep on truckin'.

Thin resin parts (fingers especially) are prone to breaking off, and particularly hard falls might cause a chip, but resin seems pretty hardy in most general use situations, too. I wouldn't advise throwing a doll into a wall or dropping it from a several-story apartment balcony, but things falling from a shelf usually come away unscathed.

Japan has a culture of exclusivity where value = rarity, so if they have the rare desirable thing (boy dolls, tan dolls, certain wig/eye colors and styles, etc) then by only selling them in one place, it keeps them valuable to their fans... is I think the mindset. It probably worked fine before e-commerce took over and the global marketplace got so big, but now Volks is just leaving a massive amount of money on the table because of their presumption that selling things people want to buy will, somehow, devalue those things. Like travelers wouldn't already go to Doll Point just for the experience!

Between that and how slowly traditional Japanese companies adopt new technologies in general, it's taking forever for us to get anything new that might be considered a 'market risk' and hasn't been tried and true as valuable for ages already in the home (read: important) market.

There's a reason Smart Dolls sell so well, and it's not because they're exceptionally high-quality. Availability will take you far.

It is artificial leather or pleather but the lifespan shouldn't be affected that much since you won't handle it as much as you would a doll. Buy ONLY if you absolutely want the Volks brand, otherwise just get Chinese made or make your own.

Artifex/Twigling maybe? Silicone bodies are pretty malleable as well but pretty delicate to maintain. Do you have a specific size/style/material you're looking for, anon?

>> No.36231255

>>36231166
Those do seem to have good articulation but I'm looking for more of an anime style one, that preferably isn't resin since I'm not a huge fan of the "string" rigging? Not sure what it's exactly called. For size, at most Id go up to DD and lowest probably 26-30cm?

>> No.36233065

>>36231255
As far as anime goes, Volks' newest vinyl bodies seem pretty good if you're willing to take a screwdriver to them to tighten the joints, and Obitsu bodies are known for being particularly poseable because of their soft stomachs. Angel Philia are also pretty flexible from what I've seen, and some (Ellie) have an anime-style face There are also wire-skeleton soft-silicone bodies available that are probly pretty flexible, but I have no direct experience with them. Additionally, I know there are anime-style resins with Aimerai and 2-D Doll, but I am unsure how poseable they are -- but with resin it is frequently a trivial matter to get a doll head from one company and a body from another if you'd like to go that route.

No matter what you decide to go with, in all cases, Smart Dolls pose like shit. I actually like them aesthetically, but it doesn't change the fact that they pose like shit. Beyond that, there's plenty of good options out there -- good luck shopping, anon!

>> No.36236454

>>36234420
Last I heard dollhos aren't being produced anymore, though I'm unsure as to why. If I recall, there are videos on the internet for how to modify an ona/hip/mini-torso into a dollho (in short: wires) for those brave enough to modify them, but I can imagine that's not exactly appealing.

How do I properly maintain old wigs? I have a kirika wig that looks like its starting to split at the pony tail section from what looks like stress of the elastic band + hair rigidity.

Would oiling help the hair strands from snapping?

>> No.36241790

>>36240982
What are the hair strands made of? Generally, I don't think you can repair a polymer once the macromolecules started to crack. You'd need a coupling agent for it, and it's not in your ordinary oils. I think the most you can do with these things is preventive maintancence, but you are way past it, if it tries to separate.

>> No.36244297

The 60cm, 55cm, and 50cm (I believe?) dolls are discontinued, but the MDD-sized dolls are still in production, and there are also Angel Philia and Azone's Iris Collect series which are built from Obitsu's 50cm frame. It's unfortunate they aren't producing their larger bodies though, even if the shoulders look silly with how huge they are, I appreciate their poseability.
