These signs obviously exist but they are so rare that having lived in Japan for 4 years and traveling all over I have never seen a single one. I imagine such shops/restaurants never got many foreigners in the first place but one of the few foreigners they did get totally fucked up their shit.

The only area where this thing is widespread and you almost never see a sign but really will be turned away at the door even if you're Japanese is hot shit are the sex industry places. It's unfortunate for the relatively few foreigners with great Japanese but overall pretty understandable in that it would great big problems if the girl is telling you not to do something or this or that and you can't understand. Pretty damn easy to pick up a regular Japanese girl anyway if you just go to a foreigner oriented bar.

I love how that one sign seems to have given all of 4chan the impression that it's on every building in the country. I lived in Japan for two years, and I never saw a single one of those signs. Never in those two years of living in Japan did I ever get any discrimination. Then again, I lived in Tokyo, where they're probably used to the occasional foreigner.
